    I need a new phone. I don't want to wait for iphone. Looks too painful.

    Here is what I need;

    * Great hands free.

    * Works in Australia, USA and UK. Preferable in most countries.

    * Full keyboard if possible for emails.

    * Receives emails from multiple pops.

    * Can have a chess game on it.

    * Fit's into pocket.

    What do you recommend?

    Are you looking for a phone or a pc?

    :O

    Gee, sounds like a Kjam would work really well for you.  Mine does all of these things, but POP email is pull rather than push.

    any Nokia N series or Symbian based is ok. I have an old Nokia 3650 (yes, the big one with circular keyboard) and it was enough for everything what you need. Of course it's kinda old today..

    Okay Mick I went to a person who is almost a specialist in the area of phones just to see his out take on a phone - here is what he suggests

    A few things I'm not sure about is whether or not they need 3G access (DSL speeds) from their phone so they can either surf the web and/or use it as a modem for their laptop.  In addition, I don't know if they need Microsoft Exchange email access.  Finally, how much are they willing to pay?

    With that being said, here is what I would recommend:

    Phone    Pros/Cons
    -----------    --------------------------
    Samsung Blackjack    Good form factor. 3G access should only work in the United States since the US
       as a different network than Europe & Australia. Supports Exchange, POP3 &
       IMAP email. May have difficulty finding an unlocked version. Has a camera.
       Expensive.

    Nokia E61(my phone)    3G access will work in Europe & Australia. Supports all flavors of email - IMAP,
       POP3, Exchange, Blackberry.   A little large, but is comparable to a blackberry.
       Has WiFi so it can connect to hotspot wireless networks; i.e. coffee shops, book
       stores, etc.  Expensive. No camera.

    Sony Ericsson 600i   Great form factor. Great screen. 3G network access. Supports all email protocols.
      Has a camera. Relatively inexpensive.  Has a funky keyboard, so it will take
      some time to get used to. However, reviews indicate that it works quite well once
      you figure it out. Triband GSM which might cause coverage problems in rural US.
      No impact to usage in Europe/Australia and will be fine in metro areas of the US.

    I would recommend the 600i provided he doesn't need it in the rural U.S. and he won't be tapping out emails continuously throughout the day.  It has the best combination of features for the price.

    I have a Pocket PC phone that I love Mick.  It's made by HTC, my model is the 6700 from Sprint but there's many diff providors with this phone around, plus I didn't get mine from sprint, i just bought off eBay and i couldn't be happier.

    2007-02-01 16:38:12.0

       They just came out with the 6800 too, it's the same but better camera, etc.  This phone does everything the iPhone says it will do but it's been doing it for almost 2 years now.  I use it for TV on the go, streamed from my home PC & also for my main car radio with my audio based off my home PC server as well.  I would only be happier with this phone if the providers made it possible to get only their wireless web service without the Phone contract, we don't need contracts or cell service anymore if you have voip with the wireless web, It's beautiful guys.  I dream of a world with One monthly bill:)

    There's a new HTC coming out like the KJAM but adds a better processor and... wait for it.... GPS!:)

    2007-02-02 02:24:46.0

    Hmmm, what about the Nokia N95 .  It's got one of the best mobile browsers, a cool GPS mapping app, WiFi, 5MP camera and a nice big screen.  Symbian should allow you to have your chess game too... No full keyboard though.  And Symbian is a better mobile phone UI compared to Pocket PC. The N95 is the phone I expect to get while I wait for my iPhone

    Sybian... ugh. Just so incompatible:)

    2007-02-27 00:58:26.0

    sync never works well - activesync and now vista mobile centre is just *so* good

    2007-02-27 00:58:43.0

    And from an interface point of view I have no issues with windows mobile, works great.

    2007-02-27 00:59:07.0

    (I'm sure others do though)

    2007-02-27 00:59:15.0

    That's cute!

    OK, some other bits I missed for my phone, and now I really need to get it quickly....

     Needs to be Mac compatible.

    Needs to have a digital camera, at least 2mp with auto focus and light or pref flash.

    2007-04-28 10:48:25.0

    But thanks for everyone's advice.  The nokia looks cool and might be fine without a full keyboard. Great camera.

    2007-04-28 10:48:54.0

    Get the N95 if you can afford it and don't mind dropping the full keyboard. Just picked mine up the other day and I love it already. By far the best phone I've ever owned or used. Blows the Windows Mobile phones (PPC and Smartphone) away.

    whatever you do Mick don't buy an imate JasJam / HTC Tytn / AT&T 8525 - both Holly my wife and I both bought one (JasJam her - Tytn me) and both had/have serious screen fade issues (and the camera's crap)
