talking of funny named foods - i was shopping at Aldi many moons ago and couldn't stop laughing at a chocolate bar they were selling - it was exactly the same as a "bounty" (for all those non-aussies it is a coconutty centre with chocolate surround - like a mars bar but coconut instead of nougat, if mars bars are the same elsewhere as they are here). And the name of the imitation chocolate bar ? .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .  "Mutiny".

Bit of nerd joke that i spose only aussies would get.

    2008-07-11 00:28:26.0

i'm american. i've had bounty bars and i get the joke.Laughing

    2008-07-11 00:30:56.0

i haven't travelled extensively so not too sure how much of our culture has spread elsewhere. Although there was that movie with Mel Gibson in it about the Mutiny on the Bounty. Did you here about the disgusting practices that the decendants of those 'mutineers' practice on Pitcairn island? Although i should refrain from making too much of a comment because my knowledge on the subject is sketchy at best.

    2008-07-11 00:48:50.0

There's a shop near here called Knobs and Knockers.

    They sell door furniture...

    2008-07-11 07:20:10.0

LOL!  I like the Mutiny name!

Knobs and knocker equally as funny! hahahah

    2008-07-11 07:26:05.0

    yeah...I like the knockers too

    2008-07-11 16:07:52.0

" i haven't travelled extensively so not too sure how much of our culture has spread elsewhere."

Simon  BTW - Bounty Bars, like much of Australian "culture" did not originate in Australia - neither of course, did the "Bounty" herself!

    2008-07-12 00:17:58.0

Nor of course did Mars Bars etc. the Mars Family is American

And how come that page doesn't have any "Cheezy Poofs"???

    2008-07-12 00:18:42.0

Heller can be quite cheesey, on occaisions.  I wouldn't call him a poof tough...

It's quarter to eight on a Sunday night.  England have had a shit day bowling against South Africa (even though they made the Proteas follow-on last night) and I have a day off tomorrow.  So I'm well into my second bottle of Shiraz Mataro (an Aussie wine from the Banrock Station slop-yard) it's not too bad, better than most French crap and goes very nice with, well, itself...

Don't you have to have some culture in the first place...Laughing

Kultchaa? I've got cultsha - it's around here somewhere (patting my pockets).

Soclearlee - i know enough about australian history to know that the only true australian culture at the time of the Bounty was about 40,000 years old. We all know where the convicts came from. I lump the story of the Bounty into Australian culture/history due to the fact that the guy who got the arse from that expedition ended up as governor here in NSW for a short stint before another rebellion. Because of his role in it we get the background story of the "Mutiny". I couldn't imagine many places outside australia knowing about (or showing interest) in the Bounty as i'm sure there were plenty of mutinees in that period.

And yes, i do know that the majority of our chocolate bars are "imports" - maybe changed a little bit to suit the tastes and climate of the population. Although i would laugh out loud if someone told me the Tim Tam was a Kiwi invention (it would be true to form, like so many success stories from NZ being claimed by Aussies).

    2008-07-13 20:26:15.0

    so there!Tongue out

    2008-07-13 20:40:49.0

actually the bounty mutiny is probably the one that people do know. besides several movies (i've seen at least 2 of them), there were several books as well.

    .mutiny on the bounty

(scroll down to literature and cinema)

    2008-07-13 20:51:44.0

i spose old Mel helped spread the story for that one. I remember watching that movie with a bunch of friends when we were in late primary school - my mate's family were what you could call "religious" and there was a quick turning off of the tv when the Tahitian women came on the scene. Talk about how to get an almost teenagers interest up about half naked women. Although another one of my mates mum would not be so drastic about it - she just held a tea towel up in front of the screen until the offending parts were over! That's pretty funny when you are seventeen!

    2008-07-13 21:06:47.0

this story was famous wayyyyy before mel gibson. the 1935 version was the first remake (of the 1932 version) to win a best picture oscar award.

    2008-07-13 21:12:53.0

i would think it more embarrassing to have your friends mom in the room while watching naked boobies.

    2008-07-13 21:13:20.0

Heh... all this while I thought it was funny that the counter to 'Bounty' was 'Mutiny'

    oops...

I've heard of Poo curry power, Pschitt lemonade and Krapp toilet paper XP

I also remember seeing an advert for a perfume called Cinema, which isn't so funny, but is a bit odd - who wants to smell like a cinema?

    2008-07-16 06:53:06.0

slightly better than smelling like a pub I'm guessing...

    2008-07-16 07:05:47.0

and at £50 for a miniscule bottle...  I bought some of that for Mrs Dent.  She actually likes it.  Smells like scent to me.

    2008-07-16 07:26:18.0

But not like something that cost £50 for what amounts to a dribble of some exotic piss in a bottle.

    2008-07-16 07:27:30.0

Is it possible for something to not smell like a scent?

Scent being another word for smell :P

ummmmmm...British boat. British History.  And still having trouble finding Australian culture 200 years later but I think I now know why! :=)

    2008-07-17 02:05:55.0

For the English speaking world there is always some fun to be found in brand names.  For example in Australia you can get get a snack-in-a-bag called Tasty Jacks.  Personally I couldn't bring myself to eat a jack, even if it is tasty.

Then there is other stuff which you can make daft associations with.  Grouse Whisky.  Who ever thought of making whisky from a grouse?

    2008-07-17 02:25:49.0

ummmmmm...British boat. British History.  And still having trouble finding Australian culture 200 years later but I think I now know why! :=)

Australian culture is definitely a part of this western worlds lives. You read our books, watch our t.v. shows, you watch our movies, you look at our art, we compete well at sport and have a good chance of beating you, you have us teaching you in schools, our scientists have made the world a better place, you use our inventions and you come here for a holiday or to live. Not bad considering it’s a pretty small population spread over a huge area and all in all has a homogenous culture over that whole area. Only reason our culture was slow to establish is that we had Britain as a base, the almost extermination of the culture already incumbent here at the time and the advent of global communications and ease of travel brought on by the industrial revolution. Our culture is a mix of the whole world with a base from Britain augmented by our unique location. Not too many other places that were a part of the ‘Empire’ have done so well – hell, a lot of places are a shit heap because of their involvement

    2008-07-17 18:39:47.0

ps the font is different cause i kept getting logged out - had to type up in word first.

    2008-07-17 18:41:00.0

And still having trouble finding Australian culture

Your problem there is you are actively seeking it. Forest for the trees. Maybe grab yourself a tub of yoghurt from the cold section in the supermarket and get your fill that way ...

    2008-07-17 19:17:07.0

    LOL!

    Ruski's definition of culture:

    2008-07-17 19:34:31.0

Talking about cheese.  I still crease myself over this one:-

I bought some Armageddon cheese the other day.  It said on the label, "Best before End"

    2008-07-18 02:25:02.0

    oh dear.

Also, i should probably apologise for the previous rant - what with almost being forced to watch a pope drive past and the always usual pain in the arse job i couldn't help but rant about culture. My usual response is "pfffh"

    Peace out.

    2008-07-18 04:39:07.0

hehehehe I been blaming the Pope for everything too this week....

    2008-07-18 17:58:26.0

Australian culture is definitely a part of this western worlds lives. You read our books, watch our t.v. shows, you watch our movies, you look at our art, we compete well at sport and have a good chance of beating you,

If you think the world is out there clamouring for our books, t.v. shows and movies, I'm betting you haven't seen too much of the world outside of Australia beyond perhaps a week or two in Bali or an after school "break in Europe"?  Spend a decade or two living overseas and you'll get a much more realistic view of the way the world sees us . You may also like to check your local library and note that most other places in the "Empire" which have not "done so well" actually had their own cultures to begin with  - and unlike our indigenous culture, they'd all discovered the wheel too!Laughing

At least that's what they taught us at school.

Australian culture simply does not rate in most other countries. Go check for yourself - there's a big world out there waiting to tell you that Waltzing Matilda was an Irish folk song and "Oggy Oggy Oggy , OI OI OI" was a UK miner's chant. Men At work and the song the Land down Under? - created by a scotsman - it goes on.Surprised

Once you see an interview with an Australian on an overseas, English speaking  t.v station where they actually subtitle the Australian speakers in English for the benefit of English speaking viewers...... gives you some perspective. What you will never learn in Australia is how the world see us from the outside.

    2008-07-18 22:53:51.0

So what if the culture originated from somewhere else?

What we have now is a hybrid and pretty unique.

What exactly is the point you're trying to make?

    2008-07-19 20:58:01.0

Yes. I am not sure where you are going with all this either.

Spend a decade or two living overseas and you'll get a much more realistic view of the way the world sees us

The fact that the rest of the world is compelled to look is ... odd ... but flattering.

unlike our indigenous culture, they'd all discovered the wheel too

The Australian Aboriginal people were minimalist and very good at it. No need for a wheel. Compare that with one of your fancy "overseas" places ... like Dubai. That place ... the capital of Unnecessary.

Waltzing Matilda was an Irish folk song

Yes. We need to update this to Paddy McGinty's Goat very soon or we'll fall behind fast.

    2008-07-20 00:45:25.0

    i'm american........we think aussie's are great.

we watch aussie movies as well as british or french ones.

we have so many products that use australians or australian culture for their advertising. that should say something about our love of australian culture.

maybe i couldn't tell you about australian history...............but i'm american....we don't know about the history of anyone but ourselves (maybe)Wink

    2008-07-20 00:50:18.0

Britain's reverse charge adverts come from Aus...

    2008-07-20 02:43:30.0

Despite my comment (about 8,000 posts above) about Aussie culture, I don't think it makes any difference.  If I was Australian I don't think I'd be too worried about how the rest of the world see's me.  There again, I'm British which means I don't give a shit what anyone else thinks because I know we are best (or something like that - LOL)

    2008-07-20 14:42:05.0

    I agree...to an uknown extent.

    2008-07-20 14:43:11.0

Geez – all this over the name of a chocolate bar. I would really like to go on with this debate because there are oh so many things that give me the shites about what Soclearlee has written – but quite frankly I think it brings down the tone of what this forum is about. Mate (I’m assuming you are male), it comes across that you have a chip on your shoulder. Leave it at home or at least eat it with some dipping sauce. I’ll refrain from the use of emoticons to try and put a positive spin on a condescending comment……..

    2008-07-20 16:48:10.0

I'm female, and still people call me mate. I think it can work both ways, no?

    2008-07-20 17:46:26.0

    very well said, simon.

    2008-07-20 18:37:51.0

    Oh my!

Imagine saying that name over the phone or something in an English speaking county!

    2008-07-20 18:58:30.0

I'm female, and still people call me mate. I think it can work both ways, no?

yeah - i do call female friends mate. Just the same as i would refer to a bunch of people (that included females) as "guys"  - "hey, do you guys want to head down to the pub?". But they are both masculine words - that are probably changing with use as time goes on.

    2008-07-20 18:58:57.0

    Yeah... good point

    2008-07-21 01:51:00.0

Ok then I'll fall for it.  Heller was saying something about how jealouse everyone was that he was the chosen one etc...  Let's put it this way, I don't think he was being serious.
