one of the ideas that came out of our first Geeks Who Care meeting (see notes here) was to explore setting up mesh networks and providing re-furbished PC's to kids living in public housing communities around Melbourne. Anyone out there got much hands-on experience building out mesh networks?
I'm working on one here in Canberra: http://www.freecanberrawireless.net
And Matt is working on one in Sydney: http://www.freesydneywireless.com
oh very nice Nat. Interested in helping us out?
Sure! I'm no hardware technician or network engineer ... but I'll help where I can! I haven't listened to the GWC podcast or read the notes just yet; was downloading yesterday but if I'd waited for it I'd have missed my bus![]()
I'd be more than happy to give Nathanael a hand. We're the two Meraki networks we know of in Canberra. I'm sure we can at the very least give advice from afar...
Well hopefully 3, if Andrew set-up the two he won at web-blast last month!![]()
An interesting article on free wifi for the poor - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/22/us/22wireless.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&ei=5088&en=573f6f85da176b70&ex=1363924800&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
That's a bummer...
No mention of Merakis. Would those help?
Come to Wireless World 2008 next Wednesday/Thursday in Darling Harbour - contact me for free exhibition ticket ... myself, JJ, Matt and Ajay will be manning the stall (what's the gender inspecific for "manning"?)
Obviously the reason I'm plugging the exhibition is for anyone to find out about mesh networks. Mark Pesce will be giving a preso for us. Gonna be totally awesome.
Personing?
Hey Nate, will drop you a msg abt the tickets
Damn! Just saw this message. Not that I would have made it to Sydney anyway. Was driving to Brisbane.
have a look at the wireless repeaters that the OLPC guys are doing.... awesome, and very cheap.
