With so many social applications that have groups of people and friends, I find that no one is doing subgroups that act like distribution lists. I would be more happy to add lots more people to facebook if I could allocate them into groups. Close friends, chool pals, sport buddies, family.

I know it complicates things, but I think in some instances it makes it more useful.

Twitter is definitely one that I want subgroups for. I'd have SMS on for certain groups and not for others.

Any examples you've seen of good aps doing subgroups?

Or any apps that really need it?

Facebook needs it... GReader with its 'share this' thing

Frankly, all existing social networks do. They're all too linear for human relationships

good point about Twitter - I walk a line between the Scoble approach of following (not all) most of those who follow me (except the ones that are just companies pumping out pr) and a more "only peeps I really want to talk to" approach. I'd like to be able to scan the contributions of the jowyangs and your good selves, without some of the noise from some others. And agree re FB
