• a Hauppage Video Capture card that still has yet to become functional.

My other main computer is a laptop, a Dell Inspiron 2200. Not much to boast about there though - 1.4GHz CPU, half a GB of RAM, and a 60GB hard drive

I restarted comp, nothing worked. I finally got pissy and turned the whole thing (router etc etc) off at the mains. Turn it back on, and it works!
 

hehe, the old turn off and on again troubleshooting method, gotta love it

actually.. the logical response would be that you've gotta hate the fact that the platform everything's running on is so unstable that it has to be rebooted every so often to remain usable.

SK: What type of drive are you getting?

 

My current machine is a notebook, the Compaq nc8430, standard Tangler issue, but works really well for games.  It has an x1600 mobilitiy card in it which is enough for WOW and COH.

 

Same as Phonga, it's no the most beautiful laptop but it feels really well built.

umm.. no current plans to get more hard drives, the current ones are all SATA-300 and 7200rpm

Thanks! I think all up its around $1000-1500, somewhere in that price range. I havne't actually added up all the cost yet. I should probably do that!

I'm not sure about if i should get it now or wait until next year to upgrade, i'm hearing there is a lot of new stuff coming out at the start of next year. So that means i could get them, or even with the new releases coming out the stuff that i said before would come down in price.

Prices drop all the time, new stuff is always on the horizon.. it's a never-ending game if you play it that way 

I tend to just think "screw 3 months from now, I'm buying <item name here> and so what if its cheap or obsolete by then"

Then I later regret paying over the odds 

One thing that can significantly reduce costs is buying from ebay. If you stick to the near-new quality stuff it'll serve you as well as a new component (and hell, it'll be up for replacement before that long anyway )

This PC has 2.4ghz of pure processing power and 256mb of ram. It produces more heat than Playboy and has a 40gb hard drive. Oh yeah!

I'm happy to say that i just bought a Nvidia 8800GT by Asus. Can't wait to receive it. Should come next week!

hmm, interesting. The cheapest 8800GTX (768MB ScanFX 8800GTX) is roughly comparable in price to the most expensive 8800GT (1GB Gainward 8800GT) and the same price falls in the middle to top end of the range of the 512MB 8800GTSs (512MB XFX 8800GTS). Wonder which would kick the most graphics ass out of the 3

Although of course you can get a GT or a GTS for considerably less than those, just a question of whether the change of chipset makes that much difference

The GT's have a great price/performance ratio. Thats why so many are out of stock or on backorder. Should be good though to play some more recent games!

I have heard good things about the 512MB GTSs though.. how much was your GT?

i payed a bit more then the original price that it started off as, due to demand. I got it for $400. I dont really mind that i payed more for it, yeah i guess i could of gotten it for cheaper if i waited longer but now i'll have a good card. Something that i haven't had in awhile. I'm looking forward to it!  

 

Sounds about the same as we'd pay for one over here (the price of the high-end one I mentioned earlier was £234, they go down as low as £117, but only as low as £174 for a 512MB card)

2GB RAM is still pretty nice (although I do have more of that too )

Water cooling is good... I'm not sure if I'd be completely comfortable having water circulating so close to sensitive expensive electronics, but that's just the paranoia talking, and if it's quiet then all the better (mine keeps the noise down by having a passively cooled graphics card and quiet fans )

Is the water cooled system completely silent?

Not completely silent - theres still 2 x 25cm case fans making a little bit of noise, but as soon as you put some music on you can't hear them.

hehe, mine's pretty much that quiet already 

1x120mm, 1x60mm, a CPU cooler and the PSU fan.. all fairly clean and quiet. If the room's silent then it's a low level whir in the background, but anything at all that's more interesting to listen to and it fades away into the ether.

I wonder if we would be comfortable using completely noiseless comps.... noise is such a part of the environment

Hmm, if it didn't make any noise i'd be forever wondering if it was working or not.

I'd be fine with a silent computer - you know it's working because stuff is happening on the screen

Might take a bit of getting used to when you hit the on button and don't hear all the fans spin up, but still, I could live with that

But... but.... what will lull me to sleep then?!
