Found this really cute site - Rules of Thumb.

So if you find yourself at an expensive restaurant and have no idea what to order, what do you do?

If a rich person you want to impress is treating you to a fancy restaurant meal and you don't understand the fancy menu: order the second most expensive dish. It will be good and your host will be impressed with your decisiveness.

(Darn... all this while I've been going for the cheaper items... I feel bad making someone pay too much!)

I like this one: To get the most out of your car, treat it like a favorite cat or dog.

(Side note - I once had an accident, and had to get the car repaired. When I got it back, I hugged the steering wheel and apologised to it, promising to never do it again. Me thinks I'm on the right track for this Rule of Thumb!)
