    2007-03-05 22:11:03.0

hahahha no, it says in the article (via the link I posted) that the next  moon eclipse will be on Aug 28, and we'll get to see it here

If it's not cloudy that is

I got to see the red moon eclipse!!!! Woo hoo!!!

    Maaaan, how cool was it?!

    2007-08-28 06:26:06.0

apparently the best place to see it was in darwin

    2007-08-28 06:36:31.0

It was cloudy over in my neck of the woods!!!!!!

Had to wait to watch it on the telly.

    2007-08-28 07:16:52.0

Looked pretty darned good from here:)

    2007-08-28 07:23:29.0

it was amazing from Coogee Beach!!! The red was awesome!!

    2007-08-28 17:26:03.0

    Yeah!

    That's twice this year eh?

    2007-08-28 20:15:41.0

    Interesting

    2007-08-28 20:15:45.0

This is what it looked like in Brisbane......

    2007-08-28 21:15:50.0

Nice picture andromeda!   I was such a cool color of red I wish I had my camera out in Coogee

    2007-08-28 21:17:39.0

I had mine.... but despite my neighbour's kids urging me to zoom in all the way and use flash, this is the best shot:

    2007-08-28 21:25:53.0

Yeah, 'twas a nice colour, but not as dark, blood red as the 1994 eclipse, which was darkened by the volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt Pinatubo. (in the Phillipines).

    2007-08-28 21:26:46.0

Yeah, you gotta use flash $deezee$. Surprised

                         Tongue out

    2007-08-28 21:30:57.0

hehehe yeah.... they were so excited - one even ran in to turn the light on (for the backyard where we were) so that we could get a good shot!

    Funny stuff

    2007-08-28 21:33:07.0

Cloudy as heck here in the west over Perth so no moon for us.

    Everyone say "awwwwww" Cry

    2007-08-28 23:07:59.0

    "awwwwwschidt"

    2007-08-28 23:46:39.0

So, anyone know why the moon went red?

    2007-08-29 00:14:54.0

What you're seeing is every sunrise and sunset on Earth--all at once. This ring of light shines into Earth's shadow, breaking the utter darkness you might expect to find when you look at the moon in eclipse

    2007-08-29 00:16:52.0

That's a very nice poetic way of saying it.

I'd have said it's just the sun's light lensing through the crap in the atmosphere on to the moon's surface.

    2007-08-29 00:19:18.0

Its also impacted by particulate matter in the earth's atmosphere... I think someone posted here (or in another topic) about volcanic ash or smoke (or pollution) in the atmosphere in the regions the sunlight is going through as its refracted towards the moon....

    2007-08-29 00:21:15.0

So it would have to do with the 'alignment' of stuff right?

Cos I distinctly remember seeing non-red eclipses till now

    2007-08-29 00:21:35.0

But even without the "crap" as you call it JR, it would be basically red at totallity...

    2007-08-29 00:21:52.0

Lots of clouds/storms at each side of the earth .... will make the whole thing dimmer and sharply reduce the intensity of the red  as well.

    2007-08-29 00:23:10.0

Volcanic eruptions tend to give the most vivid reds...

    2007-08-29 00:24:36.0

    ohhhhhh.....

    2007-08-29 00:24:56.0

Oh it would be red most of the time. The 'crap', as I put it, is usually naturally occurring 'crap', like volcanic gas, ash and dust. Or stuff thrown up by stormy weather and so on.

    2007-08-29 00:26:58.0

I'm sorry I missed this one ... I've seen so many (back in the day when I was active in the Astronomy community we used to set up telescopes for the public to view them..... and show them some other interesting sights in the time leading up to the event) that I didn't bother this time around - but I've heard from friends that this was the most vivid one they've ever seen... drat.

    2007-08-29 00:27:45.0

Did you see the one a few months ago?

    2007-08-29 00:28:44.0

    @Dek

So it would have to do with the 'alignment' of stuff right?

Yes. When the Earth gets "in the way" and light from the sun is bent through the atmosphere onto the moon.

    2007-08-29 00:28:59.0

@dek Ironically I set out to do so, but we got "rained out" from a couple hours before through the event here .... and it wasn't so great.  This time I go to bed way before my normal time and the eclipse at ~2:am our time is one of the best from our locale in decades!

    2007-08-29 00:29:32.0

Yes. When the Earth gets "in the way" and light from the sun is bent through the atmosphere onto the moon.

No no, I meant that about the sunlight getting thru to make it red, not the usual eclipse alignment stuff

    Bric - D'oh!

    2007-08-29 00:34:33.0

Wow! I'd completely forgotten the words 'umbra' and 'penumbra'!:O

    2007-08-29 00:40:13.0

Tangler = third place of learning (or at least remembering) Wink

    2007-08-29 00:40:59.0

You can credit Earth's atmosphere with providing an orangish color to the moon during an eclipse. The atmosphere acts like a filtered lens. It bends red sunlight into our planet's shadow and scatters out blue light. It's the same reason why sunrises and sunsets appear reddish. If Earth were an airless planet, its shadow would be pitch black and the eclipsed moon would be invisible.

If you were an astronaut standing on the moon during totality, you would see Earth eclipsing the sun. Earth would appear as a dark disk surrounded by a brilliant red ring-our atmosphere glowing with the light of all the planet's sunsets and sunrises. It's this light that we see bathing the moon during totality.

    2007-08-29 00:41:28.0

Bric - in my case, possibly the first;)

Okay, here's what might be a stupid question - what colour is the sun?

    2007-08-29 00:43:00.0

I mean, in pics it's all orangy-yellow, but would that colour (ie what we see) be affected by the atmosphere?

    2007-08-29 00:43:43.0

Now that is a good question. We call it yellow, of course, but it is actually a blend of different frequencies that our eyes perceive as something we call yellow... but it is different for each and every one of us according to the cells in our individual eyes...

Without the atmosphere at all, it is still yellow, for most humans at least,  as seen from the moon for instance.  But there are no beautiful red/purple/orange sunrises/sunsets  on the moon as it has no atmosphere to refract (simple terms bend) the light so that our eyes receive more of the red end of the spectrum...

    2007-08-29 00:46:28.0

Everything we see here on Earth is affected by our atmosphere.

    2007-08-29 00:47:06.0

    ahhhhh.....

In that case, I love our atmosphere!!!! Kiss

Sunsets and the accompanying ROYGBIV sky are one of my life's delights

    2007-08-29 00:50:30.0

This last week end I saw a perfect rainbow. It arced fully across the sky.

Driving along looking out the side passenger window, with the optical illusion of  seeing it set down in a field. (not that it does) No pot 'o' gold though.

    2007-08-29 01:21:23.0

I've seen a round rainbow.... and twins.

And triplets once, but the third one was a bit faint

    2007-08-29 01:22:38.0

Has anyone seen the "flash" of green at sunset?

    2007-08-29 01:37:45.0

Can't say I have.... Have read about it tho...

Would be spectacular to see it someday

    2007-08-29 01:43:21.0

Once, I thought( was fairly dammed sure) I saw it.

I do believe you have, usually, to be at sea (where I was). Or at least on the coast.

    2007-08-29 01:44:09.0

I've looked for it many a time (I've spent a fair bit of time on the west coast camping) but never been lucky enough...

    2007-08-29 01:45:13.0

Seems that it is common in Hawaii?

    2007-08-29 01:45:25.0

    2007-08-29 01:45:33.0

It only lasts about a second at most... so even if you think you are positioned to see it you may miss by just turning your head ever so briefly...

    2007-08-29 01:46:46.0

I seem to recall that you are most likely to see it at mid latitudes so the bit about Hawaii might be right.. although I think that there have been reports from Antartica...

    2007-08-29 01:48:02.0

great link dekrazee1... I especially liked this shot:

We had great seeing of the entire event from Riverside, California. This montage is of five separate images taken through a Meade ETX-90EC with a Canon 350D at prime focus, composited in Photoshop. This scope is a small Maksutov-Cassegrain, but it does the job nicely. I've been observing and photographing lunar eclipses for 25 years, and this was the very first time I've had a completely unobstructed view of an entire lunar eclipse.

    2007-08-29 01:52:36.0

I seem to recall that you are most likely to see it at mid latitudes so the bit about Hawaii might be right.. although I think that there have been reports from Antartica...

I "saw" it at a higher latitude. I thought it like a little bubble of mid spectrum light (like the pic's above), but I don't recall the sun being so visible. More a sort of blob in the clouds, rather like the penultimate photo in the sequence dek posted.

    2007-08-29 01:58:30.0

It's one of those things you see, like rare animals, when not actually looking.

    2007-08-29 01:59:41.0

I was suprised at the photo's myself... I hadn't seen them till I went looking tonight (having only read about it way back pre web days)... but I had thought that the sun was actually below the horizon at the time you would see the flash...I don't have time now but I think tomorrow I'll check and improve my knowledge of this...

I suspect you're right about the "not looking" bit...

    2007-08-29 02:01:43.0

I saw the moon today, In the middle of the day, and the sun was bright outside (?).
The kids that I work with loved it and pointed at it serveral times. Laughing Cool
    Just my two cents... Innocent

    2007-09-03 12:14:55.0

    Whereabouts are you prox?

I've seen the moon in the day before, but always in the later part of the afternoon.

    2007-09-03 17:02:39.0

In sweden, dunno if that explains it Cool

    2007-09-03 22:06:05.0

(hehehe yeah, I wrote that message before seeing the other topic.....)

What time was it, do you remember?

    2007-09-03 22:09:41.0

nah you can see it depending on it's orbital pattern during any part of the day or night

    2007-09-03 22:09:55.0

    dekrazee1 - like, 10-12 o'clock in the day

it's kinda cool anyway. Is it possible that the sun and the moon can be visible at the same time? Dunno much about this... Dunno what it's called in english... hm...

    2007-09-04 09:02:41.0

It is absolutely possible. Here's a really nice image of the moon in broad daylight.

    2007-09-04 10:12:34.0

...that's a little larger than the moon I'm used to seeing

and the "photo-tutorial.com" watermark leads me to believe that this isn't a 100% natural photo

    2007-09-04 11:39:18.0

Yeah, that's what I've seen prox.

    Not uncommon at all.

    2007-09-04 19:03:04.0

@SK the moon photo above is not a natural shot, it has  been "shopped".

    2007-09-04 21:05:37.0

    This is real though...

    it's a morning shot.

    2007-09-04 21:07:21.0

    Wow! That's nice....

    *singing*

    I LIKE THA MOOOOOON

I can see the moon in bright daylight today!!

    (It's 10 am here)

    2007-09-18 17:46:42.0

    yep I see it too!

    2007-09-18 17:47:51.0

I forgot to mention a small coincidence, last week, down on the coast at dusk, I actually saw the green flash we were discussing. And wished I'd had a camera ready...as if it were likely I would have caught it. I'm no photographer.Embarassed

    2007-09-19 02:16:27.0

    No way!! How cool!

    2007-09-19 03:31:15.0

Aah the moon, an excellent holiday destination.

    2007-09-19 03:34:28.0

If Richard Branson's plans succeed it may become a holiday destination.

    2007-09-19 03:42:23.0

He's just one of a few if I remember correctly?

    2007-09-19 03:47:27.0

As far as I can tell or am aware, Branson  only has plans for sub-orbital flights, if he can get Virgin Galactic "off the ground" , so to speak. The moon is a long way off for him.

    2007-09-19 03:54:35.0

He next to Nasa is probably going to succeed first. Well I hope he does anyway.

    2007-09-19 03:54:53.0

The idea for the space voyage thing is that you cover yourself in velcro so you dont float around.

    2007-09-19 03:55:54.0

    Hello to everyone.  Especially Morgan...!

    2009-07-30 03:56:35.0

And cheerful I am today! For no reason at all, just woke up feeling great! Haven't been online in almost a week, it feels gooooood to "get connected" lol
