Help me….my hard disk is damaged!!!
Seems disc-failure is a common thing (previous new topic being the same problem)
If you have a look in the topic "Looking for a solution to disk failure", the same advice will apply here as well.
One thing to be said about disk failure in general, although I know it doesn't help after the event, if you have important data that would hurt if it was lost, there should always be a backup copy somewhere. All disks fail eventually, if there's only one copy of something important then its only a matter of time.

Looking for a solution to disk failure!
I've heard before that putting a disk in the freezer for a while (sealed inside a waterproof bag) can get it working again for long enough to retrieve data.
That's assuming its a dead disk and not some other problem, but weird noises followed by seeming deadness seems pretty conclusive...

Don't know whether it'll be able to do much after the disk's been formatted, but Restoration is a decent un-deleter. Also doesn't require installation.

The next big thing from ATI is set to be the most powerful GPU yet, putting ATI on top again at long last, after trailing nVidia for so long (even if only briefly - nVidia doubtless have something planned as an answer to this)
It's uncertain whether it'll have the muscle to match some of the dual-GPU cards in nVidia's lineup, but there is also a dual-GPU version of this thing planned.

The PC I'm typing from:
My other main computer is a laptop, a Dell Inspiron 2200. Not much to boast about there though - 1.4GHz CPU, half a GB of RAM, and a 60GB hard drive
and you?

I grabbed a useful little doodad from Kingston's website that scans your computer and tells you exactly what kind of RAM you have installed and how much more you can add.
Now stored on a USB drive with all my other geeky tools and portable apps. ![]()

VS
The boxes are similar, the chips inside... well, that's the point of the discussion.

What's the full name of the 256MB ATI? Could be it's not that hot either.
It really depends what you want to do with it - doesn't sound like either one is going to make much of a games machine, so maybe it'd be best to cut your losses, take the better HD and battery and stick to less graphics-intensive stuff.

I tend to prefer ATI cards, the top-spec NVidia ones are astronomically expensive.
That may be because they're astronomically better, but looking at the highest end ATI cards like the HD 2900s, you can get 1GB of GDDR4 memory, a 750MHz GPU, and 320 pipelines for much less than NVidia's top of the range cards (and similarly priced NVidias are a lot lower specced)
It's similar to the Intel/AMD question - Intel has some chips that will perform stunningly well (3.0GHz quad core ones for example..) but cost something like £600, while for normal spec chips AMD are better value
Surprised we don't already have an Intel vs. AMD topic to go with the NVidia vs. ATI.. onesec

Graphics Cards - single or dual?
a) What's your setup?
b) In general which is judged to be better, one high-spec card, or 2 middle-spec cards?
c) Anyone run Sli (nVidia) or Crossfire (ATI)? How does it compare to 2 cards without the extra linkup?
