I was just looking at an interactive map, state-by-state, and most are divided by less than 10% (+/- 5 each way) I don't really think its fair that almost half the country loses out.

And... I don't want to seem like a CNNbot (or CNN hologram bot ) but they do have very accurate predictions. The minute that the polling closed at 9pm EST, they released the predicted results of 9 states. Without any data whatsoever from most of them. Crazy stuff. Obama seems to have already won.

CNN is running its projections on actual counts rather than on the exit polls after being burned in 2004 by actuals that were very different from the exit poll results..

Not too many people (Americans especially I think) understand the ramifications of the Electoral College vote system. Its a landslide for Obama under those rules (and you'll see the popular vote % shift - perhaps dramatically- when the western states, esp. California are counted)

The Democrats are increasing their majority in the Senate (they will not be filibuster proof though) they will have all 3 branches - Exec, Senate, House .... Obama is quite "centrest" although he did campaign on a few strong liberal issues but he might be under a lot of pressure from his more left of centre colleagues to push too hard left... I hope he follows his instincts and moves to drawing all sides in rather than excluding the real conservatives and thinking people in the Republican party.... without some support the neocons will use this as a strategy to consolidate their hold on the workings of their party.

The republican party is at a crossroads - if they go either Palin (no substance) or Rove & Frum et al (neocon ideology above country and good governance) the Party should be consigned to the dustbin of history. If they go back to real conservatism they will have the election 4 years hence... Obama will be buffeted by the remains of Bush Legacy and economic hard times.
No real idea when Obama speaks but I would think real soon. Its traditional for the loser to speak first... then very quickly the winner so the East coast folks can see before they go to bed... expect 20 minutes or so

For context: in the last Presidential run: Bush took 286 electoral college votes; Obama is at 338 and counting. His popular vote is going to be the highest since Lyndon Johnson in 1964 (when Jonson won an outstanding 486 ec votes)

I'm hopeful that Powell will serve. Rice has pretty messed up relations with America's true friends (and bush Cheny did the job with its enemies), a one term reprise by Powell as Secretary of State would do wonders to get rebuilding America's realations abraod with friend and foe off to a great head start.
Powell is one of the GREAT patriots to be found in the world. He is a statesman, knows that war must only be used as a last resort, and is a believer in collaboration between countries/governments. He still has a lot to give

The most interesting picks for Obama will be in his Financial kingpins... he doesn't get a choice of Fed Chairman of course, but key Commerce, Treasury portfolios will be the key to US walking the economic tightrope of the next two years. I fear economic collapse in 2010 for USA and all that entails wrt the rest of the world. I don't think it can be turned around in 2 years and the current bailout is making the house of cards all that more brittle and suseptible to the great derivatives crash.
Looks like Obama could reach as high as 370 in EC votes... I think the highest that was indicated by polls was 348 with most much less than that.

Talking heads on CNN saying that this may be the first time that the Secretary of Treasurey may be as important as the Secretary of State...(for the first time to tonight I think they are brilliant ... see my comment re the imporance hearlier in this conversation ) One did indicate that Obama has a number of good choices that he's been using as adviser up til now and may even bring in Paul Volckner for special advisory role. I know he's been using Buffet till now in this role.

The word is that he will be opening his transition office at noon Chicago time tomorrow morning. He will be working hard to make sure he hits the ground running on January 20th.
I'm worried that Bush is going to do a lot of changes to regulatory items he still has power over. These could be in areas of energy policy, science policy, agriculture, environment, etc. In these areas the exec branch can wipe out or moderate existing regulations, but once this is done it requires going through Congress to get new (replacement) ones set up and the threshold is quite high in terms of support needed. Obama might have to just ignore these to deal on issues that he can move quickly on. And Bush's legacy would end up being worse that what we see now.

It's not even funny how cheap he's planning to make college, and if you get a degree in teaching, it will also be very inexpensive if you teach for the next (I wanna say 4 years). I wonder post this election, because I often wonder about the minor details, that ... if as suspected, the incoming President galvanises the population of African-Americans ... will the term "African-American" disappear or accentuate ... and if the latter ... will we see a whole string of new terms to describe the minority ... for example ... Irish-American, Jewish-American, Alabaman-American ... etc ???

And do (as in to do something) is du, so there is some sort of j-ish sound that is in dew that isn't in do. I have never heard anyone pronounce it that way.

Personally I don't give a monkeys as long as I can understand what the person is saying. I do have difficulties with some Geordies and Glaswegians though, especially when they've been on the piss.

Geordies come from around Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in north east England. Newcastle is on the north bank of the river Tyne and Gateshead is on the south bank..
One of the most distinctive structures in Newcastle is the Tyne Bridge which looks like a smaller version of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

I believe construction the Syd Harbour Bridge was begun a few years before the Tyne bridge, but being a much larger construction, was completed a few years later than the Tyne bridge..
John Bradfield (a Qld'er) designed the Harbour bridge. His original design was scrapped for what it is now. He took his original design to Brisbane where it spans Kangaroo Point to Fortitude Valley/New Farm and is known as the Story Bridge.
