Need some gadget advice! I'm looking at buying a smartphone to organise my life.... I have done some research and the Dopod 838 Pro and imate JasJam are identical hardware, but different software.... 3 has released the Dopod, and Telstra has released the JasJam.
I've been a Telstra customer for a long time, mainly due to wanting good coverage (I go regional and international fairly frequently), however everything I read about the JasJam in user reviews is that there's many more software related issues with them, and far fewer with the Dopod.
The only difference I have found between the Dopod 838 Pro and the 810 is that the 838 has the qwerty keyboard and the 801 doesn't, and you have to rely on the stylus / onscreen keyboard with the 810, though you get a smaller device....
Do any of you have any of these phones, or know anyone who owns one? I'd like to get a review from the horse's mouth so to speak, to make sure I'm not entering a minefield if I buy the JasJam, or whether the keyboard of the 838p really makes it that much more worthwhile than an 810...
Thanks for your help!
Jason

I have an Imate Kjam, and it has a QWERTY keyboard, and a Dell PDA that doesn't. If your primary use case is email, get the one with the real keyboard. Using the stylus is very slow, and not very easy, at least for me. I think the jas-jam is a bit bigger than the kjam. I've had no problems with it, although the web browser is not perfect.
I for one couldn't live without the keyboard. A friend just bought a Blackberry Pearl and its a very sexy device. But the keyboard is still predictive.
Ok, I ordered a JasJam yesterday. Will be here on thursday
Hopefully it isn't all buggy! Can anyone recommend useful 3rd party apps for use with it? (freeware?)
actually i found mostly the built in stuff to be good enough.
Microsoft Voice Command is pretty cool though, especially in the car. It means I can talk to my car.. always wanted to do that.
I'm looking for a texas holdem poker if anybody finds a good one.
One Note 2007 has a great mobile version which syns in with the desktop one.
New beta release Skype client is pretty good.
Yeah, I agree... still isn't quite practical, but it's getting there.
It through away my first contact in my address book. Thought it was a display bug on the kjam, but it deleted it from the server. Weird. I had to add that person again.
I have had a Jasjam from Telstra for about 6 months now and have found it to be a very good device. Coming from an XDA2 I was not sure about the slide out keyboard but I have become a complete junky and type most of my SMS and emails via it. The stylus only comes out for navigation.
The new quad band UMTS phones are definately the way to go. If you do choose to use it for data you will find that it is VERY VERY Fast!!! Speeds of 1.5Mbps on the Jasjam are easily achieved. Unfortunately I think it is actually restricted at the hardware level to 1.8Mbps max. but I have not been able to confirm this.

1.5Mbps restricted to 1.8Mbps?
That's impressive hardware.![]()
I think 1.5mbps is just fine!![]()
I'm still on a kjam which is at gprs speeds (modem)
