Hmms. Sorry about the blank spaces. Anyway it's a great camera. Intuitive, fits in my pocket, no camera shake, naturally works beautifully with my VAIO.

    2007-01-31 20:07:12.0

    Damn.... that's a nice camera...

I want a slim one... Didn't realise size mattered till I got a fairly bulky one. Way too much trouble

    2007-01-31 20:32:50.0

Does it support Raw or just jpeg?  Raw is great.

    2007-01-31 21:46:11.0

oh dear.... what in th world is Raw??

    2007-01-31 21:50:04.0

    Not sure. Ask Uncle E.

    2007-01-31 21:57:19.0

    Uncle E, what's Raw??

    2007-01-31 22:00:15.0

Raw is just a raw dump from what the camera's sensor sees, so it's kinda like a digital negative.  It gives you the ability to further process the image in an advanced editor like Photoshop, and fix errors that ordinarily are unrecoverable.  The downside is that you need to process each image seperately after it is shot (there are batch ways to do this) so it's really more time consuming, but gives you more control.  I shoot raw as my default, as you can never undo things like compression artifacts or severe under/over exposure, but it means I need to take more time in post-processing and need heaps of storage (but I've heard it is cheap...).  It's not something I'd use to shoot a picture for something I'm selling on Ebay, but for an a4 or a3 (8x10 or 11x17) you can't beat it.

    2007-02-01 01:20:22.0

Any cameras available with bluetooth photo transfer (or wifi)?

    2007-02-01 02:26:24.0

With my baby, who needs Bluetooth or WiFi.

    2007-02-01 02:31:39.0

I have always been "scared" of digital and I love my good old Nikon 35mm - takes beautiful pictures and I love all the different lenses.  My husband is a gadget whore so to speak and couldn't stand the 35 mm any longer so he purchased me the Nikon D80 - it is wonderful and my lenses are interchangable:)  So I can use either my beloved 35 mm or my new digital 35 mm (bulky yes, but I don't mind in the least - love exchanging lenses and such).....

    Nikon D80 User Report

    by Shawn Barnett

The new Nikon D80's combination of high-end features and its 18-135mm DX kit lens make a killer photographic tool for the amateur and intermediate photographer who can't afford or justify the extra cost of the Nikon D200.

While it is very similar to its predecessor, the Nikon D70s, and sports the higher 10.2 megapixel resolution of the D200, the Nikon D80 is replete with new features and advances in overall quality that make it a great upgrade for D50 and D70 owners, plus a compelling "other choice" for those who've been looking at (or waiting for) a Nikon D200. Finally, because its controls are so similar to the D2X and D200, pro photographers may want to pick up a D80 as a second or third body to take along instead of their heavier pro cameras.

    Thanks Eric!

That is really interesting.... I had no idea 'developing' pics would be back in vogue again, but I'm kinda relieved it is

    Amy - 'gadget whore'

ROFL!! That's my new fav term!

    2007-02-01 06:42:38.0

I have the predecessor to the D80, the D70s.  As I have invested in the Nikon family for 30 years, it was great to get a DSLR that all my film lenses would fit.  The only downside to the Nikon DSLR's is they have stuck with the APS-sized sensor, so your film lenses get mulitplied by 1.5, rendering my 17-35MM super wide zoom kinda useless.  The telephoto zooms, however are great.  Putting my 80-200MM F2.8 lens on the D70s is really cool.

Still, I wish Nikon would follow Canon with a full frame (24X36MM) DSLR.  Barring that, I gues I'll have to bite the bullet and buy a 12-24MM wide zoom optimised for the digital sensor.

    2007-02-01 12:16:56.0

I will have to check to see what wide lense I have - it however I know is not a Nikon.  I will also have to see what happens when I shoot with it from the digital camera.

Dekrazee - please use the term any time works with many firsts - as at  Momsville us ladies ahave found what type we are  i am many a whore;)

    2007-02-01 18:20:19.0

    HAHAHAHAHA

    *starts thinking*

    wonder what I am....

    2007-02-01 18:35:53.0

You have to start thinking about your obsessions and go from there.......ummmmm

    2007-02-01 18:38:29.0

A film lens should work fine on a DSLR as the coverage of the film frame is greater than the smaller digital sensor.  There may be some other artifacts and abberations but generally you should be fine.  Going the other way, with a dedicated DSLR lens, like the 12-24MM super wides, may have problems as these are optmised for a small sensor and may not fill the entire frame.  Fortunately, most folks have invested in the film stuff first, and can then use their lenses on the DSLR.

I do want to invest in the 12-24MM wide and the 18-200MM all-in-on zoom optmised for the DSLR at some point, but my film lenses work fine for now.

    2007-02-01 21:10:30.0

I'm on the Canon side, and I bought a Canon 10-22 for my 350D. Such a good lens! At 10mm it gives you a whole new approach to photography (samples here ).

    2007-03-25 21:14:48.0

    and here on Flickr.

    2007-03-25 21:17:35.0

Yeah, the 10-22MM is great lens.  I have the 35MM film equivalent, a 17-35MM Sigma zoom.  I need to get one for the 1.5:1 frame size as I rarely shoot film anymore and it's kinda useless on my D70s.  I love wide angle lenses and use a 35MM (again, on full frame) as my normal lens.

I have two Voightlander Bessa bodies that have a 35MM f1.7 and a 25MM f4 mounted on them.  With the 25MM, you don't need to focus, just set it at the hyperfocal distance and shoot away.  They're great for street photography.  I can't wait for a digital equivalent.

    2007-03-25 23:29:50.0

    ha ha I have a
Voigtländer Bessamatic with a Voigtländer Color - Skopar X 50mm

Those are cool.  I have an older one from the 1960's I bought in London at Jessop's classics.  I also have one of these:

    :)

    2007-03-25 23:38:54.0

The lens cost more than the body.  Fortunately, as most folks are going digital, I picked this one up on Ebay for the cost of the lens alone.

    2007-03-25 23:39:05.0

Does the meter still work?  Most of the selenium cell meters have died.

    2007-03-25 23:40:04.0

Yep all good. The flash doesn't work, that's all.

    2007-03-25 23:40:42.0

I would love to have a try to one of your bessa, if you want to swap camera for the time of a roll or two...;)

    2007-03-25 23:42:03.0

That's pretty nice.  Have you ever dabbled in Medium Format?  I have a Kiev, a 6x6 SLR with a bunch of lenses I bought on ebay.  The big negative is stunning.

    2007-03-25 23:42:21.0

I'll need to bring it from my house in California.  I've only a digtial and Nikon N65 here.

    2007-03-25 23:43:05.0

No I never tried medium format, too expensive for me (I thought), but I realy like it too.

    2007-03-25 23:43:05.0

how much do you reckon it should cost me to buy a decent medium format cam on ebay?

    2007-03-25 23:43:55.0

I'll post a sunset from Noosa heads I did about 5 years ago when I get a chance.  The Kievs are cheap (and nasty) but I could never afford a Hassy or similar, so I've got about $ US 1,000 into it for a body and 4 lenses.  Most of the Ebay ones that are cheap don;t work properly, but there's a place in US called Kievusa that will fix them and update them so they're useable.

    2007-03-25 23:45:48.0

hum... If I had US$1000 I'm afraid I'll go for DSLR Canon 30D instead of a second hand medium format cam;)

    2007-03-25 23:46:47.0

I had the chance to play with an original Lomo Cam, was quite fun.

I just realised that if you type "lomocam" in google, my website comes up first! lol (try here )

    2007-03-25 23:48:04.0

Yeah, that's a better investment these days.  I bought it in 2001, when there were no quailty digital cameras that were affordable.  I think the first Nikon D1 cost US 5,600

    2007-03-25 23:48:12.0

    2007-03-25 23:49:39.0

That's what the Kiev looks like.  Weighs something like 5KG with lens.  You need a big neck to lug it around.

    2007-03-25 23:50:28.0

    hu hu big one!

    2007-03-25 23:50:44.0

I used to work for an online stock sport photographies company ("WSI: World Sports Images" based in Sydney actually) and one of the guy they were working with shot skate boarding pictures with a Hassel..

    2007-03-25 23:52:51.0

    2007-03-25 23:52:59.0

It's a beast.  I guess with the 12M sensors these days digital probably has better resolution than 6x6 negatives, but it's fun to shoot the "old" way.  I shot 6 rolls of C-41 proc Black and white last winter at the Zig-Zag railway in the blue mountains.  I love B&W, and in winter with muted colours it's more fun.

    2007-03-25 23:53:40.0

B&W is so much better in 35mm than DSLR...

    2007-03-25 23:54:13.0

Here's one of my BW images from the Zig-Zag railway.

    2007-03-26 00:04:44.0

    ha ha looks authenticaly old:)

    2007-03-26 00:07:18.0

I wont mind to give a try to this:

    2007-03-26 00:08:34.0

Now , if it were Sepia and printed on distressed paper...  I should do that in Photoshop, and put a crack or something so it looks like a glass plate neg.

    2007-03-26 00:09:04.0

When you get one, let me know.  After you add GST and generally uncompetitive pricing here in Australia, you could buy a nice new car for what it would cost.

    2007-03-26 00:10:40.0

    probably yepXP

    2007-03-26 00:11:33.0

    It is cool though.

    2007-03-26 00:12:16.0

I'm looking at a Canon TX-1 for my next camera:

I've seen reviews that suggest that it will function fine as a 7MP still camera as well as a moderate quality video camera.

    2007-03-26 08:31:55.0

I think that's the trend for point and shoot camera. No more difference between photographic camera and video camera. I used to have a Canon Digilal Ixus 400 and an Ixus 40 and an Ixus 30 and they were all very good with video (640x480 30fps).

    2007-03-26 16:29:32.0

it has quite a nice lens:

    • 39-390mm (35mm equiv)

    • F3.5-5.6

    • 10x optical zoom
