RFID is a sequel to the barcode. What is it used for?

I found this clip, as a weird example:

    Would "Parents" use this?

"RFID is a sequel to the barcode. What is it used for?" - Everything.

Your car could unlock the door without any need to pick up the keys.XP

You can identify and count stuff. You can authenticate stuff and people. You can do anything you want. Imagination!

I have all my doors locked with RFID systems; just by reaching for the door handle, it's unlocked by a tag in the arm of my jacket (I have another in my wallet, just incase, of course). I've been considering building a system to RFID-salt various things in the house; clothes so I know when a given piece of clothing has gone X amount of days without a wash, or things in my refrigerator.

On the topic of that video, I've been considering having a RFID 'pill' injected into the thenar web of my right hand (that's the extra skin between the thumb and forefinger); means I don't have the chance of loosing access to everything I lock with RFID (forgot to mention, my computer has a scanner, so some things are encrypted unless _my_ arm's over the scanner under the desk under my mouse's pad) that I do by relying on my jacket and wallet

    2007-12-31 22:49:35.0

    Wow! That's pretty cool!:O

    2007-12-31 23:35:48.0

    That's seriously nerdy!

    I want that too! :'(

Well, i guess everyone will have a chip. I'm a bit sceptic about being tracked anytime everywhere.

I also think that everyone will pay with this thing. A hopefully "always credible" lifetime ID, without a chance to start over again.

I don't like to think of being treatable by chief justice for every single action of my life.

What if your behaviour(and i guess it will) gets categorized to limit or extend your opportunities?

I guess there would be no other chance than to live your life the way it was meant to be lived by very friendly people who care about your safety and happyness!

I see it going this way -

    Attempt #1
Government: We want to implant you with an ID chip
    Population: Hells no!

    Attempt #2
Government: We want to implant you with this ID chip, it's also a portable web browser, media player, TV and phone
    Population: Awesome!

    2008-01-10 10:30:04.0

Not necessarily SK. Sure, you could play up the advantages, but i wouldn't want anything implanted in me. Having to carry something around is completely different from inserting something under the skin

    2008-01-10 15:25:58.0

But what if it's in some kind of tube right under your skin so that you can remove it yourself (and forget it being there)?

    2008-01-10 23:16:14.0

    It's still under my skin

    2008-01-11 02:36:41.0

There's an argument to be made for it being a slippery slope... and another argument that it wouldn't work properly, would cost too much, would be open to abuse in some way or another, and such.

The government here has had several "scandals" (read: overhyped news events) involving data security, don't know why they're actively trying to open the way for another one.

    2008-01-14 10:00:30.0

Oh yeah, that's a good point...

    2008-01-14 15:36:45.0

"prisoners to be chipped", gives a totally independed 404 now.

i don't exactly know why, but i guess the links name itself encourages too much creativity on thinking about things like who actually could be seen as prisoners(in a global sense), and that such thoughts have negative effects regarding "pro-chip" propaganda.

i guess super-kings attempt#2 is the way it's done. nothings gonna happen without people demanding it. if it's not entertainment, it's security/safety. wouldn't it be a "good" reason for "money/power/controll addicted people" to conduct terror and fear for making everyone want these expensive chips?

it reminds me of benjamin franklin and friends, who lived and live the idea of "people who give away freedom for safety don't deserve freedom and safety".(excuse my bad translation) isn't this what actually happens world wide?

it's big crap happening these days. forces see war as an opportunity to establish peace and democracy. they tell the whole world that it's done for the benefit of mankind and a human(social) future, at least for surviving generations. at the same time, they fight democrats and social ideas in an unspeakable manner(movies/comedies/soaps/ads and waht t.f. so ever do have the power to mold the values of the public just this inhuman, asocial, sad, angry, mad, ... way).

yesterday it was just traditional organiced crime, today it's global terrorism, and tomorrow it's enemy unknown from outer space. what i want to tell is that if we loose our ability to trust in peace(even if it's strangers!), we and our children will rest in fear, without rights and possibilities to change anything. social skillz, non totalitarian and open views are absolutely needed to handle this a "futurable" way.

a chip does the same thing to safe people a camera does. nothing. except reconstructing/resuming over and over what no one wanted to happen. at the same time, people start believing/acepting that they're stupid, bad and guilty by nature, like the church always knew. this, (in my opinion), is a dangerous recipe to disempower people on a global scale. what i'm afraid of is, that if poeple are more likely to become nihilists/atheists, and deal with shitty shit shit just because of "power" and money for a lifetime, they are more likely to give a fuck on others future until there's nothing left worth living. except credits, food and sex:)

sorry for this long piece of s* even i don't want to think about. but hey, maybe something good happens.

i don't really believe in rebirth or things like this, but i believe there are others after us, and i don't want to give things like the church a reason to tell people they're guilty for everything and therefore living in a hell on earth...

RFID can be used for, and are already used for a bunch of good things - but forcing everybody to wear RFID tags is just wrong.

    2008-02-06 10:23:07.0

yes, i guess that's what i wanted to say too:)

    2008-02-08 02:39:40.0

I never see everyone having RFID chips implanted in them happening. Politicians are too corrupt, and everyone would have to include them. If they were to implement this I would want a random search of politicians done that shows how many of them have it done. Besides, this would probably just be like Minority report where someone in some dirty old apartment with an ugly nurse will be able to take it out and stick in a new one. Just think of it as any electronic gizmo... It can be hacked, it can be changed, it can be disabled. Google RFID jammer and you will thousands of hits on the topic.

Therefor it is a flawed technology and will never be taken seriously by the techno gurus. Sure its great for conventions, tracking inventory, "criminals," ... etc.

Remember what Roosevelt said: "The only sure bulwark of continuing liberty is a government strong enough to protect the interests of the people, and a people strong enough and well enough informed to maintain its sovereign control over the government."

    2008-02-19 18:17:44.0

a people strong enough and well enough informed to maintain its sovereign control over the government.

This is the part that could be a problem ;)

    2008-02-20 08:16:42.0

I agree. However rude it may sound I consider 75% of the world to be "dumb." I honestly believe that anyone can get anywhere they want to be in life as long as they are motivated. But everyone just conforms... Not many people feel like doing anything about the corruption in our world. They just deal with it. As I was growing up and learning about how dirty a good majority of corporate business is I would talk to my parents about it and they would always seem okay with it, and to this day I dont understand why.

But going back to this RFID thing, I thought it was interesting to find out my library is starting to use RFID

    2008-02-26 18:17:55.0

We are getting RFID for our basement.

    2008-02-27 08:30:22.0

    Do you mean WiFi?

    2008-02-28 09:15:31.0

Don't you know what RFID are? NUUUUUUUBBBBEEESSSS!!!!

(Translation: You are a are lame and should do some Googling.)

We are getting some kind of "tags" that we use to lock up the doors to the basement a few seconds at a time. (We live in an apartment building, there's probably +30 more families.)

    2008-02-28 09:27:48.0

I know what an RFID tag is, I just didn't see the application to "getting RFID" for a basement.

    2008-02-28 10:20:10.0

I am going to carry around a little RFID tag and hold it up next to the tag reader to unlock the door for a few seconds. And it will be used for the entrance too. Useful on the evenings and nights because of the $]}€}£@@}´ lock that I hate that's only locked after 21.

    2008-02-28 11:28:00.0

Ahhhh..... Well, how was I supposed to know you lived in an apt block?

Couldn't for the live of me imagine why you needed RFID for a basement in a house

    2008-02-28 21:24:55.0

Dek, it's a well known fact that basements regularly run away, and if they're not properly tagged then they don't always get returned to their rightful owner.

    2008-02-29 08:16:23.0

@S.Mon: HOW DID YOU KNOW!?!?!?!? Surprised

We just lost it twice yesterday and had to call the cops to report it missing both times.

    2008-02-29 12:52:11.0

well, that's why it would be safe right under your skin?

    2008-05-27 07:18:08.0

i'd recommend to check out some movies tagged with "surveillance" at--> mininova.org

there're quite interesting pieces regarding RFID and it's usage. like in holland, where it became a new trend to frequent cashless bars and clubs.
you do whatever you like there, and go back to sleep/work afterwards. or the new way of shopping: you buy anything you want/can and big brother knows when you're going to get fresh milk again. for example. isn't thi s***???

    2008-05-27 07:24:49.0
