It's the whole "there was no year zero" thing. Not that the lack of such a year was even made as an "official" decision until who knows how many hundred years after the event. Then there's the question of whether the supposed starting point was anywhere near year 1 in the first place (if we're supposed to be counting years since the birth of Jeebus then surely Christmas should be the start of the new year... I know it's close, but it's only even in winter so they could avoid persecution by pretending they were celebrating some other pagan holiday, and then later absorb that holiday into their own as they converted people).
In short, numbering years is silly, and only useful as a way to keep track of which year happened when, relative to the other years. All this fuss over numerical milestones... if the human species had evolved with a different number of fingers we wouldn't even be counting in the same base, and it could have been year 3732 right now (taking 8 as a plausible other number of fingers).
