Thought it might be good to tell some stories of good stuff you've done.

I'm sure we've all built lots of websites ..This is one I built for a microfinance group in Tanzania.

I donated an old laptop to a school, but maybe most schools have gear now.

I showed my landlords office how to put statements in PDF format (about 5 clicks) and they saved $1,000 on postage and more on trees.

I set up the office computers to print two pages per page to save paper too.

I've spent some time out in food buses, handing out bread, hotdogs and coffee to people in commission buildings and halfway houses.

Helped a local intermediate age school (10-12 yr olds and their teachers) experiment with social networking tools. Many of the kids adopt the stuff naturally, its the teachers who need the most assistance, and most schools are woefully under-resourced as far as IT support/training goes

We sponsor the China Dreamblogue and donate all ad monies to the Library Project which builds libraries in orphanages and rural communities in Asia.

We have a digital internship team that assists us and we do SEM projects for NGOs and Non-profits at no cost. We fund our team by doing SEM work for companies and individuals looking to do business in China...

    What is the China Dreamblogue?

    2008-01-09 03:21:05.0

Geeks offering their services to NGOs is exactly what I was talking about in the other topic.

It's hard to use a computer efficiently and effectively without help. Usually we (non-geeks) just need someone to show us the ropes

The http://blogofdreams.com chronicles my journey across China to all 22 provinces this year...We also feature charities...

We could use some geek help in creating a map and some interactive interface...We are SEM types and educator geeks, not programmers...:-)

Hi everyone. For those who don't listen to the Father Bob Show podcast, I am the producer. I am team leader for IT at the Fr Bob Maguire Foundation. All on a volunteer basis. I spend about 2 days a week on this.

I also tutor one of Bob's lifelong clients in computer skills and helping him sell on ebay. Bob slings me a few bucks for this to help cover petrol and other costs.

Hope to meet most of you on Jan 27th.

Awww... it's in Melbourne. (I'm in Syd)

Would love to hear the outcome of the meeting though!

Cam and I intend to podcast the audio from the meeting. He will probably pop it in the G'day world feed. You might not hear everyone talking, but hopefully enough to get the gist

Do you listen to the Father Bob Show or Sunday Night Safran?

    2008-01-09 18:50:46.0

    No, i'm afraid i don't

    2008-01-09 18:52:19.0

Don't want to turn this into a plug, but if you look below the Geeks Who Care post on the website I sent you that is Bob's show. We talk lots about what he is doing to help people out, and what we as just people can do. We all got a little frustrated by the limitations of the format in getting stuff actually done, so Cam started this group. It can be physical as well as online

    2008-01-09 18:54:12.0

Don't worry abt plugging a good cause:)

Yeah, I can see how a format change would be needed

    2008-01-09 19:08:59.0

Michaela, I'm a fan of Sunday Night Safran:) Anyway ... unfortunately I have to admit I do nothing for good with my geek skills. I do the  donation thing, Red Cross and AustCare ... but as far as the geek side goes, nothing (yet). Honestly, I haven't really thought about it. It's not quite geek in the computer sense, but one thing I would like to do is set up a free music centre to help young people record demos or if they want to sing then I can help put music to tracks and record them. That's quite ambitious though - and I'm not sure I could handle it on my own

Just found this forum - has it moved entirely to Facebook now?

I've helped get Appropedia.org established - that's the sustainability wiki, also dealing with solutions to poverty, appropriate technology, and ICT4D. Still working hard on it, and excited about it.
