Somebody from the UK explain this
Do any other countries pay for tv?
Morgan, there was a time in Australia when you had to have a 'Listeners License' for radio and when tv came along then your tv license covered radio as well.
Inspectors would come along and knock on your door and ask to see your license and there was a fine if you didn't have one. Even if the only receiver you owned was a car radio, you had to have a license. This (like the UK one) was to pay for the ABC..
The Whitlam Labor Government abolished all license fees in 1974 and now the ABC is funded by government grants.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
Everyone must be aware that a major step in scientific discovery is about to take place on the French/Swiss border...
The switching on of the Large Hadron Collider will take place at 5.00pm Australian Eastern Standard Time, today 10-9-08....
This experiment will accelerate, and then collide particles at near light speed, and "We will be looking at what the Universe was made of, billionths of a second after the Big Bang."
There are some good pics of the machine here..
Some clowns have suggested that this experiment may create a black hole which will swallow the world, but scientists claim that even if it does create a black hole, then it will only be tiny and only last for less than a second.
Anyway, don't forget to watch for the end of the world at 5.00pm today! ![]()
Goodbye cruel world..
