Story on PC world detailing one sad Macworld employee detailing his woes

Another story indicates AT&T is giving varied indications of what it causing the delays.... among them overwhelming activation volumes.  "Though most customers who have actually gotten to speak with AT&T customer service (hold times are over an hour in most cases) report being told they can expect a 2-6 hour wait, some have reported being told they may not have their iPhones activated for 24-72 hours."

Will iPhone live up to the expectations of today’s tech-savvy consumers? Here’s what BetUS.com is betting:

    • Consumers are reported camping out waiting for an iPhone—3/1
    • Initial iPhones get recalled—30/1
    • iPhone sells at least 12 Million units in 2008—5/6
    • Apple’s stock jumps at least 10% in value in regards to the price on 6/30/07—1/2
    • Consumers pay at least three times the original price ($1,500) on ebay—2/1
    • The screen breaks/cracks like Apple’s first-generation nano (iPod)—150/1
    • There are mass reports of the battery life being less than the promised 8 hours—10/1
    • Someone is trampled while trying to get an iPhone—20/1
    • iPhone spontaneously combusts—150/1

I've been waiting for all of these to happen:P

I dunno why, but I keep having the feeling that a recall will happen. Which really doesn't make sense, cos I'm sure Apple won't release a below par product now would they?

    2007-06-29 23:26:02.0

I won't be getting one, no 3G, are you kidding me? A touchscreen that starts to lose functionality within 12 months? and a price that could be used as a a payment for a hitman!

    2007-06-30 04:55:05.0

It's not the phone, just AT&T's crappy preparation (and I think 3G may be coming on this phone in the future, no new hardware needed; note: sim cards in the phone say 3g on them). Here's my story.

I plugged in my phone and "activated" at 7:15 Central time.  Got the email I was waiting for at 2:23 AM which said my plan wasn't compatible. Called customer service around 9:00 and was done about 10:30, was told to go down to the Cingular store and get a "dummy" SIM card which would trick the network or something. Instead they simply signed me up for the a new plan, but my iPod won't restart the activation process!!!!

I simply need the process to be reset for my phone. WHY CAN'T THEY DO THIS!?!?

AT&T obviously didn't prepare for this more than a few weeks. They had several months to figure this out and they still dropped the ball.

    2007-06-30 09:29:39.0

I could have avoided the whole process had I simply signed up for a new plan on iTunes to begin with. Instead they didn't tell me my plan wouldn't work and I didn't find out until 12 hours later.

I would put money on there being an upgraded version within a year that has 3G and any other pertinent features not in the original.

That way the early adopters get to have a shiny new toy twice, Apple gets paid twice and everyone who didn't buy the first becase they expected this gets to pat themselves on the back for waiting and not wasting their money on the first one.

The only people who lose are those who aren't gadget-nuts, would have preferred to save money but didn't anticipate the upgrade. These people will however blame themselves and take it as a lesson for the future

    Apple = geniuses

    2007-06-30 09:41:40.0

    I hate APPLE!
    >:-O

I should say tho, seeing a few video reviews floating out there, even I have been tempted... It does look like a must have gadget! (Of which I have none anyways)

    2007-06-30 22:41:34.0

yeah, I have to say that I'll wait for the second generation, just like the iPod, the second generation was much better on all fronts. but AT&T really messed things up for a lot of people.

    2007-07-01 09:34:19.0

oh the fun of early adoption

    2007-07-29 07:57:40.0

I have no complaints (of course I'm an early adopter all around - Pre-beta copy of Vista, beta copies of Leopard, I really don't mind putting my technology at risk, as long as I'm running with the most advanced stuff out there). The phone was worth the money for me, without a doubt, even if they do come out with an updated version.

can not app into it, think about it.. not a smartphone really, if you can not install any app

    2007-08-01 08:30:41.0

Why not? You must have a strang definition of a smartphone if you consider not being able to install apps a major defining characteristic.

The definition from Wikipedia is as follows:

"A smartphone is generally considered any handheld device that integrates personal information management and mobile phone capabilities in the same device. Often, this includes adding phone functions to already capable PDAs or putting "smart" capabilities, such as PDA functions, into a mobile phone."

While installing apps is not officially possible, it will likely be unofficially possible in just a few weeks (as there are already small applications running on the phone). In addition, Apple will most definitely release a development platform for the phone. Until then, however, many of the web applications currently set up for the iPhone rival the applications on other smartphone operating systems. While not installed on the phone itself, these applications offer just as much functionality as their counterparts on other devices (and sometimes even more functionality).

My advice - Wait till the second generation comes out. My frustration will be sending my phone in when the battery starts to lose its charge, and I have to send it off to Apple. If they send my iPhone, that has a shield zone skin on it, to someone else, I will be very disappointed.

    2007-08-10 17:19:50.0

Reason to wait: $595 seems like a lot of money.

Reason not to wait: an incredible breakthrough device, the best phone I have ever had, increasingly amazed at the things that work easily - the more I use it the more I love it.

Wait for the second generation?  Nah.  I'll be first in line to buy the second generation, but I'll just be upgrading from the first generation.  Which is still the best phone anyone has every made.

I do not know about all that. I have become bored with mine. Steve Jobs should have allowed developers to make applications for the iPhone directly, instead of having to use the web. Also, EDGE here is horrible. It seldom works as it should on my Blackberry, let alone my iPhone.

When the OLED technology becomes more mainstream, and touchscreen technology becomes more perfected, as well as new innovations in telecom emerge, I think we may see an even better device than the iPhone.

Maybe when Apple releases the next set of applications, like iChat, then I might not be so bored with it. Also, if your a Windows user, like I am, some iPhone features may not be available as they are to some of the Macintosh users.
