Yes, BMW’s X6, caught here virtually disguised before arriving in concept form on BMW’s stand at the Frankfurt motor show, ushers in a new motoring acronym. In BMW talk it’s an SAC – that’s Sports Activity Coupe. The sleek and low four-seater – sleek and low for an off-roader, that is – is Munich’s most driver-oriented take on the off-roader yet, to the extent that the word ‘coupe’ keeps cropping up in their X6 lexicon.
Underpinned by modified X5 architecture – the two cars share around 70 percent commonality means the same wheelbase, front and rear track dimensions and double wishbones at each corner. The X6 promises to step into the gap between sports utility and sports car.
Oh great.... a new acronym 
All SUVs should be banned as a highway beautification scheme. Save the planet and save your eyes as well.

Rude awakening being back in the land of huge SUVs. Driving either my MX-5 or wife's Astina, I can't see beyond them reversing out of a parking space at the grocery store. Ban them now!

Yeah, it doesn't make sense with the X3 and X5 around.... unless they're gonna do away with the X3, which I doubt
In my humble opinion, the X5 is OK looking. It has many nice features and has a good range of power but for the money it costs and what it actually delivers in terms of driving experience I would disagree. Most SUV's (to me anyway) feel like I'm sailing a boat. The X5 is a tad better than that but costs far too much for what it is. The X3 is a piece of shit at any price.
- Looks like: A Hot Wheels car brought to life
- Defining characteristics: A sports car body dropped onto Bigfoot’s wheels
- Ridiculous features: A sports car body dropped onto Bigfoot’s wheels
- Chance of being mass-produced: BMW doesn’t often introduce a concept that isn’t meant for production. The X6 looks so ready to hit dealerships we’d expect to see the real thing revealed by the end of this year.

The car in the image to the left shows, according to BMW, "how the range of BMW X models the world over might be extended," but we'd rather just call it "overkill."
Yep, that's right: Call us crazy, but the world doesn't need another SUV or crossover. Let's go even further: Car companies that build fantastic sport sedans should stick to what they're good at, and refrain from building capable-but-pointless trucks. Ok, one more step: Trucks that do neither truck-specific things well nor car-specific things well have very little reason to exist. (OK, they give you a reason not to buy a minivan. But that's about it.)
That said, this is BMW's Concept X6. And if the four-door monstrosity above looks like a cross between a 5-series, an X5, and a 6-series, then that's perfectly logical, because that's exactly what it is. BMW's Concept X6 is claimed to be the world's first "Sport Activity Coupe" (remember, this is the same company that gave us the X5 and then insisted that it be called a "Sports Activity Vehicle," a term no one outside of Munich uses). As you'd expect, the company is pitching it as a half-coupe, half-SUV type of vehicle.
Nope. More factual than funny. No doubt some no-hoper executive types will latch on to it as a company car but people like that won't need one of these cars to be easily recognised outside of a car...

They need "SUV Free" parking areas at the grocery store. We have no alcohol, no smoking zones, so why not "No SUV" zones? Either that or set up parking for them the furthest from the store.
I expect that a message would instantly appear on the X6 heads-up display with spatial beep warnings (in the same way a fighter pilot hears warning beeps in his bone dome to warn of the direction of a threat) if any spots of dirt get on the body-work...
...and the on-board sat-nav would automatically route them to the nearest car valet centre

What do you think of the new X6?
Hard to say. I have not seen one yet. Are they to supersede the X5? Plenty of these I have seen often in their natural environment, being the 40 zone on Pashen Street between 8 and 9 in the morning and 3 and 4 in the afternoon. In this case, my assessment is that they may be superfluous to the users needs. I would love a chance to give one a trashing on some dodgy tracks and hills.
Taking up JR's idea of it being a "military vehicle". I wonder if you could mount a turret with 2 half inch Bownings or a 40mm Oerlikon cannon in the middle of the roof. It would sell well in Basra...

Let's face it. BMW will market it and it will sell. Like any vehicle there is going to be those who hate it and those who have no idea what style and value for money is all about. I suspect that the black version will sell best because it's second hand re-sale to the drug-dealing community will be ensured.

Well, it's been over a month since this thread was started by Dek and I still haven't changed my mind. The X6 still looks like a non-entity of a car.

It's an aluminum bat as well, with a nice sweet spot at the end. Good for 300 feet at least in baseball. It may dent on an SUV, though.
