hmmm.... they seem to ask an awful lot of detail in the sign up process

such as? I can't exactly remember, but might be for your page..depending how personal.. 

They found similar profiles on linked in, myspace and a few others, and wanted me to input my username AND passwrd. Why my passwords?!

They really need to work on their sign up process.... it's crap

No idea. I am sure I have some invites floating around on there also.

Have any of you guys tried Wink?  I think it's much better than Spock. Spock is full of stupid Hi5, MySpace, Bebo, etc. profiles.

One major benefit of using a People search engine is that you can discover new people interested in a particular niche. Try searching for "Blogging"  in both Spock and Wink. While Wink returns pretty high quality profile links, Spock fetches all the crap from MySpace, Hi5, etc and I hope that I don't need to explain how crappy + useless these profiles are.
