The following link shows details of the 24 F1 deaths that have occurred since 1954.
There are some horrifying details and some extreme bad luck.
It does, however, show the immense safety improvements in car design (in particular the monocoque), that we see today.
There has not been a death for 15 years...
Yeah. No major injuries in a long while as well.
That I like about the sport.
(I also like the fact that there's a topic I can finally look at in here!
Fell asleep in the first few laps so am still avoiding spoilers. Tho I know who won. Still....)
Yes, I remember seeing some of those crashes on the old newsreels at the movies and a few of the later ones on tv..
I think the nastiest crash I have seen (in recent years) was Robert Kubica crashing head on into a concrete wall at the 2007 Montreal GP...I thought he would have been killed for sure, but he was discharged from hospital after two or three days with just a sore leg...absobloodylutely amazing...
Yeah, that one and Ralf Schumacher flying over someone and into the barriers at the Melb GP a few years ago.
Those two stick out in my mind
Oh yeah, Ralfy's was a good one as well..(forgot about that)![]()
I remember Hakkinen, or was it Coulthard, literally flying through the air for about 30 metres, in recent history. Please help to refresh memory...
I don't remember. Might have been before my time.
I found this. Is that it?
No...that's not it. I'm fairly sure it was DC in Australia
Oh okay
Didn't find anything flying![]()
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=David+Coulthard+Australia+crash&aq=f
The list does not include death during "testing". ie. Elio de Angelis 1986.
Oh yeah, that was the guy driving for 'Brabham' when Bernie owned it..He was quite a flamboyant character..
Not really trivia or breaking news, but...
(1) Henry Surtees, the son of former F1 World Champion John Surtees, has died following an accident during the second FIA Formula Two Championship race of the weekend at Brands Hatch.
The 18-year-old was involved in a freak accident during the race when he was struck on the head by an errant wheel that had broken away from the car of Jack Clarke after he went off into the barriers on the exit of Westfield......
http://www.crash.net/f1/news/150034/1/henry_surtees_killed_in_f2_accident.html
(2) As expected, Scuderia Toro Rosso has confirmed that Jaime Alguersuari will step up to partner Sebastien Buemi from this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, replacing the lacklustre Sebastien Bourdais in what becomes an all-rookie line-up.
http://www.crash.net/f1/news/150037/1/toro_rosso_confirms_alguersuari.html
Yeah, I saw that news of the death.
There have been 2 (or maybe 3) deaths in racing this week![]()
And bourdais is planning to sue
Sue who?
Torro rosso
Sue Torro Rosso? Who's she?
*rolling eyes*
ah that one ![]()
Trouble maker!
Yeah john won the WDC with Ferrari in 1964, after a brilliant career on mororcycles...
It's sad.
Yeah it is, only 18 too...
Yeah
Alonso to Drive a Ferrari at Valencia??
http://www.f1complete.com/content/view/13715/900/
Surely he wouldn't stoop so low...
LOL!!
Well I would have to search for the relevant documents,but when Massa was first injured and people were postulating as to who could drive his car at the Hungaroring, someone ptoduced the FIA rules which said something like "At the start of the season each team may nominate four drivers who could be used at any time during the season as long as the driver was declared prior to the beginning of the practice session".
Ferrari's nominated drivers are Kimi, Felipe, Marc Gene and Luca Badoer, so that would rule out either, Alphonzo or even Schumi (who is also being mentioned) To drive a Ferrari in Valencia..
Ferrari has 38-year-old Italian Luca Badoer, who started 49 races for Scuderia Italia, Minardi and Forti without scoring a point between 1993 and 1999, and 35-year-old Spaniard Marc Gene as their official reserves.
Personally I would go for Marc Gene...
Yeah, me too
He used to be a test driver for BMW if I'm not wrong?
Felipe Massa continues to make a great recovery
Budapest, 31st July - Felipe Massa's health condition is improving day by day so that a return back home could be imminent. If everything proceeds the best possible way, Felipe could leave Budapest on Monday to be brought to Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he will start rehabilitation.
Michael Schumacher tests F2007 at Mugello
Michael Schumacher has started his preparation for the European GP. Schumacher borrowed a F2007 to test at Mugello on Friday 31st July. Ferrari have applied for permission from all current F1 teams to allow Schumacher a one day test with the F60 chassis, all FOTA teams have agreed in a very nice sporting gesture to Ferrari.
Ah! So they agreed already!
Meanwhile, that car he borrowed was Kimi's old c'ship winning one![]()
I didn't know that..
Tis what the BBC said. Seems that they had to borrow it from a private owner.
What I wanna know is just who THAT is!
Hmmm, interesting question..
Certainly
All I can find out is that the car came from the 'Ferrari F1 Clienteli' who could be any customer of Ferrari..
Meanwhile, here's Michael hard at work in the F2007.....
They looked better then, don't you think?
MUCH
Esp the rear wing
Sleek and sexy
Now we have bulky weirdness
Agreed...
You both have bulky wierdness? ![]()
I'm still sleek and sexy
Psycho
jealous
Williams won't allow Schumy to test - http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns21701.html
You know what? Their reasoning makes complete sense for once
Why am I not surprised that Williams have adopted that attitude? ![]()
They stayed outside FOTA when they thought there might be something to gain by doing so..
Ah... so you'd like different sets of rules for different people
Not at all, but Toro Rosso didn't seek permission for Alguersuari to test in a F1 car, whereas Ferrari did ask..
Therin lies the difference..
No, it isn't.
Why ask for something which is clearly against the rules? That's were Toro Rosso come from.
Ferrari come from the 'We're special so you should bend the rules for us' camp
Ferrari come from the "our driver has just been seriously injured camp" and the "we want to replace him (temporarily) with a person who hasn't raced since 2006 and in the interests of safety would like him to be able to do a few laps in the car he will be driving", camp...![]()
Toro Rosso didn't think to ask, whereas Ferrari did and everyone (Except Williams) agreed to it..
Therin still lies the difference...still still still still still still still stillstillstillstillstillst![]()
Yes.... because I'm sure Ferrari don't have any other 3rd driver capable of doing the job
What a sorry state they must be in
Never heard of Marc Gene then?![]()
Either of their test drivers should have been used. They are both used to the F60.
I agree with Dee...it's just Ferrari thinking the rules are, or should be, different for them.
I really hope MS smashes the bloody car into a thousand pieces...Grrrrrrr
Why does that not surprise me either...It's called jealousy..![]()
Williams are right in saying 'no'. Their reasons are correct. They are not trying to spite FerrariOTA. Red Bull and Toro Rosso are also against the idea...
Bollocks...
Jealousy....Because the poms haven't been able to buld a winning F1 car/engine since 1965..
That's why you hate Ferrari, you don't like being beaten by the spag eaters..
Nah, in this case it's fairly obvious Ferrari are looking for special treatment.
If your guy can't drive without testing, get someone who can.
Sir Frank deserves another knighthood
LOL!
Hahahaha, the old ex Kiwi outfit, they've won nothing for 12 years and then they had to use Frog and Jap engines.(what a joke)![]()
...a thousand pieces...![]()
Alguersuari test request was turned down - Red Bull
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This had me going for a while...
Brawn could lose license for speeding
pffft 30 over the limit, that's nothing!
miles per hour
Still nothing!
It doesn't mention who turned down the Alguersuari request! So why has Shitty Mate got his knickers in a twist with Ferrari? I'll tell you why "JEALOUSY".
As for Brawn, wow, thats 160 Kph...![]()
...a thousand pieces...![]()
I am pleased to announce I did that in my rental in the US.
The difference is I didn't get caught![]()
I'm gonna dob you in..
My old Falcon does that...piece of piss
LOL!
Fowl Can..
Jap Crap..
Here is a little article about Luca Badoer...
And in case you've forgotten what he looks like......
Here he is...
Good lord. At first glance I thought it was Schumy!
Slightly cuter version though
...a thousand pieces...![]()
Huh?
Just ignore the peasant in the cheap seats, deezee...![]()
Hey andro...better get your recorder ready tonight...Judge John Deed (Martin Shaw) is back as George Gently...and it clashes with Friday Footy
Ah thanks for that, must record it...
Martin Shaw also was Doyle (of the Bodie and Doyle duo) in 'The Professionals', which also had Gordon Jackson as their boss..(1970's I Think)
Yes, remember it well...
I watched the show and thoroughly enjoyed it, but my he has aged a bit since those days..
But mind you that was 32 years ago and I was still pretty fit in those days as well..![]()
That was the pilot show from a couple of years back..Six more have been made since then...
Hey dek...how much spare cash do you have, cos...
Button is selling his Bugatti Veyron for $1.5m
He also owns a Mercedes CLK DTM AMG, a Mercedes C63 AMG, a Ferrari Enzo, an Audi RS6 Avant, a BMW M5, a Smart car, a 1970s 600cc Honda and a VW campervan!!!
I suppose andro will now bang on how Jenson drives a Ferrari
![]()
Button has a Bugatti??
Damn, I hates him more now
Smart car.... I knew there was something off about him!
Pity some of the smartness of the car hasn't rubbed off on him..
*evil grin*
To be honest, I hate that car. Everytime I see it, I scowl. And the name - Smart. What's so smart about it?? Damn smug automobile
I'd be ashamed to admit that I owned one of the ugly things..
Totally
Michael Schumacher is the latest to have reserved a $200,000 ticket for a seat aboard Richard Branson's forthcoming commercial space-airline Virgin Galactic, set to blast off in 2011. Niki Lauda and Rubens Barrichello have also bought tickets
Heh
So *that's* why Branson came into F1![]()
Yeah, just to drum up business..![]()
Well, let's face it.... it's a specific market, and the only buyers he'll find
From 'Not the F1 news'.......
New Role For Max
Through Max has indicated that he would now like to spend time reading the books he never had chance to tackle, there is news coming in of a fresh job offer for the FIA man. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said he is a big admirer of Mosley's ability to retain control without any kind of mandate from the people and wants him to join his cabinet in an advisory role. His press spokesman said Max would not be considering the offer; as it would mean turning down work already promised to Robert Mugabe. And if anybody was first in the queue, it was Vladimir.
Gold Watch Time
With Mosley leaving his role at the FIA in October, there have been strict instructions that nobody is to spoil it for Max by mentioning a whip round for a leaving present. Because apparently a whip round IS his leaving present.
HAHAHAHAHAAHA
Bernie Ecclestone has been shooting the breeze and giving his views about the state of politics in the world. It turns out Bernie is not a great fan of wussie democracies and prefers the firm hand of a tyrannical leader to steer the planet's destiny.
Here's Bernie's 'Best of' the world's dictators past and present:
Adolf Hitler: "In a lot of ways, terrible to say this I suppose, but apart from the fact that Hitler got taken away and persuaded to do things that I have no idea whether he wanted to do or not, he was in the way that he could command a lot of people, able to get things done."*
Saddam Hussein: "We did a terrible thing when we supported the idea of getting rid of Saddam Hussein. He was the only one who could control that country."*
Kim Jong-il: "They call him 'Dear Leader' don't they? Yes, he's an interesting man. Got a great sense of humour. Always likes letting off missiles on American national holidays. He'd be great on the World Motor Sport council."
Pol Pot: "He was a big Ferrari fan because of all that Khmer Rouge stuff. We never got round to running a grand prix in Phnom Penh. He was a bit naughty at 'disappearing' his population. You'd turn round for a minute and that'd be another 10,000 gone."
Robert Mugabe: "Bob is always on the phone trying to get a grand prix for Harare, but he hasn't got any money so I'm not interested."
Joseph Stalin: "Like me he was a country boy - I was from Suffolk and he was from Georgia and we both had to put up with city types taking the mickey. I suppose we took different approaches - I put my rivals out of business, while he just annihilated his."
Mussolini: "Wasn't he great at making the trains run on time. Silvio's not in the same league."
Mahmoud Ahmedinejad: "Mahmoud is another great joker, he loves winding up the Israleis almost as much as I like upsetting Ron Dennis, but I think it's all done in fun just to get a few headlines."
Max Mosley:"Max's great skill is being a dictator without anyone realising. He's great at working people, isn't he. You should see him and Alan Donnelly together - it's like Keith Harris and Orville. Not many people would be prepared to put their hand up there, either."
Fidel Castro:"Lovely man, great beard, but he does go on a bit."
* Incredibly, these two are verbatim quotes - the other quotes have not been verified and should be taken with a fair degree of scepticism.
hahahahaha People really don't like him do they?
No and I can't understand why..![]()
*grin*
