  • Website Links

    Hi,

Here is my website link:  http://www.pageflakes.com/kgarvin/24227252 .

It is a website designed to accompany a unit on the first-year reading that is required of all incoming freshman.  It's close to being done, I think.  I have my survey monkey link posted, but I don't know if it is what Al is looking for.  Al, if you're reading this, please let me know if this is acceptable.

    Thanks.

  • Mark and Kim's Website Discussion

    Hi, Mark,

Thanks for the feedback on the site.  Yuck, the scrollbars.  I know.  I created this on a 24in Mac, tested it on a PC with a larger screen, and never had a problem until this weekend when I looked at it on my 12in laptop. I don't know what I'm going to do about that.  I'm not going to re-create the whole thing, but I might need to change the layout to a 50/50 split on those pages that have the videos.

I don't believe that Pageflakes offers me the ability to delete posts but, then again, I wouldn't delete posts.  In a real-world situation, only the people enrolled in my class would take it, so I wouldn't need to worry about trolling weirdos.  I don't believe in deleting or modifying student posts.  If someone posts something inappropriate, then it will be up to me to work through it with the others.

As for your site, I like the clean layout, and am really impressed with all of your information and features.  My site is dedicated to a particular unit in a full term--after the term unit is over, no one will be trekking back there.  But yours is sticky--full of useful information that people would want to refer back to. (And by people, I mean me, because I really need to go ahead and set up SharePoint for myself and show it to my colleagues.)

I also like that you have a blog feature, which will keep your site fresh.  (Well,  you know, if you keep up with it.)  And, I noticed that were in Meebo this morning, so I just sent you a message.  I have to say, I would never stay logged into Meebo (or any other IM program); I would feel too much pressure to keep checking for messages (hence the virtual office hours on my site). How did you get Meebo to match the color of your layout?  It must be more customizable than I noticed at first glance.

One question, though:  What is the difference between Vista and Mojave (forgive my ignorant Mac-user question).   I like this quote:  "Users of Windows Mojave are 60% less likely to be infected by malware than users running Windows XP SP2".  That's only because Mojave is new.  If it were around for longer, the malware would catch up.  And, please don't think that I write that as a smug Mac-user who thinks that Macs are impervious to hacking.  I think that if Mac had a larger market share, we'd see more hackers working to create malware for Macs.

Anyway, good job.  It feels great to be in the home stretch, right?

    See you online.

  • Introduce Yourself

    Hi,

It's Kim Giacalone.  I'm the associate director of the SPD Online program.  I also used to teach non-credit computer classes on the side (Photoshop, Fireworks, Office, etc.), but then I had a child a few years ago. So instead of making extra money, I'm now watching my net worth decline (but it's worth it.  Really.) Smile.  I, too, enjoy a good burrito.
