Earlier on today (Friday) at a local pub quiz a question was asked about Austrlian slang. the answer was "as drunk as Chloe" so my question is who the**** is Chloe?

    2008-09-05 20:34:01.0

The phrase originated in Australia around 1892, however it is most famously used by Patsy Adam-Smith in Folklore of the Australian Railwaymen (collected and edited), Published by Macmillan Australia, 1969

    2008-09-05 20:38:47.0

    Read about the Author here

    2008-09-05 20:39:50.0

I was always under the impression that the expression referred to the painting of 'Chloe' that hung in Young and Jacksons Hotel in Melbourne, and referred to the fact that she was always in a hotel bar.

It is possible that Patsy Adam-Smith heard the story and used it in her book, but this is only a theory of mine..

As a lad I remember all the fuss about the painting, which some people claimed was indecent and immoral,,  Much more about it here....

    2008-09-06 00:01:56.0

No, Chloe is not actually a person...

    2008-09-06 04:06:34.0

thanks for the answers guys, I think I've heard about the painting before...sometime in the distant past

So as I'm doing the quiz next week the snowball question will be "who or what is Chloe?" and hope nobody else has checked

    it outWink

    2008-09-06 04:44:47.0

NFI... 12 years living in this country, and I've never ever heard that phrase!

    2008-09-06 05:44:33.0

great miker, if you win.....you should buy me a drink...

i had nothing to do with giving an answer.......but i did tell you about tangler.....Wink

Then again, I just spent the afternoon watching ants and leaving drops of coffee for em....

    2008-09-06 23:10:19.0

    Sounds quaint.

I wish I was doing something better today:)

    2008-09-06 23:48:47.0

Like waiting for your hard disk to freeze?

    :P

    2008-09-06 23:54:51.0

umm.. no..... I've already spent half my day fixing computers , thank you..

    2008-09-06 23:56:47.0

    Your flatmate's? Got it working?

    2008-09-07 00:19:12.0

    Yeah... All is good.

The next time it goes bust I'm seriously thinking of just telling her I can't fix it - and force her into just buying a new one, I mean, it really isn't that hard

    2008-09-07 00:20:47.0

The only reason I don't is that I have to let her use my lappie when her pc's down..

    2008-09-07 00:21:19.0

    Oh dear....

    2008-09-07 00:21:47.0

Sounds like there's no escaping trouble on that front for you

    2008-09-07 00:22:09.0

    hehehe love those images

    2008-09-07 00:25:39.0

in all my 33 odd years i have never heard this phrase. Does this mean i have my citizenship revoked?

    2008-09-07 18:40:16.0

that.....or you've spent your entire life as drunk as chloe.......and don't remember.....

    2008-09-07 18:41:11.0

i thought i'd at least heard of every slang (aussie) getting around - is this a saying not common in NSW? i am intrigued.

    2008-09-07 18:47:46.0

I think you are safe from deportation simon... it's probably not that common anymore:)

    2008-09-07 18:50:22.0

you know the more i think about how that sounds - especially with the clip you put in and a reference to clefts - that is one fairly rude saying. This poor Chloe woman has a 'reputation'

    2008-09-07 18:52:12.0

A lot of women had a reputaion in those times - maybe a bit jealous the guys were getting all the attention.

    Take Kate Kelly, for example..

    2008-09-07 18:56:42.0

    Who's Kate Kelly??

    2008-09-07 19:07:51.0

    Ned Kelly's sister

    2008-09-07 19:08:41.0

    She had a 'reputation'?

How come I never heard of her?

    2008-09-07 19:09:38.0

bugger.. you'll have to copy/paste the second link

    2008-09-07 19:10:20.0

Ahhhhh... she has a Wikip entry.... she does have a reputation!

    Thanks!

    2008-09-07 19:11:43.0

    Tip:

Skim through Ned's page first before reading about Kate - it'll make more sense

    2008-09-07 19:11:43.0

I always preferred "Full as a State School Hatrack"

    2008-09-11 03:53:11.0

Pfft... Since when do state schools have hatracks?

    2008-09-11 04:49:17.0

    :P

    2008-09-11 04:49:20.0

I dunno. My old primary school had one. But I've been out of school for longer than I was in it. Apparently now they have air conditioning and probably e-hatracks. Prima donnas need to harden up a little ...

    2008-09-11 04:53:07.0

    hehehe

I visited a girls' private school to do a presentation a few months ago - they had hair straighteners in the bathroom!!!

    2008-09-11 04:55:56.0

Yes. Good to see the big dollars tackling the big issues. Having said that though I do harbour a strong wish to send my boys to Gregory Terrace. Small problem there with big dollars though. Still it would be cheaper than daycare fees and we have a few years to go to save up ...

    2008-09-11 05:02:28.0

Why do people charge so much for daycare anyway?

    2008-09-11 05:03:40.0

    I don't really get that...

    2008-09-11 05:03:53.0

    Because they can.

    2008-09-11 05:04:04.0

    Yeah I suppose...

I'd like to open up a childcare franchise where it is cheap cheap cheap - might be a problem with overcrowding though...

    2008-09-11 05:05:14.0

    I'm sure I'd make a killing...

    2008-09-11 05:05:38.0

    money-wise, not the children!

    2008-09-11 05:05:49.0

    LOL

    2008-09-11 05:05:57.0

(as much as i'd like to, which is exactly why I'm not a childcare worker.... my facilities will be filled with qualified professionals who have the patience to deal with that sort of stuff)

    2008-09-11 05:06:53.0

1 boy all day and 1 boy before and after school ... each for three days per week is about $900/month. Most situations are different but at the moment that is mine thereabouts.

    2008-09-11 05:07:41.0

    How old are your boys?

    2008-09-11 05:08:14.0

    3.5 and 6.5

    2008-09-11 05:08:24.0

    Fair enough.

    That's way expensive though:O

    2008-09-11 05:09:15.0

But some may argue that you are getting a good deal -- some people pay exorbitant prices much higher...

    2008-09-11 05:10:25.0

Yes. It hurts to part with it. I would imagine it is like having a hot steel poker shoved up the arse ... cold end first to stop you from pulling it out. But it is a necessary evil. The daycare that is. The hot poker is totally unnecessary. Social building benefits are evident with the 3 year old. If only he'd stop belting people and getting himself put in the naughty corner. Who am I kidding. I love it. Belt away ... they probably deserve it.

    2008-09-11 05:13:39.0

So how much does that equate to per/day per/kid? or per hour, if they do it like that?

    2008-09-11 05:17:06.0

Not sure. I get paid monthly which is good for 2 days and shithouse for 28. Hang on ...

    2008-09-11 05:18:16.0

... based on the latest price of Singapore crude oil ... 56 dollars per day for 3yo and 28 dollars per day for 6yo before and after school. Based on the means trst, the government is prepared to chip in 17.5/day and 6.5/day leaving it at about 39 and 22. If that makes sense.

    2008-09-11 05:21:05.0

    Yeah... ok...

    2008-09-11 05:22:14.0

    39 + 22 = 71/day for 3 days = 213/week = about 900/month.

    2008-09-11 05:22:25.0

I'm trying to work out what I'd price my childcare at... I guess you can't really go much lower if the government is subsidising it. I didn't realise they did that.

    I wonder how that works..

    2008-09-11 05:23:29.0

The new government will also return 50% of your "out of pocket" at tax return time. The previous gov gave back 30%. That is nice when you get it back but in the meantime it's lentil soup and stale bread.

    2008-09-11 05:25:21.0

Ok wait... what the hell is a hatrack?!

    2008-09-11 05:48:41.0

And what's with that private school with HAIR STRAIGHTENERS?!?!

    2008-09-11 05:48:58.0

BTW, I'm so not having kids.... if the day care prices don't kill me, seeing my kid come back from school with straight hair might

    2008-09-11 05:49:39.0

    yeah I know ay..

    2008-09-11 05:50:35.0

    hat-rack

    2008-09-11 05:50:35.0

    Seriously? To hang hats on?

    :-/

    2008-09-11 05:51:07.0

hands are optional. Would depend on the level of punishment at the school.

    2008-09-11 05:51:43.0

    you're too quick.

    2008-09-11 05:51:56.0

    heheheheh

    Someone's on fire tonight...

    2008-09-11 05:52:06.0

day care prices are not only insane....but here in the u.s. the average day care worker is making slightly over minimum wage........because you know how important our children are.....let's give them the best that minimum wage can buy...Undecided

    2008-09-11 09:24:03.0

BTW, I'm so not having kids.... if the day care prices don't kill me, seeing my kid come back from school with straight hair might

    omg, dek. that is hilarious.

my daughter has amazing curls........i would be so upset if anyone straightened her hair.

    2008-09-11 09:25:48.0

although my hair is not as curly as it used to be......i would never straighten it on purpose.......

i used to work with these women with stick-straight hair........came to find out that it was naturally curly and that they spent hours every day straightening it! to me.....that is insane...the always wanted me to do mine......i don't look like me with straight hair....

    2008-09-11 09:27:42.0

I wish my hair would grow long enough so I could decide whether it was straight, curly or otherwise.

    2008-09-11 14:09:58.0

i'm going to have to change my avatar again - i'm going for my first hair cut in about 7 months. I will look like my work id card again.

    2008-09-11 19:15:01.0

Ooo! How long is your hair Simon?

    2008-09-11 19:58:00.0

bluegirl - I'll say that some people look good with straight hair. IMO, most don't.

And having those devices in a school just weirds me out. I can't explain why

    2008-09-11 19:58:45.0

    i completely agree, dek.

    2008-09-11 20:42:48.0

my hair is a respectable 18 cms long (had to measure it in the office to make sure)

and it is straight (sort of)

    2008-09-11 21:32:32.0

I don't know if that is longer or shorter than mine:-/

    Wait, I'll go measure mine

    2008-09-11 21:34:57.0

Okay, from the base to the tip of the hair, it's 15-20 cm. My hair's layered, hence the difference

    2008-09-11 21:36:44.0

    Why thanks!

    I think...:-/

    2008-09-11 21:43:30.0

    :O:O:O

Dek just admitted that she was girly!!!

    2008-09-11 22:15:42.0

No... I accepted being called a girl....

    No body calls dek girly!

    2008-09-11 22:30:08.0

    But you said thankyou

    2008-09-11 22:51:22.0

    no she didn't..

    2008-09-11 22:54:43.0

Oh.... I'd never say thank you to being called girly....

Instead, I've been known to headbutt the speaker

    2008-09-11 22:56:28.0

    Excuse me?

    2008-09-11 23:02:58.0

But... but I am a girl!

    2008-09-11 23:15:39.0

It could have been worse... he could have called me madam... or old hag

    2008-09-11 23:15:58.0

hmmmm.... is that ladie or laddie?

    2008-09-12 00:09:02.0

    more a reference to Little Britain (so both) . . . . . . think "I'm a layyyyyyydie"

    2008-09-12 00:26:18.0

    or jerry lewis...

    2008-09-12 00:27:12.0

About 3 months since last haircut and it's ranging from less than 1cm to about 4cm.

    2008-09-12 01:59:46.0

    Is that all?

    :O

    2008-09-12 05:44:06.0

    wow....your hair grows slowly.....huh?

    2008-09-12 09:13:53.0

i think mine reached 40-45cm at its longest...

    2008-09-12 09:51:01.0

My longest was down to the base of my spine. Not sure how long it would have been

    2008-09-12 09:53:42.0

um .....romeo....did you mean 40-45 mm?

    2008-09-12 11:00:50.0

me too, dek.....i've had my hair long enough to touch the top of my ass...

when ever i grew it long i always thought i would make some really cool hairstyles....
......but i'm too lazy ......and i don't know how....

i once worked with a woman (and by woman i mean teenager) who always had these awesome star trek hair-do's.

    2008-09-12 11:07:01.0

me too.... I had really long hair until I moved to the tropics - it just got far too hard to manage

    2008-09-12 11:08:44.0

hehehehe I had long hair in the tropics!

    2008-09-12 20:02:00.0

One day I got sick of it and asked my sister to chop it off. So she did!

My mum was horrified. Not only cos all the hair was gone, it seems cutting hair involves more than just cutting off a lenght of hair in a straight line:-/

    2008-09-12 20:03:20.0

If I stretch it out and round up the measurement I reckon I have one or two that hit 5cm. These are usually grey in colour. Bloody fabulous really.

    2008-09-13 03:01:45.0

When I was a grotty student I may have made it past the collar. However long that is.

    2008-09-13 03:03:44.0

The only thing left of those days is the grottiness.

    2008-09-13 03:04:20.0

no minx...it was definitely cm...though it was a few years ago...

    2008-09-13 09:41:49.0

My fave Scottish phrase for drunkenness is Skooshed! Also, I used to teach in a private school over here and all the boys had hair straighteners, let alone the girls!

    2008-09-15 23:42:17.0

    :O

    You have to be kidding!

    2008-09-16 00:21:57.0

hehehe and I like skooshed.... nice ring to it

    2008-09-16 00:22:08.0

Yeah - boys straighten their hair all the time

    2008-09-16 00:28:04.0

    Its more and more common

    2008-09-16 00:28:11.0

But... but how?? Surely only those with long-longish hair? But you can't have long hair in school?

    2008-09-16 00:49:43.0

    Its more and more common....

    2008-09-16 03:30:33.0

i (sort of ) get boys straightening their hair.......

but why are schools providing hair straightening products?

is this why the tuitions are so high?
