For some reason, there seems to be a lack of good movies this year. When I think back, all I can recall are super hero movies.

    2008-09-04 19:52:58.0

Does any one have any suggestion for good films I might have missed?

    2008-09-04 19:53:25.0

(I'm looking for films that could possibly make an appearance in the Oscars or Cannes. You know, not just 'blockbusters')

    2008-09-04 19:54:31.0

    3:10 to Yuma

    i really liked that one.......

    2008-09-04 20:28:30.0

    What is it about?

    2008-09-04 20:29:27.0

it's a western......i won't be able to tell you the plot without saying too much.....

    russell crowe.......christian bale..........really good acting.....

it could have been a completely unbelievable ending if not for the acting.......the two of them make you buy it....

    3:10 to Yuma

    2008-09-04 20:33:22.0

Ahhhh.... Now I remember hearing about it....

I wouldn't have picked to watch that, but since you recommend it, I will!

    2008-09-04 20:34:12.0

    Thanks!

    2008-09-04 20:34:19.0

    oh.....the pressure......Undecided

i really hope you like it.....

    2008-09-04 20:40:22.0

    the performances were really great......

    2008-09-04 20:40:41.0

    LOL!

I tend to avoid Westerns.... I don't know why... something about them is a turn off.

    2008-09-04 20:40:58.0

    Same with war movies

    2008-09-04 20:41:07.0

i'm not a big western fan.....but i enjoy a good one every now and again....

this one has some complex characters......

    ....and christian bale.....Laughing

    2008-09-04 20:55:31.0

i really can't stand musicals - a very stereotypical guy thing, but i just can't get into them. I think it is where my hate of the 50's comes from - how many filims did Elvis make anyway?

I love music, and i love a good play or a good movie, just not those things combined. Although i did like "Keating" the musical strangely enough. That was very entertaining  . . . . although there was a moment or two where my bum squirmed on my seat in anticipation of boredom.

    2008-09-04 21:00:43.0

oh....you reminded me of one of the best movies i've seen.....

    a musical of course.....

    across the universe

brilliant.......but you must not judge it at all until after the scene with let it be......

    2008-09-04 21:02:23.0

you can.......but it's really great......we even have the soundtrack....(listen to it a lot) and i'm not a huge soundtrack person.....

but then again it's beatles music.........

    enough said....

    2008-09-04 21:11:39.0

yeah, i'd heard about it - but i don't want to tarnish my image of a macho blokey bloke (any further than it has degraded already)

    2008-09-04 21:15:02.0

hey....i can't force you to see it.....but you would be thanking me forever if you did.....

    2008-09-04 21:16:06.0

I don't mind musicals... What am I saying, I'm Indian and I watch Bollywood movies! LOL!

But I have to say, Hollywood doesn't do musicals very well.... I think the old ones, from when I was young were okay. None made recently are any good

    2008-09-04 21:17:33.0

this is not a hollywood movie....

    2008-09-04 21:18:04.0

    across the universe

    2008-09-04 21:19:14.0

    *looking it up*

    2008-09-04 21:19:35.0

damn you BG - now i have that bloody tune running through my head. There's only one way to get rid of this  . . . . <insert chicken dance music>

    2008-09-04 21:20:16.0

    nooooooooo!

    2008-09-04 21:22:18.0

Honestly, this year was a bad one for cinema, but much better for broadway.

If you haven't been to a theatre production this year, you're missing out!

    2008-09-04 23:22:52.0

but then again it's beatles music.........

    enough said....

@ moneypenny.....Did you know that there was a Beatles topic on tangler?

It didn't last a long time, but you can find the remnants here...

    2008-09-04 23:45:41.0

i did see that......a while back....

    thanks for pointing it out....Laughing

    2008-09-05 00:26:00.0

fine...don't go see one then, i dont care it was only a suggestion

    2008-09-05 00:41:54.0

I was just asking... I thought maybe there were some huge theatre productions I didn't know about

    2008-09-05 00:44:36.0

    there was....

    2008-09-05 00:52:10.0

    2008-09-11 03:53:47.0

People in the US were raving about it when it was released there

    2008-09-11 05:43:27.0

    2008-09-11 06:16:54.0

    2008-09-11 06:19:08.0

we went to see wall-e....with my daughter (3.5), and her cousins (4.5 and 6.5) ....they couldn't take their eyes off the screen.....they all loved it....

the grown-ups enjoyed it too.......except for papa bert.....but he's almost impossible to please......he thought it was "unrealistic".....lol!

    2008-09-11 09:43:00.0

is 3.5 her version or age? if it's her age, she seems to be aging backwards since you last mentioned it.....

    2008-09-11 10:10:26.0

i was going to say almost 4.....but she was 3.5 when we saw the movie.....

    wiseass....

    2008-09-11 10:13:41.0

    2008-09-11 10:25:31.0

i'm going to have to disagree....

    2008-09-11 10:25:52.0

    Muahahahhaah

    Imagine if humans had versions

    2008-09-11 19:57:17.0

    I think I'd be at 3.7

    2008-09-11 19:57:23.0

i'd still be in closed beta :emo:

    2008-09-11 20:12:25.0

I think people would be writing me off if I were still in closed beta...:-/

    2008-09-11 20:15:19.0

I would have been a dropped project...

    2008-09-11 20:54:41.0

Fuck it, I'd be a virus, a bug, a little worm in your program that does random stuff to annoy you

    2008-09-11 21:33:41.0

    2008-09-11 21:38:24.0

    2008-09-11 21:41:29.0

    Gah....

    2008-09-11 21:41:34.0

    You hate horses?

    Why?

    2008-09-11 21:41:56.0

I dont have a fear of them, I just really don't like them

    2008-09-11 21:42:14.0

    done.

@ common simon- morgan is a type of horse.

    2008-09-11 21:42:23.0

Same goes for monkeys, apes, chinps, gorillas, orangutangs, etc

    2008-09-11 21:43:34.0

for me, the mokey-family is my most hated animal on earth

    2008-09-11 21:43:55.0

what? even that cute little monkey pic - you know the one where it's hanging onto someone's finger (usually found in terribly nauseating chain emails about love, the iraq war, or friendship)

    2008-09-11 21:46:37.0

even my adorable little stuffed monkey morgan D:

    2008-09-11 21:48:18.0

BK - do you mean stuffed as in toy or as in "i hunted it down and killed it myself" stuffed.

    2008-09-11 21:49:45.0

i'm willing to delete the horse......i've been thrown off too many.....

but i refuse to back down on the monkeys.....

    i think.........

    2008-09-11 21:55:46.0

Yeah... mokeys closely followed by horses, and then dolphins.

    I like mostly eveything else

    2008-09-11 21:55:49.0

    you'd better be

    2008-09-11 21:55:52.0

I'm seriously goping to boycott this topic if there's any more

    2008-09-11 21:56:09.0

    2008-09-11 21:57:38.0

nah... the cartoons I can handle, just not pictures of actual creatures

(and please don't post any, I really beg you)

    2008-09-11 21:57:55.0

oh, however if one does fall in to your lap, i want to see a picture of it climbing all over you

    2008-09-11 21:58:26.0

    XP

    2008-09-11 21:58:29.0

    2008-09-11 21:58:50.0

    late comment for simon:

i mean a stuffed animal i bought at a novelty store

    2008-09-11 22:07:09.0

    ???

You dislike all the almost universally liked creatures!

    2008-09-11 22:07:22.0

    What about lions?

    2008-09-11 22:07:31.0

    I like lions

    2008-09-11 22:07:40.0

    i kid kid XD

    2008-09-11 22:08:04.0

    but not zoo lions

    2008-09-11 22:08:11.0

actually i don't like any 'zoo' things

    2008-09-11 22:08:25.0

    I'm really against them

    2008-09-11 22:08:38.0

    nope - hate ben stiller

    2008-09-11 22:08:45.0

    :P

    2008-09-11 22:08:56.0

    So I can post this?

    2008-09-11 22:09:46.0

i mean a stuffed animal i bought at a novelty store

BK - your credibility has dropped several points.

    2008-09-11 22:10:02.0

And I agree abt the zoo. I hate it. I hate going there and seeing all the creatures locked up. It's depressing

    2008-09-11 22:10:18.0

what about breeding programs? Zoos usually are the only reason some species can be brought back from extinction (due to us)

    2008-09-11 22:11:19.0

I try and discourage my friends from going. It's sad that they pay and endorse these activities

    2008-09-11 22:11:46.0

No.. the only reason why they are going extinct is because we interfered in the first place. Otherwsie, they are becoming exctinct because nature intended it.

The Earth has an interesting way of looking after itself, you know.

    2008-09-11 22:13:14.0

    onoes my e-cred D:

srsly i love animal too much to ever kill a monkey

    2008-09-11 22:14:55.0

yeah -0 that's what i was saying - we caused their destruction and in some small cases we can change that through programs that zoos use.

Apparently the extinction rate from the last 300+ years is devastating. If humans ceased to exist now it would take approx 10 million years for the biodiversity to get back to a point that it was roughly 2000 years ago.

    2008-09-11 22:16:16.0

sorry - didn't mean to kill the banter

    2008-09-11 22:24:06.0

Here's the thing - the Earth changes so quickly (yes, because of humans), so what was once fine say, 10, 20, 40 years ago, is very much different now.

Animals and the 'ecosystem' related differently to each other then, than they do now, and new species are constantly being developed/found.

    Imagine this.

Lets say the environment that a certain aminal lived in was perfectly stable 20 years ago. plants got eaten by little things, little things got eaten by big things and big things got eaten by bigger things - then the bigger thing would die, and the little things would eat that.

Reproduction was stable, water and nutrients were plentiful, and the environment was abundant with life and growth.

Lets say one of these animals from that environment is now at risk of becoming extinct. The environment has died off, water is less abundant, air quality is different, plants grow/reproduce at different rates. New species have adapted to the area and the food chain/life cycle is now different.

What happens when we release an animal back into an environment that is no longer acceptable?

It could alter the ecosystem dangerously, put other species at risk, and potentially make the habitat unstable and completely uninhabitable for the creatures *now* living in that environment.

Everything on this Earth has a place, and sometimes changes need to be accepted to adapt appropriately.

    2008-09-11 22:28:57.0

(and you didn't kill the banter, I just really wanted to type all that out)

    2008-09-11 22:29:12.0

I see your point about taking something away from the environment, and then returning something in its place, but the most effective way to help these creatures, is to accept their extinction, and to make the environment better for the ones we still have left.

Pollution, climate change, etc, If we can reduce our 'carbon footprint' on the Earth, and make these habitat's more environmentally sound, things will make a change for the better.

    :)

    2008-09-11 22:34:17.0

so basically what you are saying is "world, learn to adapt (to us) or perish". Without that biodiversity i think we will be the ones to perish. People of religion go on about atheists having a god hole - i think our grandchildren will have a "nature hole" to deal with (or something catchier than that)

i wasn't going to post that last bit cause i saw your addition (but i've never been one to delete what i originally have said). But there have been studies that show when a major predator (like tigers, thylacine, puma) is removed from the food chain the whole ecosystem suffers and never really recovers. It takes a very long time for these systems to adapt - more than the period that the absense of 100 years. We face some very serious issues - the least being that it will be a more boring planet.

    2008-09-11 22:41:17.0

No, simon I didnt say that at all.

    2008-09-11 22:52:08.0

oh, wait, sorry, only just read the bottom part of your last message

    2008-09-11 22:52:35.0

And LOL@ "god hole" - it just sounds so wrong....

    2008-09-11 22:56:12.0

"No Country For Old Men". "Before the Devil knows you're dead".  "In Bruges"

    2008-09-15 19:29:10.0

won some stuff at Oscars early this year, second doubtless will ( Phillip Seymour Hoffman's performance is much better than the one he gave for "Capote") - the third is just cool - a wonderful little piece of actor's indulgence.

    2008-09-15 19:30:46.0

No Country for Old Men was a good watch. The film takes you on a journey, which I like

    2008-09-15 19:45:42.0

Presumably the new Bond film will be well up there sales-wise?

    2008-09-15 23:46:17.0

I'm guessing so.... they've started building hype. (at least on the car blogs)

    2008-09-16 00:06:46.0

And the trailer is all over the place over here after its debut on the National Movie Awards last week. Very dark looking film, a follow on from the last one. Proper Bond as Fleming intended.

    2008-09-16 02:03:33.0

    Yeah, it does look different...

    2008-09-16 03:35:19.0

Then again, I'd watch it just for the Aston!:P

    2008-09-16 03:35:55.0

    i'd watch anything for bond.Laughing

    2008-09-16 08:37:20.0

I'd watch it just for Miss Moneypenny...(and the Aston of course) Wink

    2008-09-16 20:57:06.0

For me, the best film of 2008 is: Postdata: te quiero.
It is a very romantic, real film but with supernatural effect that in real life is impossible that they happen. But the argument of the movie, the feelings of a person who has just lost a very dear person, the pain that suffers and the procedure of recovery, seemed to me to be very real and I liked it enough. In addition the principal actress, does a spectacular role.

    Lidiiaaaaa!!Laughing

    2008-10-01 07:16:07.0

Which country is it from lidia?

    2008-10-02 11:34:14.0

Im hoping how to lose friends and alienate people will be the best flim of the yearXP

    2008-10-02 11:34:36.0

    That's a movie??

    2008-10-02 11:35:28.0

Today I took the kids to see some cartoon crap about chimps in space. I suppose the main thing is they enjoyed it.

    2008-10-04 05:41:18.0

you're lucky, ruski.........i sat through that one twice.

and please .........for the love of god........do not go see the one about  flies in space......trust me.

    2008-10-04 14:24:59.0

That reminds me of a Question in QI aaaages ago which was what would a fly do in space?

    2008-10-04 15:21:46.0

    or would butterfly be better?

    2008-10-04 15:49:24.0

    It couldnt buzz

    2008-10-06 01:06:06.0

    So I got it?

    2008-10-06 01:09:28.0

Oh erm... I guess. I thought you meant it in the other instance.

    2008-10-06 01:14:22.0

    hahahhaha

    D'oh!

    2008-10-06 01:17:52.0

Actually, would it be able to fly? There wouldn't be any wind resistance etc

    2008-10-06 01:18:16.0

Well it definitely wouldn't be able to walk!

    2008-10-06 01:28:24.0

    Happy! What's the answer?!

    2008-10-06 01:32:43.0

Is the fly in the cold hard vacuum of space, or in a spacecraft full of air in orbit?

Most things tend to die when exposed to actual space... except certain particularly hard-wearing things like cockroaches and lizards (well... they take longer to die). But in a spacecraft with adequate supply of food and oxygen... I imagine a fly would try to carry on as normal, but because they're used to flying against the pull of gravity they might find themselves pressed up against the ceiling when the "heavy" is turned off.

    2008-10-06 08:11:17.0

    it doesn't matter.....it was a stupid movie

    the flies had spacesuits

    2008-10-06 21:26:53.0

Waaait a minute... there was actually a movie made about this?!

    2008-10-06 21:37:17.0

never heard of it....which is probably a good thing...

    2008-10-06 21:41:13.0

    you are very lucky.

    2008-10-06 21:46:22.0

That reminds me of a Question in QI aaaages ago which was what would a fly do in space?

My answer would have been Crosswords.  There wouldn't be much else for a fly to do in space now would there?

    2008-10-07 01:37:54.0

    ummm... surf?

    2008-10-07 01:38:38.0

i believe this is what happy was on about....starting around the 3 minute mark.

    Oh Stephen! *swoons*

    2008-10-07 20:03:31.0

    It's such an entertaining show!

Yaay, I have something to watch on YouTube now!

    2008-10-07 20:13:53.0

Given that I can't see the vid right now, would that happen to be Stephen Fry? Because if it is *swoons too*

    2008-10-07 20:59:16.0

    Yes, he's the host!

    2008-10-07 21:02:04.0

you guys swooning over Mr Fry is like me swooning over whatsherface  . . . . .Lindsay Lohan (couldn't think of a hot lesbian at short notice). Only LL is a skank and i suspect not really a lesbian, not particularly talented or smart and  . . . . . . . . . actually to put it that way maybe i should be swooning over Stephen Fry.

    2008-10-07 21:15:49.0

    I. Cannot. Believe. You. Just. Compared. Stephen. Fry. to. Lindsay. Lohan.

    GAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

    2008-10-07 21:22:50.0

EGGactly!! Wha da matter wif you Simon?!

    2008-10-07 21:30:13.0

Stephen Fry is all sorts of cool. A geek at heart too!

Who cares about his personal life?

    2008-10-07 21:31:01.0

he'd appreciate the irony where he is . . . in the UK?

My point was that i thought swoon was typically used in relation to someone fainting over the opposite sex due to their extreme attractiveness - most commonly portrayed in 40's and 50's movies where the women characters of a delicate nature fainted due to the overly exerted maleness of the leading male character (who most likely was gay in real life  . . . .more irony). I deliberately his obvious appeal as an intellectual

    2008-10-07 21:55:43.0

Well, given that his on-screen persona is all I see, it's all I'm swooning over

The irony police can rest in peace:P

    2008-10-07 22:03:47.0

    Blackadder...

    2008-10-07 22:20:49.0

I saw Duchess the other day and it as fantastic.

I could never have believed they'd be able to make a film so boring that was ALSO pointless.

    2008-10-16 00:44:23.0

(note, I saw it under duress from my wife - we were both desperate to see something....)

    2008-10-16 00:44:47.0

Go see Step Brothers (if it's showing) it's equally pointless and entirely stupid, but also kinda funny XP

    2008-10-16 11:00:49.0

i liked pineapple express, hamlet 2 and burn after reading

    2008-10-16 17:02:42.0

Yeh, I have been thinking of watching Burn after Reading.

I doubt I could sit thru Step Brothers. I don't find Will Ferrell very funny

    2008-10-16 22:45:07.0

Recently watched In Bruge. I quite liked it

    2008-10-16 22:45:30.0

    2008-10-17 22:17:19.0

    2008-10-18 07:01:10.0

    2008-10-20 05:14:31.0

um....were you referring to the doll or the kids?.....cos they were quite freaky too....

    2008-10-20 07:20:23.0

    2008-10-20 07:22:07.0

    2008-10-20 22:01:35.0

Finally watched IRONMAN a couple of weeks ago - Robert Downey Junior is incredible - movie's predictable but he is great anyway he really is one of the most gifted actors ever, Ironman is far from his best performance , but that's still better than most - BTW 3-10 to Yuma was a remake of an old western. (useless information piece #345298466432 - I need to get this stuiff out of my head)

    2008-10-23 00:41:17.0

I went to see the new Bond film tonite.  Quantum of Solace.  Not bad, except for th 45 minutes of trailers and adverts that were on before it started.  No wonder people don't go to the cinema anymore if thats the shit you have to put up with.  Advertised start time 20:40.  So you queue up at 20:15 to get a decent seat.  You get in at 20:30, sit there for 10 minutes with nothing happening and then forty-five minutes of crap before the film starts...

    2008-11-02 12:39:40.0

They were even running an advert for the film that we were sat down to watch, bloody marvelous I thought...

    2008-11-02 12:42:25.0

45 mins? really? i always thought it was 25 mins....or maybe it just seemed longer for you...

    2008-11-02 13:45:54.0

45 mins.  I'm a grumpy old bastard and I time stuff like this so that when I complain there is at least one undisputable fact amongst my opinion, which might, to some, be questionable...

    2008-11-02 14:06:26.0

huh! thats a bit extreme....i'd need one bucket of pop corn for the ads and one for the film...

    2008-11-02 14:13:48.0

    what cinema chain is it?

    2008-11-02 14:14:13.0

    Aren't they all like that?
