'Top Gear' presenter's condition improves to stable

    Thursday Sep 21 12:50 AEST

Richard Hammond, a presenter for the BBC's Top Gear automobile television series, has improved to a stable condition after being involved in a car accident which saw him being airlifted to hospital.

The 36-year-old television presenter was filming for the programme at a disused airfield in York, central England, when the accident happened and was airlifted to a hospital in nearby Leeds.

He was involved in a high-speed car crash while filming an apparent attempt to break Britain's land speed record in what was described as a "rocket powered dragster" that travelled at speeds close to 482.8 kilometres per hour.

The current British land speed record is 300.3 miles per hour, held by Colin Fallows, who set the record in 2000.

A former firefighter at the scene said the accident had happened on the last attempt of the day, which saw the car veer to the right, triggering the deployment of one of the parachutes.

The car, however, went onto the grass, and "spun over and over" before eventually resting upside down and "dug in" to the grass, Dave Ogden of Event Fire Services said.

Hammond was cut free, placed in a neck brace and onto a stretcher before an air ambulance arrived to take him to hospital.

And I was just wondering yesterday if any of them had had any accidents and how good their insurance is

    oops

    Hammond's say on the accident

It's always funny and intriguing what the brain throws up in and after an accident.... The first thing I've thought of is '^%&$@# the person doesn't have insurance....' while the accident is happening :P

    Clarkson hits back

For once I fully agree with the guy... politicians go around blaming everything under the sun except the fact that their very own tests that ppl have to take to get a license is below par. There is more to driving than being able to park and indicate. Driving lessons don't prepare ppl for the realities of the road. Add to that the 'invincibility' factor that young ppl have (speaking from experience) and it is a definite recipe for death and destruction. I've always maintained that the age for licenses should be increased... (altho it'd would have pissed me off when I was young.) But still, it isn't just the age factor. It's a lack of skills and understanding of the machine that they're driving. One doesn't become a good driver without having an accident or two. Because it's only then the young uns realise that their actions have consequences.

    That said,

    LONG LIVE TOP GEAR!!

    Hello

    2007-03-13 17:39:00.0

That's good to know, but he means Northern-Autumn, so we'll be TG-less for another 6 months!  Series 9 was only 6 episodes, so we got short changed a bit.

    2007-03-19 18:09:58.0

There's never enough of something you love

    2007-03-19 18:25:00.0

Yeah, you can read James May weekly in the UK Telegraph, and Clarkson writes for another paper.  I just buy the magazine, but they're quite old once they get here.

I've just realised Top Gear has moved to 7.30pm tonite on SBS

    2007-03-23 19:28:49.0

    BBC considers U.S.-specific "Top Gear"

    I think this is ridiculous...

The report was not clear as to whether some of the same segments would
be used in both editions of the show, but the U.S. version is expected
to have an increased focus on American vehicles
    .

...especially because it is a rare event when they have something good to say abt American cars:P

    2007-04-09 23:05:15.0

That would suck big time.  But, you need to appreciate how narrow and inwardly-focused the US market is.  BBC has a world version of the BBC for sale on world wide pay TV networks (don't know if it's on Foxtel as I can't get it in my building), but in the US we get a service called BBC America, which is just re-runs of Benny Hill and other ancient British shows.  It sucks.

Like most of the British shows that are remade in the USA, if they do this it will also suck.  They'd have to replace the entire team, as I can't possibly see Jeremy saying anything good about American cars, unless, of course, he's well paid to do so.  Also, I don't know how the average American audience would take to a "foreign" accented presenting team anyway.  Remember the US release of Mad Max had the Aussie accents dubbed with American accents.

It's best for Top Gear to remain the same as it is, and just make it availabe for legal download.  I'd rather it stay original than corrupted by American influence.

    2007-04-10 11:22:03.0

This is really special. Love it. When not playing it very audibly in the office I am strutting about quoting ... " it doesn't go ... fast". Ha. Great vehicles.

There's an amazing stat about their longevity isn't there? Something like - a certain percentage of all Landies from such a year are still on the road (or something)

I think it was filmed in May 2007, which makes Hamster's dog sled trek even more amazing as that's about 7-8 months from his big accident.  Go Hamster!

    2008-02-03 08:34:50.0

Bah. I tried to watch it, but BBC requires Real Player, and for some reason it won't install....

    Which one is this Happy?

    2008-02-03 15:35:14.0

this be the podcast of the radio show they presented a few years ago.

Took me forever to find it. btw dont install the latest real player as it is most inferior to its predecessor. Try the one before it.

    2008-02-04 08:36:33.0

@Dek.  I think the BBC doesn't allow stuff to be viewed outside the UK anyway.  But I might be wrong.

    2008-02-04 08:47:30.0

Yeah, it won't work. And RealPlayer is crappy anyways

    2008-02-04 18:08:27.0

@deezee & Arthur. I have RealPlayer installed, and it won't let me view it either.

All I get is the shell of the player, and a female voice saying, "Sorry, we can't bring you the program you requested".

    Looks like you're right Arthur!

    2008-02-04 22:25:25.0

    2008-02-06 09:41:46.0

I must invent a devious ploy to free the podcast from the iron like grasp of the BBC.

I would also like to take the opportunity to mention I have actually seen Top Gear being filmed. It was thrilling.

    2008-02-06 13:29:56.0

lol yeh dont get me wrong i still think its the best thing on tv by far...

Just it felt a little more scripted than in the last serieses.

    2008-06-24 10:33:31.0

    hmmmm....

Might need to watch it again to determine that

    2008-06-24 20:36:31.0

It was definitely funnier though ill give them that.

    2008-06-29 06:52:15.0

Hey Happy, do you know why they only had 6 episodes this season? Was that the end of the season, or are they just on a break?

    2008-08-12 20:24:06.0

    qq

    2008-08-12 20:24:08.0

Probably because that way they can show it more than once a Year but the budget has shot up since the last series' and May and Hammond are starting to branch out alot by plugging things and such.

    2008-08-14 07:00:08.0

Back in winter methinks but im not entirely sure.

    2008-08-14 07:00:31.0

    Mee too Cry

But the cheap car challenges alone were costing £50,000 just for the cars so the beeb must be saving up alot for each series.

    2008-08-14 07:46:18.0

Oh, cost shouldn't be an issue...

    They're making enough

    2008-08-14 20:15:37.0

Biggest production company in the world or something:P.

On but there was that whole 10% cut in budgets for new programmes so top gear myt have been hit abit.

    2008-08-15 15:38:22.0

Tis okay... their ever expanding empire will keep bringing the pounds.

TG Aus starts here soon. I'm not very optimistic about it

    2008-08-15 18:39:11.0

The way I see it ... they will either copy the format completely and it will be appalling or they will try to do something entirely different and it will be appalling.

    2008-08-15 20:08:40.0

Yeah.... I had some hope until

    1. they passed me over in the auditions (:P)
    2. I saw the first ad for the show

    2008-08-15 22:33:35.0

Id like all the presenters to go into tournaments like they did in the last series.

    2008-08-18 05:05:54.0

    Tournaments? You mean the challenges?

    2008-08-18 05:32:03.0

Tournaments have more of a "British" sound to them.  It gives you a minds-eye view of conical spired tents tipped with long trianular banners, the gentry and their ladies laughing in the midday sun, Morris Dancers for sideline entertainment and Jousting in the main arena...

    2008-08-18 07:55:10.0

Tournaments... all that makes me think of is darts

    2008-08-18 19:25:30.0

Speaking of which Im predicting London 2012 to be filled with millions of Morris Dancers and druids and things...

    2008-08-22 15:34:48.0

Oh goodie, I just lurrve Morris Dancers and Druids. (It'll save me going to Stonehenge)Wink

    2008-08-22 23:51:28.0

When I first saw this post, I was thinking "Morris Minors and Drugs"..Surprised

    2008-08-22 23:53:33.0

What a combination! Like Coventry in the 60's!

    2008-08-23 02:03:29.0

Now that's an awful vision, Coventry, in any period of time.

    2008-08-23 15:10:43.0

    Especially during the early 40's..Surprised

    2008-08-24 03:48:48.0

The Luftwaffe had a go at some slum clearance but they didn't get it all (trying to stay light-hearted here, but I do concur with you there Andro...)

    2008-08-24 15:16:01.0

Any chance we can get them to visit the Gold Coast?

    2008-08-25 04:23:02.0

Not yet right? There's a while to go?

    2008-10-29 06:07:04.0

Top Gear Australia is on.. but it's just not the same

    2008-10-29 13:35:04.0

    It's terrible! Bleh!

Oh, don't even get me started....

    2008-10-29 17:02:18.0

Top Gear won an award last night, and they had to send The Stig to collect it.

    Read on

    It's too funny!

    2008-10-29 17:20:28.0

I heard somewhere top gear will start again this sunday but im not sure...

on a different note has anyone else heard about the top gear live thingy happening in perth with clarkson and hammond next year?

    2008-10-30 04:08:22.0

    Really?? Are they coming down?

I was hoping they'd bring their road show to Aust

    2008-10-30 04:20:28.0

Meanwhile, I was in a bookstore this evening, and they even have TG books for kids!!

    2008-10-30 04:20:53.0

wow! i want one! Apparently even the stig has written a book I want it!!!

    2008-10-30 04:27:15.0

Oh oh I HAVE to get tickets for that!!

    2008-10-30 04:33:43.0

*looks up Google maps for Acer Arena*

    2008-10-30 04:34:05.0

What a shame James won't be there.... He's my fav

    2008-10-30 04:34:17.0

Will someone remind me on the 16th please?

And thank you so much for bringing this to my attention Happy!!XP

    2008-10-30 04:34:39.0

    That is quite alrightXP

How is aussie top gear anyways?

    2008-10-30 05:10:07.0

Will someone remind me on the 16th please?

Umm, If i'm not mistaken, 16th Oct has already passed, Deezee.Wink

    2008-10-30 05:48:08.0

    OH NO!!!

    *slaps forehead*

I guess it says something that that fact didn't even register in my head....

    2008-10-30 06:17:29.0

Happy - TG Aust is bleh

    2008-10-30 06:17:36.0

    Bleh as in very bleh

    2008-10-30 06:17:45.0

update: apparently the show includes star in reasonably priced car where the audience control the car with boards saying left/right

and they'll also have challenges like they do on tv.

for some reason james is in london but not perth and he seemed really out of place too xD

    2008-10-30 12:42:35.0

That's in the live show, you mean?

    2008-10-30 18:09:53.0

I have not seen TG Aust yet. The best part I suppose would be the familiarity of the heaps of shit in the scrap yard they try to get going for whatever reason.

    2008-10-30 23:45:54.0

Top gear is on now xD and by the looks of it they're back in america soon!

    2008-11-02 12:02:20.0

lmfao! thats the best intro movie to the series ive ever seen!!!

    2008-11-02 12:03:12.0

    Shhhh.... I haven't watched it yet!:P

    2008-11-02 17:04:10.0

Jeremy C is in the shit for his comments about lorry drivers on Sundays show.  I didn't see it myself but the rumour is that he was describing the day of a lorry driver - it goes like this.  Blah blah blah blah blah etc... and they murder prostitutes.  Sounded funny to me but there was 1000's of complaints  LOL!

    2008-11-04 14:58:17.0

    HAHAHAHA

Sounds like a regular day in the office for him!

    2008-11-04 17:32:08.0

Here is a link to it.  I don't know if you can play the video from the BBC site but I'm sure it will e on You Tube...

    2008-11-05 02:12:35.0

    Yaaay! BBC allows clips now!

    2008-11-05 02:35:43.0

TG Australia is pretty crap...racing each other around an unimaginative track, wanking, hooning through the desert, 4-wheel driving/hooning, doughnuts, possum piss, more doughnuts, a second-rate driver purporting to be the Stig, more wanking, Ford versus Holden...Yaaaawn...

    2008-11-06 22:52:51.0

hahahaha and me as an aussie thinks thats fantastic!!

    2008-11-07 00:26:10.0

    Really?? You like the show?

    2008-11-07 00:38:00.0

No. I very much dislike the Australian version of Top Gear. I just enjoy all that stuff.

    2008-11-07 00:48:03.0

    *phew*

    You got me worried there....

    2008-11-07 00:50:10.0

I think Morgan means she enjoys hooning and wanking...

    2008-11-07 05:32:56.0

Ahhh.. so now we know, eh Morgan??;)

    2008-11-07 19:47:37.0

It may be better if you print in bold caps dek...she might be going blind...

    2008-11-08 00:18:19.0

i dont appreciate all this Undecided

    2008-11-08 08:43:57.0

I think I've said this somewhere before but here goes again.  Oh dear!

    2008-11-08 10:40:53.0

It does seem unfair discussing Morgan and her personal habits behind her back. Let's just put that picture out of our minds and move on to something else...

    2008-11-08 15:01:13.0

I was specifically referring to hooning! Just read the statement again

I didn't mean it like that Morgan.

    HELLER!!!!

    2008-11-08 16:47:49.0

How many dozens of times have you backpedalled and cried that tune, dek?

Your feigned innocence is losing its effect by its constant occurrence...

    2008-11-08 19:38:30.0

    Meh...

    Ignorance I accept, feigned I don't.

Mainly, it was poor reading skillz. Back to kindergarten for me!

    2008-11-08 20:26:24.0

    2008-11-08 22:15:31.0

Hmm... that smiley face is too happy... I need a "tolerant smile" LOL

    2008-11-14 09:18:21.0

It was good to see the new series of Top Gear (UK) back on SBS last night. Clarkson is as irreverent as ever...brilliant stuff

    2008-11-24 23:00:31.0

    Most certainly.

I'd watched it before, and still laughed my head off through the whole hourXP

    2008-11-25 05:01:45.0

I did mean to put "new series", but who cares...

It amuses me to think that The Stig is supposedly anonymous when everyone and his dog ( means you too) knows who they are...or were

    2008-11-25 05:23:26.0

    I don't....

    2008-11-25 16:36:26.0

    Who is it?

    2008-11-25 16:36:32.0

New series?? what?? when?? is it on here?

    2008-11-25 17:12:17.0

Not the latest they've produced, but still first time aired on SBS

    2008-11-25 17:31:27.0

Apparently there have been more than one Stig. Perry McCarthy did it for the first 20 or so episodes. He is ex-F1 and Le Mans...His place was allegedly taken by Tim Schrik, whoever the f..k he is.

    2008-11-25 22:58:13.0

I was always convinced that it was Damon Hill Embarassed

    2008-11-25 22:59:18.0

Ahh... but we don't know who it is right now do we?

    2008-11-25 23:10:22.0

My spies in UK say it is a WOMAN Surprised

    2008-11-25 23:36:40.0

Can you believe it...a bloody woman!!!

    2008-11-25 23:37:09.0

I shall be watching closely for she-breasts next week

    2008-11-25 23:39:05.0

A lot of people speculate that it's Sabine, but I'm sure it isn't

    2008-11-26 03:55:16.0

    Why are you sure?

    2008-11-26 15:02:54.0

Cos she's very small. The Stig isn't

    2008-11-26 16:11:04.0

And their driving styles are different

    2008-11-26 16:11:18.0

Aha...I hereby award you the 'Secret Squirrel' badge.

    2008-11-26 17:19:39.0

    Laughing

    2008-11-26 18:29:16.0

Apparently there is some kind of contract that says that if the identity of the Stig is blown they are fired immediately.

    2008-11-27 01:23:39.0

    Yeah, so they say.

I like it. Keep the mystery I sez

    2008-11-27 02:15:32.0

Top Gear 'Ferraris' not what they seem

The headline act at last week’s Top Gear Live show was a trio of Ferraris doing burnouts, but it appears the Ferraris weren’t real. By RICHARD BLACKBURN.

    2009-02-16 22:35:02.0

    hahaha yeah, I read that.

Wasn't sure if it was just gossip or real

    2009-02-16 23:52:25.0

Can anyone tell me what the car was from the latest episode of top gear screened on sbs this week? it was the car that was like the new lotus elise but better

    2009-03-06 03:39:35.0

Dek.. I'm relying on you... :P

    2009-03-06 03:39:46.0

    I can't remember...

They had the evo, wrx, 206... can't recall much else:(

    2009-03-06 03:45:05.0

    206... 206 what!!

    2009-03-06 03:47:10.0

i know they were comparing the mitsubishi to the subaru.. but that wasnt it..

    2009-03-06 03:47:31.0

oh yeah... no it wasnt the peugeot

    2009-03-06 03:47:47.0

    Was it the TVR?

    2009-03-06 03:51:21.0

wait.. what series are we in here?

    2009-03-06 03:51:24.0

It was a repeat, so I don't know

    2009-03-06 03:51:39.0

hmm.. that looks kinda elise-y maybe i think so that was it

    2009-03-06 03:52:19.0

yeah i know.. repeats suck.. i cant keep up lol!!

    2009-03-06 03:52:37.0

Well, they're up to date... the Vietnam special is the last one before their break

    2009-03-06 03:53:05.0

Got it!! It was the Vauxhall VX- something or other

    2009-03-06 03:55:43.0

    VX-220 turbo..;)

    2009-03-06 03:58:39.0

    What about it?

    2009-03-06 04:03:59.0

I think the VX-220 is some re-badge of an Aussie car.  Might be wrong but I'm sure I read it somewhere.

    2009-03-07 16:00:52.0

The Vauxhall is a rebadge of Holdens usually, but I've never seen the VX-220 here

    2009-03-07 19:00:02.0

Opel.. (which is where nearly all Holdens originate from anyway)..

    2009-03-07 20:42:41.0

Yeh, in Singapore and part of Europe, they're Opels, in England Vauxhal I think

    2009-03-07 22:05:39.0

Sorry, don't know where I got that bullshit about the VX-220 being a Holden derivation.  It is, in fact a 2nd generation Lotus Elise...

    2009-03-08 11:11:29.0

    2009-03-08 11:11:39.0

    2nd gen lotus elise?? Seriously?

    2009-03-08 21:30:30.0

WHICH IS WHAT I SAID EARLIER!!!!!!

    2009-03-08 21:36:46.0

Well, you didn't exactly say it was a 2nd gen....

    ^_^'

    2009-03-08 21:39:37.0

    ....................

    2009-03-08 21:46:13.0

Ok, the Vauxhall VX220, was manufactured by Lotus, using a revamped Lotus Elise series 2 chassis..

The chassis had to be partly re-designed to accept the GM engine (in place of the Rover K-Series engine of the Elise)

The left-hand drive model was badged the 'Opel speedster' (for mainland Europe), while the right-hand drive model (for the UK) was badged as the 'Vauxhall VX220'

    2009-03-08 22:05:17.0

Yes but I didn't read what you said Morgan.  And it's an awful car anyway...

    2009-03-09 00:51:44.0

bullshit about the VX-220 being a Holden derivation

As far down the tube as holden has gone ... pinnacle was the HR X2 in my opinion, they would and should never assign their name to a poncy contraption like that one.

    2009-03-09 02:46:09.0

Leave the car alone lol.. I liked it...

    2009-03-09 20:04:02.0

Fear not. I'd never be able to catch up to it to inflict any damage.

    2009-03-10 03:39:44.0

    HAHAHAHAHA

    Too funny

    2009-03-10 03:41:43.0

Btw, I can't get enough of that article.. I've read it about 5 times now and it still amazes me...

    2009-03-10 22:30:11.0

It sure goes quicker than my Zero..Laughing

Would love to have a drive in it..

    2009-03-10 22:48:34.0

Oh gosh me too... I want Jeremy Clarkson's job...

    2009-03-10 23:02:53.0

    Get in line!

    >:-O

    2009-03-11 00:41:32.0

Richard knows what he's talking about.

(apologies if you've seen it before)

    (actually no apologies)

    2009-03-11 01:56:43.0

They've done some great Landy clips

    2009-03-11 02:21:08.0

Which, I guess, is why loads of people say they would rather push a Landrover than drive one of the other pretend 4wd's.   Although, as Top Tear also showed us, the Hilux does come in as a reasonable racing second...

    2009-03-11 02:43:11.0

    Oh yes, sure does...

But not stock standard though, right? Needs work

    2009-03-11 02:43:58.0

    Soooo would need work lol

    2009-03-11 17:11:07.0

Don't know much about the newer hilux except the neighbours got one and coupled with its 17 inch alloy wheels it looks more your sports car than a ute that you would be prepared throw about and I suspect the price tag matched the visual assessment. The older ones always looked to narrow in the track and the slightest suspension lift would make it look like as poxy as a narrow gauge railway caboose. So already you need to a set of (illegal) wheel spacers to broaden the track. Either that or wide wheels with a massive offset. Then flare the guards and hope the new dimensions don't cost you a set of wheel bearings and sundry once a year. That all said we had a couple of late 80's early 90's hilux bangers at the last job and they seemed to cope with the treatment dished out which proportionally ranged from amateur to professional off roaders as punishing to punishing. The one with the petrol engine was a heap and generally taken out last. They eventually got superceded by a fleet of two newer ... late 90's Mitsushitti Tritons which were no end of trouble and disappointment. The best hilux ... a 1988 2.8 litre NA Diesel was kept on the books and was referred to as the Triton recovery vehicle.
