i could be sick of it......but i am still totally addicted and reliant.....

A lappie can die on you anytime. One moment you have a functioning motherboard, the next you don't.

Then they tell you that you can get the hard drive out and put it in a case and get all your data back.

So you buy a case, send the case and the lappie to a comp shop, pay them to do it, and get your hard drive handed back to you.

You plug the case into a comp you've managed to borrow, and you see folders there. Yippee!

Click on the folder with all your files in it, and it says it's protected.

Well I'm sick and tired of my stupid flatmate and her stupid dinosaur computer. This thing,  is like as big as a car tire, (yes, seriously) and old as shit and she's pissing me off because she DOESN'T CARE!! she wont upgrade and then has a go at ME for not being able to get the internet running on it.

Well, sorry honey, if there's no port for my cable then you'd better be off and get yourself some hardware, otherwise you're gonna get nothing.

AND then she expects ME to get it for her because 1- she's too stupid about computers to know what she needs to get, and 2- because apparently its my problem.

If I had that kind of money to spend on a motherboard then I'd... have a really awesome motherboard.

I'd guess their justification is the fiddly work involved with removing the mobo from a laptop, then putting a new one in without all the other stuff in there refusing to go back into the case... but still, that's not right.

Microsoft support stuff is good for precisely one thing - occasionally explaining the most retarded depths of their system, when said system is in contravention of what common sense and logic would suggest to be the answer. They built it, so they're the only ones who know what the hell's really going on in there.

For the "don't want a 'puter, just want the 'net" people, there is always the new breed of teeny little laptops (Asus EEE et al) which are essentially just a way onto the net... not enough computing muscle or storage space for much else.

I dunno why you would spend so much either, I mean, where are you shopping? Not the Dell store, surely?  And you can replace  motherboard yourself you know..

I miss my lappie too, I have loaned it to my daughter, (she's a teacher) they've just bought a Mac at home and she hasn't recieved her lappie from the education dept as yet and she needs to use some software from the school which isn't compatible with the Mac, so she has borrowed mine for a couple of weeks.

Now the hard drive I paid $30 to recover from the old lappie is dead.

One moment it was fine, the next, it wouldn't be read.

I've tried every file recovery software I could get my hands on, no go.

What does putting in the freezer do?

Apart from making it cold...

Freezing hard drives can sometimes mysteriously make them work again for a while... long enough to salvage your data maybe... never a permanent fix though.

Likely something to do with making the metal contract, so jammed components come loose again.
