It's all well and good to change your light globes and have shorter showers, but what are some less obvious, practical ways to reduce your GreenHouse Gas emissions?

we have just begun cooking using the microwave rather than the oven - microwaves use approx 50% less energy than conventional ovens, but it is only really practical for food which contains water... anyone tried making tea or coffee in the microwave as opposed to the kettle? I haven't tried this one....

Really? I didn't know the microwave was that efficient. That's great.

The easiest one to do is replace incandescent light bulbs with CFLs.  I did that with my outside floodlights and really noticed the difference in my electricity bill.  For lights that you leave on for a long time the CFLs make good sense, and if you'd like more light in a particular light fixture, you can put a bigger bulb that the 'rated' wattage as CFLs draw about 1/5 the power and produce far less heat.  I have 2 100W-equivalent CFL bulbs in my lamps in the living room with were only rated for 2x60Watt incansecents.  More light, and the total wattage draw is actually less than 50 watts for both 100W equivalent bulbs.

I came across this, and thought it was a great way to illustrate the point:
