German luxury carmaker BMW has officially revealed its first-ever double-clutch gearbox dubbed “M DCT” that will be initially available on all M3 variants (Coupe, Sedan and Convertible). As with VW Group’s DSG dual-clutch gearbox, the M DCT promises to offer much smoother and faster shifts and at the same time reduced fuel consumption compared to a conventional system such as BMW’s semi-automated SMG transmission.
The driver can control the transmission by the selector lever or via paddles on the steering wheel. According to BMW, the M3 Coupe fitted with the M DCT dual-clutch gearbox sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 sec (M3 Coupe with manual gearbox: 4.8 sec).
Woo hoo! That's exciting!
Yes...yes it is...*sets fire to own elbow*
grrrrrrrrr
You are posting that one quite often these days. Is it an acronym for something?
An acronym for 'I'm mad and on the verge of dangerous'
Gee, another gearbox that "almost as good as a conventional manual". Why don't these guys wise up and realise that the trick paddle shift rubbish only makes sense on a track? For street driving give me a conventional box any day. Ugh.
Unless you're one of those to whom the street and track are the same![]()
I spotted some article about a BMW X1. I wonder if that will be as crappy as the X3? They might put this double clutch thingy on it though to make it more appealing to the numb-skulls out there...
X1??? What?! WHy?!?!
What in the world is BMW on?
Great! (If you like pint sized all wheel drives).![]()
Silly silly
I emplore to BMW,
Fix the Mini and bring back Triumph!
I don't get it. I always thought to get a double clutch gearbox all one would need to do is remove the synchro's?
*shrug*
Or is it the case that it has two clutches and I've got my head up the back end on a draconian gearbox?
Two clutches - A two-mass flywheel serves as the torsion damper and the two clutches
are activated via an integrated hydraulic module. Dry sump lubrication, in turn, guarantees a high standard of reliability and maintenance-free function throughout the entire running life of the car.
As in "double de-clutching" in the days before synchros
C'mon people - seamless gear shift!!
Does that not make anyone else as happeee as it makes me?
Nope
*slaps forehead*
It works ok on F1's.
See!!
Tis a great thing!
Okay, I got more info from the CarsGuide newspaper -
Until now, double-clutch-style gearboxes have been restricted to small-capacity engines with moderate torque loads. BMW has designed its gearbox to deal easily with 9000 revs, yet maintain a consistent operation temperature.
Called the M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic, it will arrive with the MS convertible in July and will also be available on the M3 coupe. It will eventually replace the SMG sequential gearbox. The gearbox uses two oil-cooled wet clutches each responsible for different sets of gears. One clutch handles reverse, first, third, fifth and seventh gears, and the other the even ratios: second, fourth, sixth.
While driving, the transmission preselects the next gear, ensuring fast and smooth changes. The gearbox has 11 driver-selectable electronically controlled programs. These include five shift programs in the fully automatic mode and six in the manual mode.
These are supplemented by a selectable "launch control" program that provides blistering acceleration from the 309kW V8.
I get lost at the end, but the rest is very very exciting. I wanna drive one!!!
While driving, the transmission preselects the next gear
LOL. I usually like to go over the options just before I shift into the next gear also.
hahahaha
