Drum brakes or disc? Changing shoes on drums is a hassle. Fortunately I only have two cars with drums now, rest are disc.

Agree but Land Rover drums are not too bad to work with.
Yeah, I have a set of special tools for the reatining springs and an adjustment spoon. The self-adjusters on my 1963 chevy don't work, so I have to adjust them manually. Fortunately my Dad taught me how to do this properly. Doubt most folks have ever had to manually adjust drum brakes anymore.
Land Rover brakes are manual adjust.
There is some comfort with manual adjusters in knowing they have been adjusted when you adjust them and not relying on self adjusters to do the adjusting for you.
Yeah, that's true. Sometimes when the adjusters do work they don't adjust evenly and the car pulls to the right or left when stopping. That's always exciting if your're stopping from 100KM/H or so. Doing the 'Tenessee waltz' is not fun in traffic.
Tenessee waltz. Ha. I like that, and have performed one once at 100km/h when only 3 (I suspect) of the 4 drums locked. It was the rear right that failed. A real brown trouser moment.
Yeah. My daily driver was a 1963 Chevy Nova (pics on Tangler/cars/classics) for many years, and I got quite used to poor braking performance. I never tailgate, even in modern cars, as I learned to drive in this car. When I'm back in california next month I'm gonna drive it down to southern cal for a few days as I needs a run. It's all original ex paint colour and I've owned it since 1978, so that's 29 years. Would love to find a clean EH over here to go with it, as they're kinda the same thing. Actally, I've always wondered if the fuel injection on the last iteration of Holden's red motor would fit an american 6. An interesting proposition.....

Nice EH's are hard to find now. Although a tad older, you might have more luck searching out an EJ. Personally I think the HR was the pick of them.

Not sure what they are trying to demonstrate here but my experience with the HR's 161 and 186 red motors are that you would want to let it cool down for a good half hour before attempting this manouvre ...
Same with my 194 in the nova!

You can see the family resemblance in the Holden and the Chevrolet. Both GM products from the same era. I've always wanted one of the South African Novas that were built RHD, the only place where that was done so they're quite rare. I'd have to keep it in Australia, though as I'd kill myself with an RHD car in the US, having driven so much over here.
Now that it is the end of Weds I think it is offically acceptable to start looking towards the weekend againg, so what are peoples plans for this coming weekend?

I never understand this either or compulsion.... life is a matter of "give and take" and "both.... and" but surely not either or when it comes to cars and kids (although one might have to put up without the sportscar and perhaps suffer the indignity of a "bus" - that's van - for a few years... they eventually grow up and back comes the CAR..... ahhhh life is wonderful.
You seeee.... you said it! It is either or..... first you need to give up the flashy, inconvenient car for the kids, then, when they grow up and you go get a nicer car, they'll just keep taking it off your hands
Eventually they move to the other side of the continent... then you only lose your wheels when they fly home for a visit... well worth the trade-off...
If I do have kids, I'm gonna run a tight ship, the way my dad did - tap shoes together before getting into car, no eating in car etc etc

thats so funny you bring that up about kids, my bf and I were talking about how strict we would be if we had kids haha we were more talking about how they wouldn't have mobiles and computers at 10..it's scary how young kids are getting phones and pc's geez I was 16 before I got my first mobile after working for 6mnths lol

Needless to say the table needs a sand/polish/re-cloth but it is playable.
I intend to have a few games on it "as-is" to gain a "home ground advantage" then invite a few mugs over to play for drinks before any refurbishment begins.

He hasn't told us the fuel bill yet, or the possible ticket for an unsafe load. If the fuse blows again he might get another ticket for no light. He could even crash and his insurance company refuse to pay for the damage caused by a pool table smashing into someone's property... He could end up losing his house and his familiy might desert him, just for some 99 cent pool table off ebay.
I'm still game for a game
- about 160km trip at 25 mpg with fuel at around $1.15/L. Ha. (refer metric topic);
- Trailer is an 8' x 5' cage to fit a 7' x 3'6" table. No problem;
- Fuse should be OK. Trailer connection replaced and re-wired. Auto-Electrics is a Dark Science. Satan was (is) an autoelectrician;
- I only crash expensive flimsy cars like Impreza's;
- Insurance is for the faint hearted.

They are rare as rocking horse shit here Arthur. Would love one though. I have managed to get hold of an 88 Series 3 (1972). Goes well apart fron the trailer plug (now fixed). I am about to bid my 2004 Forester Farewell.
I wish I needed such a vehicle. Up till about a year ago I had a Scooby but using it for work related travel made my old bones ache a bit so I now drive a "dad racer" SAAB95 Aero which is no more economical, not so much fun but is nice and comfortable. I have toyed with the idea of a project 4x4 and did have a chance of a Radio Bodied 101 a couple of years ago (I used to use them in the RAF) bit they are 24volt so I was put off. It had a nice Rover 3.5 petrol and when took it for a short drive the brakes were as I remembered them - full on or off...
Something like 75% of all Landrovers ever produced since 1948 are still being used on a daily basis.
Yeah, I've heard they tend to stand on their nose when unladen and under heavy braking in the 50 mph region. I have no use for one but to scare the shit out of other road users. The series 3 does that nicely though. With respect to the spleen, I've sacrificed some ride height for comfort for want of a better word and removed two leafs from the rear springs and one from the fronts. There is a bit more body sway when cornering in top gear at around 20mph. It is also one of the rare ones here that has not had the Holden Red motor transplant. I am impressed with the 2.25 petrol 4 pot. It also has the standard Land Rover self lubricating underbody.

Oh man those shows drive me nuts!! I really can't stand watching them especially Deal or No Deal because there is no skill in it, either you are lucky or your not. It is so over hyped in the U.S., but it is always sad when they are up $100,000 and then lose it all.

@Ruskie. Other than NOW! give me another reason for me to spend a shed load of money on air-fare to go somewhere that is running out of water, potentially quite cold at this time of year and has places called Ipswich and Wivenhoe when I can go to the "originals" in less than 30 minutes drive.
I was just there a couple of weeks ago on North Stradi Island and I loved the warmth! I was very said driving back south to Sydney in the rain..

Arthur - so I can shower for longer than 4 minutes. It takes that long alone to get the hot/cold mixture right with these new restrictive shower roses. Note also there is another water storage a little upstream from Wivenhoe called Somerset. As far as "originals" go, the best I can offer is Woolloongabba.
Kaz - Nth Stradbroke Island is a great place. Some trivia ... North and South Straddie were formed when a boat load of rum ran aground and exploded, creating two islands and the Jumpinpin bar.
Ruskie. I wouldn't consider the Gabba as being in an inhospitable place that costs too much to get too. If there is no water, there is always the beer they serve in the ground. If the right teams are playing (is there any at this time of year?) then I would seriously consider. However Mrs practical bloody Dent would point out that I can't fund a trip or afford any more time off. I on the other hand would do my best to ignore her and say I'm away on business for a week or so.

@Ruskie. I remember seeing something on the TV about pool tables. "The Old Yankee Workshop" some guy called Norm does woodworking projects and he was building a pool table, mainly with MDF. The playing base was made from 3/4" MDF with a supporting lattice of "well seasoned oak" underneath. I think they were something like 1"x 3" and the idea of the lattice was to prevent it warping while retaining a "bounce akin to that found with Italian slate"...

Lollapalooza kicked my ass this weekend. Exhausted at work.
Most of it was good. Yesterday was dreadfully hot and humid. Best sets by Ben Harper, Black Keys, Spoon, The Roots, The Hold Steady, My Morning Jacket. Pearl Jam was good but the sound was off.
Could skip for the rest of my life: Regina Spektor, !!!, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sound Tribe Sector 9. TV ON The Radio was so so.
Still so Jealous of you deadline, just to beable to see Pearl Jam live! oh and Ben Harper rocks my world.
And Eddie came out and did Master of War with BH and the innocent criminals. It was actually better (sound quality wise) than PJ's set.

My to-do list mainly consists of relaxing with the girls (and the one boy dog). It's too hot for the st bernard to stay outside, and it is too hot for anyone to be outside in my opinion, so the four dogs and I will probably watch movies, and do other things. Big house, and four dogs, we play hide and seek sometimes, and things of that nature.
That sounds like fun! How can a St. Bernard "hide"?
She could hide, big house, lots of places to hide, but usually I will hide and they will try to find me. The little ones are great at it sometimes, and bad at it other times, but the Sadie (St Bernard) always manages to find me in the end

The song is based on a true incident...Bod Geldorf wrote it for the Boom Town Rats after reading about a 16 year old girl that shot and killed a few adults (including a police officer) and a bunch of kids in a school playground across the street from her home... she showed no remorse when she was captured and when asked why she did it simply said "I don't like Mondays"
I forgot the reference to the telex machine in the song... that was part of the 'neatness' (if thats the right word) of the song... Geldorf supposedly read the new release on a telex machine (the incident was in San Diego California)

correction: I just went back and re-read the reports.... she killed two adults(including the school principle who stood between her and the kids) and injured 8 kids and the police officer - the gun had been a gift from her father. It happened in 1979 and the song was first sung at the Fox Theater in San Diego. It reached #1 on the UK charts but wasn't played by any stations in the SD area in respect to the local sensitivities about the event.
When I saw Geldorf in the video I thought "Wow, I hardly remember him being this young".... I guess it shows which side of the age divide each of is on.

In 2005 (at her third unsuccessful parole hearing) she insisted she had been beaten and sexually abused by him (she had not claimed this at any time before, rather she had claimed at her first hearing that she hadn't shot any of the kids, rather that they must have been shot by the police and further that she was both under the influence of alcohol and on hallucinogens and the reason they hadn't been brought up as a defense was due to a conspiracy between the prosecutors and her own defense lawyer to fabricate test evidence to show she was drug free).

This one one of the first major ones I think... but we had one in Canada in 1975 In Ottawa when a 18 year old student killed one and wounded five at a high school before turning the gun on himself (he had earlier raped and stabbed a 17 year old 'friend' to death)
I think we get a bigger build up in todays sensationalist reporting environment, but unfortunately they did happen a generation ago...

Re Geldorf: he was a reporter (music) here in Vancouver for the "Georgia Straight" (an anti-establishment alternative newspaper) before returning to Ireland and his music career with the Boom Town Rats - I think he established a reputation even then as being more thansomewhat opinionated...and loud.
Re: "it doesn't make anymore sense" - right. The simple fact is she had no reason to do it, and still shows no remorse. She's just trying to find some words that will get the parole board to let her out of her life sentence.

Re: "concept of Evil" Sometimes labels are all we have.... since there is simply no way to make sense of something as vile as this, to describe it we are left with the poor substitute of labeling it. I think this is one of those cases.

I want to respond to that: "Evil. At its simplest, most raw form." But can't quite find the words. - I feel personally uncomfortable with the overuse of the word "EVIL".
In general: Geldof is a decent straight talking kind of guy. But he takes it to the personal level too, even unto the "Do you FUCKING know who I am?" routine, as if it will always get him what he feels is needed, as if it can always be provided.
He thinks (or at least used to) that the death of Western Soldiers is a reasonable price to pay.
Trading one death for another is not a reasonable price in my opinion.
This is the man who announced that certain bands/concert acts would be playing his AID gigs before even asking them. When they called him and said "Oi! what this about?" He would invariably say "OK I'll tell the world you refused to help starving Africans..." or whatever.
I think it's pretty apt that "I don't like Mondays" came from his head. I think he understands the mentality.

I'm entertaining my parents this weekend so my to-do list is pretty much "don't argue with mum". I wonder if I could persuade dad to do a barbecue in our yard if I bought one of those one-use bbqs ... hmmm *goes to check the weather forecast*

Its basically a foil tray full of charcoal with a wire grate over the top, useful for BBQs on beaches or in parks

My one experience with one was unfortunately an unmitigated disaster.... not entirely the fault of the apparatus...but we graduated to a cast iron Hibachi that wasn't as portable, but did a wonderful job of cooking.

I don't like gas bbqs.... takes the fun out of making fire
You can adjust the height of the grill (that rack thingy on the back) and the flow of oxygen to the charcoal with the two control vents (sliding) on the front...
Gas bbq are simple to use, you get better control over temperature and heat convection.... but somehow I still like the old charcoal
(Before anyone yells..... yes I know this is really grilling and not BBQ at all... but I'm tired of fighting the world on this one... I use the correct terms when I'm in a devoted BBQ audience)...

i was cofounder of the southern derby cup back in 2000; then our club went bankrupt. The derby matches lived on and we got a new USL franchise, Carolina Railhawks, and got back into the competition. Well, the lads won it back and tonight, I get to present the cup to our local fan club.

I've had a great start to the weekend - with first going for WOMAD on Friday and I had an awesome small BBQ with real charcoal and wood to roast the best and sweetest corn ever!!!
