  • Horrific hard drive sounds

My laptop was doing the same... once the fan had gone up in speed it never came down, and the only step up it had was from normal to REALLY LOUD. So it'd be going along fine, then get a little hot and switch into ultra-loud mode, then stay loud forever.

Also, any pressure on the centre of the bottom of the case (including its own weight) would make it produce this horrible rattling sound, like something was stuck in the fan.

So I sent emails to Dell and they sent someone out to fix it. Good ol' extended warranty... got practically a whole new laptop out of that by the time all the parts were replaced - new mobo, new fan and heat sensor, new power connector, new casing (including the mouse buttons) couple of screws that had come loose replaced, couple of rubber feet (where they'd come loose from the bottom) stuck on... 'twas good.

6.5 thousand million is accurate isn't it... 1 thousand million = 1 billion, population of the world is 6.5 billion (or thereabouts)

  • Anyone here good at maths-ing?

Last Q on a piece of homework is a decidedly evil differentiation question.

Normal differentiation I can do fine, where y = something in x, find dy/dx etc.

This one, I have x = something in y but still need to find dy/dx, and the normal to the curve at y = 0

Anyone know how it works when x and y are swapped in the question but not in the dy/dx bit, or whether I can just ignore that and do it the same as normal, or what the heck is going on...

and I guess I deserved the ninja-ing, what with leaving the topic open in General... and my frequent ninja-ing of others

  • More 'what the...' pics

That'd be a parked ad page covered in key words to try and get search engine traffic.

    You're point is? :P

The problem with trying to maintain growth indefinitely is that there's only a finite amount of resources on the planet, and exponential growth (even at a small rate it'll compound itself quickly) will use increasingly more resources as time goes on.

It works ok when we're well within the amount of available resources, but we're kinda pushing it now... seems likely that to keep continuous growth going in some parts of the world will require equal and opposite depletion of resources (and hence reduced wealth/growth) in other parts of the world.

There was a thing in New Scientist just recently about it... had articles from some people suggesting a near-zero growth economy. The only growth being what comes from more efficient use of what we already have. It would need a lot of R&D in renewable energy and recycling of everything, and they suggested moving taxation to the end of the system where resources are extracted from the environment instead of the point of sale (to pay for the costs of replacing said resources)

Was interesting... not sure if it's workable though.

Topic started by the "why we travel" broken-record-like one, first and only post is someone else, who then refers to the broken-record one by name... the bots are talking to each other now?

Note to self: create website specifically for discussions between web-bots. Artificial Intelligence will eventually evolve, and sell something to all the other bots...
