Hmm... it would seem that a Mr. Ralph Nader has his own party... named after himself?

Well, whatever. As long as there is any change that can help get global economics back on course, I'm in.

hmm... interesting website, Dek. I think it's very selfish how the United States general elections are carried out.

    2008-10-26 21:58:42.0

    2008-10-26 22:00:12.0

    2008-10-26 22:00:32.0

    I already voted mate.

    2008-10-26 22:01:06.0

What about 'Free World'? Is that a party now, too? Ugh.

I've actually been following the campaign and each person's... views, I guess.

I know, I want to know WHO you voted for.... Tongue out

    2008-10-26 22:01:55.0

I'm assuming that website counts from which country you're voting based on geocaching?

    2008-10-26 22:02:50.0

    Hmm... where is Kosovo?

    2008-10-26 22:10:00.0

Seriously? You don't know where Kosovo is?

    2008-10-26 22:10:30.0

Needless to say, the government of whatever Eastern European country they filmed that in killed them all for homosexuality.

    2008-10-26 22:10:56.0

    Really andro? Why?

    2008-10-26 22:32:54.0

    Cause she's the best looking..Smile

    2008-10-26 22:33:52.0

As far as aesthetics go, she is definitely better to look at than 99% of other politicians.  I don't think I'd like her around at breakfast time though...

    2008-10-27 03:40:50.0

LOL at Macedonia ~ 87% McCain from +400 votes.

I think either someone is taking the piss or the one Macedinian fellow I once knew and since chose to avoid is a representative sample.

    2008-10-27 04:41:28.0

    hahahaha

Yeah, a few of us were wondering at that too

    2008-10-27 04:52:40.0

I'm going to see Barack Obama and Bill Clinton speak Wednesday! Me soooo happy!

This made me register for a Flickr (who knew they were owned by Yahoo!?) to post all of the gigabytes of goodness I will be posting later on. I wanted to upload ~700mb of pictures from my trips, but that 100mb thing is killing me. If it wasn't a pay-by-year thing, I'd go ahead and spend the monies... Urg.

    2008-10-27 15:06:47.0

Huh. Nobody commented on my 'thousand million'. Methinks you is getting accustomed to my Sycho-ness. I'll have to change... right after I get back from setting my bed to fire!

...But sometime before I inhale this can of pesticide.

    2008-10-27 15:08:28.0

6.5 thousand million is accurate isn't it... 1 thousand million = 1 billion, population of the world is 6.5 billion (or thereabouts)

    2008-10-27 15:23:13.0

    right....

    2008-10-27 15:23:45.0

So why would we comment on it?

    2008-10-27 15:23:55.0

Reread that post SK. One of us has to have a tumor....

    2008-10-27 15:24:15.0

    6.5 t.m.

    1 t.m. = 1 bn

    6.5 t.m. = 6.5 bn

    2008-10-27 15:24:47.0

Ohh, you said IS acurate... nevermind....

    2008-10-27 15:25:58.0

Yeah, I guess you are too used to odd wordings to comment...

    Whatever...

    2008-10-27 15:26:25.0

Strike that, not going to see him speak. Poop.

    2008-10-27 15:37:59.0

    Why not? What's changed?

    2008-10-27 15:45:04.0

I have to go to a gala... I wonder which is more important.... Tongue out

Nah, I just realized that it was at the same time as the gala, which I had made plans for about 2 months ahead of time for.

    2008-10-27 16:01:21.0

Obama's grandmother is dead as of yesterday Frown

    2008-11-04 05:04:23.0

I knew it was going to happen... I guess it's just lucky that it happened this close to the election and not before. A potential weakness could have damaged his campaign.

    2008-11-04 05:08:46.0

Methinks sympathy outweighs signs of weakness here. Not all americans are cold hearted idiots, or so I am told... >.>

    2008-11-04 05:09:46.0

Anyway.. the race is on, and so far it's pretty even.

Current results are Obama 268 McCain 213.

    2008-11-04 05:10:25.0

    'Tis not even.

That's a margin John Kerry or Al Gore would have died to have had.

    2008-11-04 05:11:03.0

Wait, wait.. I think I've got it wrong... those numbers may not be correct, I think I might be looking at the wrong thing. Will double check and get back

    2008-11-04 05:12:17.0

More college graduates (I'm assuming undergrads qualify, too) vote for Obama... that goes against what I would have thought.

    2008-11-04 05:14:45.0

Why would you think the opposite?

    2008-11-04 05:17:57.0

Yeah my stats were right... the percentage was about the same. What's dumb is that I had the abc page open as I wrote the statistics from another page... I'd opened it hours ago and forgotten about it! Thanks for the reminder!

    2008-11-04 05:18:02.0

    Tongue out

    I don't know why...

Nix that, with college costs nowadays I can see why.

    2008-11-04 05:19:09.0

I guess we wont really find out until tomorrow anyway

    2008-11-04 05:21:45.0

Yeah, early morning for you, I guess.

If Obama doesn't win, I know a few people who swear on their lives that they're moving to Canada.

    2008-11-04 05:36:07.0

If Obama doesn't win, here's an option for the Democrats:

    2008-11-04 05:43:53.0

    Tongue outLaughingSurprisedCoolSmile

    That's hilarious!!!!!

    2008-11-04 05:45:36.0

almost makes me wanna go too!

    2008-11-04 06:34:01.0

here's an option for the Democrats:

what's funny is that she thinks she's joking Wink

    2008-11-04 13:37:54.0

Here is where my earlier predictions come true.  The one who is going to win is definitely going to be none other than - a politician...

    2008-11-04 14:53:32.0

CNN unveiled a hologram program for the occasion.

    2008-11-04 16:57:50.0

So far Obama is beating McCain in the popular vote... I swear, if a Republican wins again because of the damn electoral college... Wikipedia it and kill yourself after reading.....

    2008-11-04 17:00:46.0

um... Obama has 77 electoral votes to McCain's 34... :\

    2008-11-04 17:04:53.0

oops, my bad.  Obama has 103 electoral votes

    2008-11-04 17:05:42.0

Yep, the score is 103 to 49 right now

    2008-11-04 17:46:10.0

But still, it's waaay too early to be a trend

    2008-11-04 17:46:23.0

    He needs 270 to win...

    2008-11-04 17:52:13.0

I was just looking at an interactive map, state-by-state, and most are divided by less than 10% (+/- 5 each way) I don't really think its fair that almost half the country loses out.

    2008-11-04 17:59:04.0

    LOL!

Well, I guess it's fair one half will lose out either way

    2008-11-04 18:01:52.0

    Electoral college votes:

    175-61 now

    2008-11-04 18:02:56.0

Well if I lost, it wouldn't be fair to live there for four years. Kevin Rudd won by a landslide last year (holy crap its been a year already) so it was fair that he is running the country. But when its almost half-half.... imo that's just not right.

    2008-11-04 18:06:04.0

What are electoral college votes? I don't understand that?

    2008-11-04 18:06:22.0

Electoral college is pretty messed up if you ask... any american.

Now, I'm not usually patriotic, but watching CNN just now... They mentioned my county, Orange County, as the county that would decide the fate of the Florida votes, and whoever won Florida will win the General Elections... this at the moment I was listening to the theme from Saving Private Ryan... Tears.... Then the Obama campaign in Chicago... Don't You Forget About Me... I really need to change my playlist before I start producing estrogen.

    2008-11-04 18:20:10.0

And... I don't want to seem like a CNNbot (or CNN hologram bot Tongue out) but they do have very accurate predictions. The minute that the polling closed at 9pm EST, they released the predicted results of 9 states. Without any data whatsoever from most of them. Crazy stuff. Obama seems to have already won.

    CNN Says:

    Obama: 174
    McCain: 69

*cough* AP would beat Reuters in a fight anyday *cough*

    2008-11-04 18:27:14.0

Well.... to say without any data would be incorrect I think.

They base it on exit polls don't they?

    2008-11-04 18:29:51.0

CNN is running its projections on actual counts rather than on the exit polls after being burned in 2004 by actuals that were very different from the exit poll results..

    2008-11-04 18:31:07.0

Bric - then actual counts aren't actually predictions?

    2008-11-04 18:37:34.0

200 to 124 according to the BBC

add some of the fairly safe Democrat states and we'd have a winner...

    2008-11-04 18:49:44.0

    One would hope so!

    2008-11-04 18:53:45.0

In my son's riding in Ohio McCain is running at 56% for McCain - I keep teasing him as the Ohio Valley is one of the specific areas that were behind McCain's decision to select Plain !

    2008-11-04 18:53:49.0

I can't believe they can declare this early....

    2008-11-04 18:53:55.0

    Bric - LOL!

Time for your son to move?:P

    2008-11-04 18:54:18.0

Eeek! The strange BBC touch screen is back!

    2008-11-04 18:57:13.0

I wonder if Obama will get shot...

    2008-11-04 18:57:47.0

    ???

    Like JFK you mean?

    2008-11-04 18:58:10.0

Well there are conspiracies of his impending death if he gets elected. I'm just saying..

    2008-11-04 18:58:40.0

    Sheesh...

To be expected I guess... but still....

    2008-11-04 18:59:12.0

    Bric, that's waaay cool!

    2008-11-04 19:00:01.0

With it standing at 195 for Obama (and 55 electoral college votes in the bag for California) he sits at 250 of 270 needed to win.

    2008-11-04 19:00:03.0

Cept Google are a bit outdated?

    2008-11-04 19:00:29.0

The Google mashup is based on actual counts....no guessing or melding with the useless exit polls

    2008-11-04 19:04:28.0

Cool, I'm gonna follow yours then

    2008-11-04 19:10:05.0

Bric, that mash up is soooo cool!

    2008-11-04 19:21:17.0

Not mine --- I stumbled across it on Google and decided to post it where I could go immediately to it (and to kibitz with my sons) whenever CNN went to commercial break or the talking heads got too much for me Tongue out

    2008-11-04 19:26:16.0

I've embedded this conversation on the page below the map .... silly me (takes a bit to get back into the Tangler habit... but its coming)

    2008-11-04 19:30:35.0

We were all staring at it here in the officeXP

    2008-11-04 19:30:37.0

Yes... To the untrained eye it might seem as though John McCain is pulling back, with an assured win in atleast 8 more states, however the points matter the most. California does it for Obama.

I think that it's quite funny that, as we type, McCain and Palin are in a suite named after an Arizonian who failed in runnng for president...

Best wishes, McCain, but when you put the before and after photos up for W. and his presidency, you look like the after... already!

    2008-11-04 19:35:03.0

ummm.... Isn't it closer than it looks, judging by the popular vote?

    *shrug*

    2008-11-04 19:46:19.0

Not too many people (Americans especially I think) understand the ramifications of the Electoral College vote system.  Its a landslide for Obama under those rules (and you'll see the popular vote % shift - perhaps dramatically- when the western states, esp. California are counted)

    2008-11-04 19:48:35.0

Okay, so all we need to watch is the Electoral numbers?

    2008-11-04 19:49:12.0

Just watching the "hologram" interview on CNN... now if we could get it delivered to our living room that way rather than being on the flat screen TV

    2008-11-04 19:49:35.0

For who takes the President, that's all that counts in the end.

    2008-11-04 19:49:53.0

hehehehe EEK! Imagine having a McCain projected at ya!

    2008-11-04 19:50:14.0

    Oh okay..... thanks!

    2008-11-04 19:50:21.0

The Democrats are increasing their majority in the Senate (they will not be filibuster proof though) they will have all 3 branches - Exec, Senate, House .... Obama is quite "centrest" although he did campaign on a few strong liberal issues but he might be under a lot of pressure from his more left of centre colleagues to push too hard left... I hope he follows his instincts and moves to drawing all sides in rather than excluding the real conservatives and thinking people in the Republican party.... without some support the neocons will use this as a strategy to consolidate their hold on the workings of their party.

    2008-11-04 19:53:33.0

Syndey election watch mentioned on CNN.... looks like a party going on somewhere!

    2008-11-04 19:54:09.0

Oh, yeah, there's something happening at the American House or something...

    2008-11-04 19:55:26.0

Wish I had one to go to too:)

    2008-11-04 19:55:38.0

Hey - if they let you drink at work (its part of the Community Manager job description isn't it?) I'll drink with you from here.... and I'll break out the noisemakers and other party favours too...

    2008-11-04 19:57:00.0

    “Obama takes it !

Assuming 55 EC votes of California will be going to Obama, the election is his! (215 is the magic number of the rest of the country and he has 220) and it looks like he's headed past 300.

    2008-11-04 19:58:02.0

You heard it here before CNN

    2008-11-04 19:58:34.0

CNN just announced 220 - but even they said California is in the bag

    2008-11-04 19:59:08.0

    Ok, now I'm confused

    2008-11-04 19:59:17.0

The mashup shows Obain at 220 EC votes.... California has 55 votes & McCain didn't even bother to campaing there - wrote it off from the start as going hard Obama

    2008-11-04 20:00:19.0

As I typed the above CNN just announced Obama win

    2008-11-04 20:00:32.0

    He Won!!!!!!

    2008-11-04 20:00:48.0

    OHHHHhh..... I get it

    2008-11-04 20:00:51.0

    Damn you, Bric!!!!

    2008-11-04 20:00:54.0

They waited for Polls on west to close

    2008-11-04 20:00:54.0

    YAAAAYYYY!!!!

    2008-11-04 20:00:55.0

Yes, yes he did...hmm...wonder what happens now

    2008-11-04 20:01:10.0

BARACK OBAMA!!!! OFF TO WATCH TV!!!CAPS!!!

    2008-11-04 20:01:11.0

I wish I was in Grant park Chicago - I've spent many a happy Sunday there... but it seems incredible that they could get 1 million between their and the beaches in Obama's victory celebration

    2008-11-04 20:01:58.0

EEEK! My hands and feet are all tingly

    2008-11-04 20:02:03.0

That would be the place to be.... I can just imagine the atmosphere there!

    2008-11-04 20:02:59.0

    I'm nervous.

Not because I don;t believe in his abilities, but because there's a new guy in office and a new party in office. I just wonder what the future holds.

    2008-11-04 20:03:26.0

    WOW.... It's really happened...

    Surreal

    2008-11-04 20:03:35.0

    NBC has declared Obama wins

    2008-11-04 20:03:40.0

I'm going to watch the tv too.

    2008-11-04 20:04:10.0

    I'm watching it here online....

    C'mon, lets hit the pub!

    2008-11-04 20:04:49.0

I liftin a scotch and toasting the win now

    2008-11-04 20:10:22.0

Meh.. nothing interesting on tv lol

    2008-11-04 20:11:40.0

Can't wait for Obama to show

    2008-11-04 20:13:31.0

Yeah... I'm interested in what he has to say. I'm more interested in McCain though

    2008-11-04 20:14:12.0

    Ewwww. Nah.

I'd like to never set eyes on him and his running mate again.... tho she might be running in 4 yrs again

    2008-11-04 20:15:01.0

I just want to listen to his 'defeat' speech. Then he can F@#% off with the rest of em

    2008-11-04 20:15:53.0

Watch for the Rpublican senator in Alaska to squeak out a win; senate forces him to resign over felony conviction; Palin becomes state senator and uses the entire 4 years to run for presidency.

    2008-11-04 20:17:32.0

I'm gonna get myself a celebratory coffee...

    Go OBAMA!

    2008-11-04 20:17:55.0

Bric - Try not to ruin the mood will ya?!

    :P

    2008-11-04 20:18:20.0

Palin has already commited to remain in the public eye on the national scene but in a consilitory and building role as (to quote her but I don't have the exaxct workds in front of me) she's been disappointed on how divisive this campaign has been

    2008-11-04 20:18:48.0

    McCain getting booed...

    2008-11-04 20:19:15.0

McCain concedes - he says American People have spoken clearly and he's already talked to Obama

    2008-11-04 20:19:24.0

Bric - She's disappointed?! She's was the dividing factor!

    2008-11-04 20:20:00.0

McCain wasn't booed per say...his comments that Obama loves his country and McCains concession was booed

    2008-11-04 20:20:05.0

Yeah... they're still against Obama. Losing is tough

    2008-11-04 20:20:21.0

Yes she's disappointed.  She also blamed the "blogoshphere" and other factors on the internet for distoring her position and for preventing constructive dialogue from taking place

    2008-11-04 20:20:51.0

I've watched her speeches... I don't buy that

    2008-11-04 20:21:17.0

She see's her future as the next great builder of her country after the democrats get there wish at dividing the country

    2008-11-04 20:21:30.0

McCain's speech is commendable, though hard to believe

    2008-11-04 20:22:33.0

I don't now if she is just evil, dumb, or what... but she so strongly believes that with the "witches" and "demons" cast out by her preacher she has the religious and moral authority to be God's messenger to the American people through their government

    2008-11-04 20:22:54.0

    *groan*

How can someone like ever be leader?!

    2008-11-04 20:23:24.0

I was a big McCain supporter - was really sorry to see him toss his honour aside for his political ambition

    2008-11-04 20:23:28.0

If she was to spend the next four years running for presidency, I'm sure she'd spend at least three of them deciding on outfits for the campaign

    2008-11-04 20:23:58.0

I hope McCain uses his remaining time to rebuild his honour and fight the neocons in his party and the ones he invited into his camp including Rove, Frum et al (and Palin who they didn't like).

    2008-11-04 20:24:58.0

McCain thanks Palin and his crowd goes wild with support for the first time.

    2008-11-04 20:25:17.0

    LOL @ Morgan!

    2008-11-04 20:26:40.0

Bric - I hope she doesn't speak now

    2008-11-04 20:27:09.0

Bric - any idea when President Obama will speak?

    2008-11-04 20:27:25.0

The republican party is at a crossroads - if they go either Palin (no substance) or Rove & Frum et al (neocon ideology above country and good governance) the Party should be consigned to the dustbin of history.  If they go back to real conservatism they will have the election 4 years hence... Obama will be buffeted by the remains of Bush Legacy and economic hard times.

    2008-11-04 20:27:45.0

No real idea when Obama speaks but I would think real soon. Its traditional for the loser to speak first... then very quickly the winner so the East coast folks can see before they go to bed... expect 20 minutes or so

    2008-11-04 20:28:32.0

That was the John McCain I respected.... Where was he the last six months?  He had to tip his hat to Palin, but otherwise it was everything I wanted to hear him say

    2008-11-04 20:29:33.0

So you think he would have won if he hadn't had gone all mean and aggressive?

    2008-11-04 20:30:47.0

John, I love you.  I'm glad you lost. I hope you continue work hard for the country you love, and once again prove to be a great patriot and true Maverick

    2008-11-04 20:34:05.0

*sigh* in his speach... his wonderfully constructed speach, I must admit, he did say that he'd leve it to others to determine what he could have done to win.

Good news is, if he plays hopscotch tonight, he won't remember the entire election tomorrow.

For those who didn't watch the Colbert Report, hopscotch is referred to as being hopped up on scotch.

      Move along.

    2008-11-04 20:34:36.0

I concur, Bric, as long as he agrees to stop using that word.

    Smile

    2008-11-04 20:35:24.0

    Wikipedia is already updated, also.

    2008-11-04 20:37:01.0

    broken link?

    2008-11-04 20:42:04.0

Still bad at making Wiki links, but it's fixed. You couldn't have searched for that on your own, though? Srlsly?

    2008-11-04 20:42:56.0

My link worked just fine before you posted that, mind you.

    2008-11-04 20:43:28.0

For context: in the last Presidential run: Bush took 286 electoral college votes; Obama is at  338 and counting.  His popular vote is going to be the highest since Lyndon Johnson in 1964 (when Jonson won an outstanding 486 ec votes)

    2008-11-04 20:43:58.0

...Which means an amazingly high voter turnout, n'est-ce pas?

    2008-11-04 20:44:45.0

    It did not...

    2008-11-04 20:44:55.0

And yeah, heaps of people turned out, they said it was a record number

    2008-11-04 20:45:22.0

*Ahem* It did.... I edited it before you posted... Ask Dek, I'm sure she can see the times in the logs.

    2008-11-04 20:45:37.0

Was the world in favour of W. both times he ran, or how many? 0? Hopefully?

    2008-11-04 20:50:40.0

And when is his speach? Did I miss it?

    2008-11-04 20:50:52.0

I'd like to be a fly on the wall in Obama's mind. How would he be feeling right now, what would he be thinking?

    2008-11-04 20:52:57.0

Nah, you haven't missed the speech Synth. Hasn't happened yet

    2008-11-04 20:53:11.0

Obama has arrived at Grant Park

    2008-11-04 20:54:42.0

Good. Now to go beat some sense about P2P into the Vice President Elect's brain....

    2008-11-04 20:54:45.0

    WOO HOO!

    Here we go

    2008-11-04 20:54:53.0

    Within 2 minutes of speaking

    2008-11-04 20:54:54.0

Ooh, do we have a certain Bric inside his campaign? Are you his cab driver?

    Tongue out

    2008-11-04 20:55:12.0

I really don't see what all the fuss is about...

    2008-11-04 20:56:17.0

    WOO HOO! Here he is!

    2008-11-04 20:58:50.0

No I'm not his cab driver... would be honoured though

    2008-11-04 20:59:01.0

    *back to tv*

    2008-11-04 20:59:04.0

The first family in red... community building ?

    2008-11-04 20:59:13.0

    LOL

That's just what I thought Bric!

    2008-11-04 20:59:29.0

    I loved his opening line...

    2008-11-04 20:59:55.0

    (A bit delayed for me)

    2008-11-04 21:00:40.0

    Yes, good one:)

    2008-11-04 21:00:47.0

Do you want me to type ahead???

    2008-11-04 21:00:53.0

Just how far away are you... I though Sydney was still on the planet Wink

    2008-11-04 21:01:22.0

*wonders if he's wearing a bullet-proof vest under that suit*

    2008-11-04 21:01:37.0

    HAHAHA

Sounds like we're abt 30s behind you

    2008-11-04 21:01:37.0

    Blame it on lag

    2008-11-04 21:01:42.0

    Change has come to America...

    2008-11-04 21:01:46.0

Good to see that Obama's crowd didn't boo the mention and recognition of the service given by McCain

    2008-11-04 21:02:30.0

    Yeah, good crowd

    2008-11-04 21:02:53.0

Time for the rhetoric that's the staple of these speeches:)

    2008-11-04 21:03:18.0

BTW, have I said how much I like Michelle Obama?

I think she's the perfect First Lady

    2008-11-04 21:06:19.0

Remember this moment... It's one of those "where were you" touches  one of only abut a half dozen that I remember in my life

    2008-11-04 21:18:09.0

Ok, I'm getting too sentimental watching people openly crying in the crowd.

    2008-11-04 21:18:40.0

I love it that CNN isn't talking over the beautiful moment.

    2008-11-04 21:19:15.0

    :) Yeah...

I'm glad I have another American 'where were you' moment to overshadow the 9/11 moment

    2008-11-04 21:19:15.0

    Where-were-you moments I remember:

    Celebration of the new millenium
    9/11 and subsequent attacks
    First Black president

    2008-11-04 21:20:07.0

    BBC keeps talking

    2008-11-04 21:20:15.0

hmmm... don't quite remember the millenium...

This one I'll be telling kids about when I'm oldXP

    2008-11-04 21:20:48.0

I'm sure there could be more, but those are the standout ones for me.

    2008-11-04 21:20:49.0

Mine are Jack Kennedy election & assassination, Bobby K assassination, MLK assassination, John Lennon  assassination, 9/11, Pierre Trudeau Election & declaration of War Measures Act,  and tonight

    2008-11-04 21:21:30.0

So unfortuantely predominantly bleak for me... But Camelot (Kennedy) and Trudeau were when I was very young and/or very idealistic so they are the strongest for me.  That said, tonight rocks.  I trust Colin Powell will be in his cabinet and if so that will be almost in the upper rank

    2008-11-04 21:22:57.0

No way! You think Powell will re-enter the white house?!

    2008-11-04 21:23:26.0

It's weird how things lose significance as we get older.

    2008-11-04 21:24:12.0

I'm hopeful that Powell will serve.  Rice has pretty messed up relations with America's true friends (and bush Cheny did the job with its enemies), a one term reprise by Powell as Secretary of State would do wonders to get rebuilding America's realations abraod with friend and foe off to a great head start.

    2008-11-04 21:24:51.0

Powell is one of the GREAT patriots to be found in the world.  He is a statesman, knows that war must only be used as a last resort, and is a believer in collaboration between countries/governments.  He still has a lot to give

    2008-11-04 21:27:51.0

I like Powell... I just didn't think he'd come back into politics

    2008-11-04 21:32:54.0

It would be great if he were Sec State.

Who else would be part of the 'Dream Team'?

    2008-11-04 21:33:58.0

    I need you to confirm...

After the speach, on CNN, a commentor said "... that is the same [line] that Martin Luther King Jr. said on the night before his assasination..."

Did anyone find that a bit... foreboding? Hopefully the poor commentor realized her mistake.

    2008-11-04 21:38:10.0

    Mos. Def. Captain America, Dek.

    2008-11-04 21:38:26.0

No idea Synth. Wasn't watching CNN.

What was the line, do you remember?

    2008-11-04 21:39:23.0

Uhm... not exactly... she said something like "... that is the same refrain..." or something... maybe look for "MLK final speach before he was assasinated" on Google? Too tired for myself. Goodnight, World.

    2008-11-04 21:40:43.0

    Good night Synth!

    2008-11-04 21:41:05.0

The most interesting picks for Obama will be in his Financial kingpins... he doesn't get a choice of Fed Chairman of course, but key Commerce, Treasury portfolios will be the key to US walking the economic tightrope of the next two years.   I fear economic collapse in 2010 for USA and all that entails wrt the rest of the world.  I don't think it can be turned around in 2 years and the current bailout is making the house of cards all that more brittle and suseptible to the great derivatives crash.

    2008-11-04 21:43:28.0

Looks like Obama could reach as high as 370 in EC votes... I think the highest that was indicated by polls was 348 with most much less than that.

    2008-11-04 21:47:46.0

WoW.  neat night, I'm still tingling from the scenes in Chicago....

    2008-11-04 21:48:34.0

I hope that Obama can deliver now, he's got an enormous task ahead of him..

McCain was like the boy who fell out of the boat, (he wasn't in it) he was handicapped from the start by his age and by the Bush admin baggage..

A great speech by Obama, I sincerely hope that he has the substance to back up the rhetoric.

    2008-11-04 21:49:41.0

Talking heads on CNN saying that this may be the first time that the Secretary of Treasurey may be as important as the Secretary of State...(for the first time to  tonight I think they are brilliant ... see my comment re the imporance hearlier in this conversation Laughing)  One did indicate that Obama has a number of good choices that he's been using as adviser up til  now and may even bring in Paul Volckner for special advisory role.  I know he's been using Buffet till now in this role.

    2008-11-04 21:49:58.0

January 20th 2009.... keep you calendar open for the Inaugural Address

    2008-11-04 21:56:42.0

If only we could throw Bush out of the House right now:P

Then again, Obama probably needs the time to re-energise.

    2008-11-04 22:18:52.0

The word is that he will be opening his transition office at noon Chicago time tomorrow morning.  He will be working hard to make sure he hits the ground running on January 20th.

    2008-11-04 22:36:37.0

I'm worried that Bush is going to do a lot of changes to regulatory items he still has power over.  These could be in areas of energy policy, science policy, agriculture, environment, etc.  In these areas the exec branch can wipe out or moderate existing regulations, but once this is done it requires going through Congress to get new (replacement) ones set up and the threshold is quite high in terms of support needed.  Obama might have to just ignore these to deal on issues that he can move quickly on.  And Bush's legacy would end up being worse that what we see now.

    2008-11-04 22:43:36.0

Me too, Bric.  BTW, have you noticed how quiet its gotten in here... Is everybody but us out drinking?

    2008-11-04 22:45:47.0

    et tu, Bric?

    2008-11-04 22:48:24.0

I dunno.  It is shaping up that Obama is going to have a Democratic Congress as well, so we might see a lot of changes in the coming months

    2008-11-04 22:52:01.0

-however-  there is no such thing as a magic bullet.  Take your estimates of how good and cut it in thirds.  That is just about the highest you can resonably expect.  Life in USA is shitty, we'll fix it, but slowly - slower than people will want

    2008-11-04 22:53:18.0

Yeah... despite all the hype, I can't stop thinking of the mess and the system he inherits (and yes, I know I've said this before)

    2008-11-04 23:35:26.0

I don't think W. would do that... I mean, sure, his policies are driving this country into the ground, but atleast he understands how important this is. Lives are at stake, quite literally, and I don't think he has the concience to do that. I think he'll work with the big O.

When I saw the predicted result pop up at exactly 11pm... wowzers. I just felt like... everything would be... atleast different. It's not even funny how cheap he's planning to make college, and if you get a degree in teaching, it will also be very inexpensive if you teach for the next (I wanna say 4 years). It just feels so good to see that the US has a fighting chance, and so do I.

So, yeah, I might've cried a little... but then the tears turned into fire... ohh, and monster trucks (which I've never liked, at all....) and other stuff... yea.

Alaska must have been very sad, there polls closed 2 hours after the election was called. Tongue out

    2008-11-05 05:34:27.0

Hehe, that's what Alaska gets for being way over on that side of the country :P

    2008-11-05 07:51:43.0

what you you mean "that side of the country?"  Alaska is the northernmost, easternmost, and westernmost state of the United States.  Which side are you referring to?

    2008-11-05 08:25:24.0

    All of them.

    Except south.

    2008-11-05 08:42:33.0

    well...i never knew that...easternmost & westernmost......it certainly gets around a bit...

    2008-11-05 08:50:12.0

What with how East and West wrap around on each other, without an East or West pole to end at, Maine could claim the same honour.

Of course a normal person would just think in terms of "how far in this direction can I go without falling off the continent"... but who needs normal? :P

    2008-11-05 08:56:26.0

    I completely agree, SK.

There were black people at my high school/ college today running around teasing all white people (regardless of whom they voted for) that they had voted for McCain. I laugh. Epic win.

    2008-11-05 13:18:47.0

Ah well I suppose it's best that Obama won.  After all, having a President named after a bag of oven chips (or fries) would be a bit naff.

    2008-11-05 14:03:17.0

On the news here yesterday, they had this segment about a town in Japan getting behind Obama.... cos the name of the town is Obama!

    2008-11-05 16:40:07.0

Yea... I saw that on the news like 4 mos. ago, Dek!

    Crazy stuff!

    2008-11-05 17:02:57.0

Oh dear.... It's amazing they have the energy!

    2008-11-05 19:58:12.0

Hey Bric, I was looking at the Google mashup on your site... How come there are still undecideds?? Or is that just because they still counting the votes or something?

    2008-11-05 21:32:04.0

yeah, that's it.  The votes are in, they just need to be counted.

    2008-11-05 22:20:12.0

One of the Yankie fellows at work was quite simply funny today. We said to him ... I suppose it couldn't have got any worse than G.W. His reaction (in his yankie accent) " ... I wouldn't be too sure about that ... Sarah Palin."

    2008-11-06 01:17:21.0

LOL! He's got an excellent point though

    2008-11-06 02:31:07.0

Yankie accent? I'm trying to visualize... like Italian-American?

    2008-11-06 04:00:54.0

Sorry. Yank is a figure of speech in these parts. There are two others we often use. The lad in question is from Mass a chew sits and raised in Wisconsin.

    2008-11-07 01:50:23.0

You mean 'Yankie' is not a well known term??

    2008-11-07 02:01:49.0

Not sure what I mean except I mean all american and not italiano american.

    2008-11-07 02:33:03.0

    *brain explodes*

I'm sure if I heard it it would make more sense... and I'd be like "......O!"

    2008-11-07 05:35:09.0

No, no, I've heard the term... I just have no clue what a yankee 'sounds like'...

    2008-11-07 19:43:27.0

Just an American accent sounding like which ever part they're from!!

    ARRGGGHHH

    *pulls hair out*

    2008-11-07 19:46:12.0

Yeah, but I don't know what it sounds like. 0 Mental WAV files returned for search term: Yankee

    2008-11-07 19:47:43.0

*runs out of the topic screaming*

    2008-11-07 19:48:29.0

    Impossible. This topic is theoretical.

    2008-11-07 19:50:14.0

*watches dek theoretically run out of the topic screaming*

    2008-11-07 20:06:21.0

She ran out of the theoretical topic, or she theoretically ran out of the topic?

    2008-11-07 20:07:15.0

... Now, I can do an amazing Southern Belle accent....

    Tongue out

    2008-11-07 20:08:20.0

Whatever... key word is I ran!

    2008-11-07 22:36:40.0

    ...And now you're back.

    2008-11-07 22:54:12.0

    Shhh... don't tell Synth!

    2008-11-07 23:04:47.0

One particular word I associate with the american tongue is dual. Pronounced dool. Example of use ...

My car has dual wheels, dual carburettors, dual exhaust pipes, dual sunroof, dual cigarette lighters ... etc.

    2008-11-08 02:00:34.0

They pronounce it the correct way. Dual...  (doo)al - as in doggy doo-   we pronounce it (dew)al -as in mountain dew-

    2008-11-08 02:32:35.0

And they probably spell it correctly too ... oops.

    2008-11-08 02:40:16.0

Mind you duelling cigarette lighters would be something to see ...

    2008-11-08 02:41:01.0

*14 year old playing Halo* you forgot dual wield

    2008-11-08 02:57:20.0

I tried to see which way I pronouce dual... and now my tongue is confused

    2008-11-08 04:13:22.0

    Dual pronunciation

    2008-11-08 04:39:13.0

I wonder post this election, because I often wonder about the minor details, that ... if as suspected, the incoming President galvanises the population of African-Americans ... will the term "African-American" disappear or accentuate ... and if the latter ... will we see a whole string of new terms to describe the minority ... for example ... Irish-American, Jewish-American, Alabaman-American ... etc ???

    2008-11-08 04:46:22.0

They pronounce it the correct way. Dual...  (doo)al - as in doggy doo-   we pronounce it (dew)al -as in mountain dew-

We say it dew-al in England, and we invented the language...

    2008-11-08 05:00:20.0

I'm with the King on this one. No pun intended. Plus I'm surprised the American spelling contains the u.

    2008-11-08 05:04:10.0

No, I've heard Englishmen say doo-al... and a lot of them pronounce "dew" as "doo" but not like as in "do" but as in "you"

    2008-11-08 07:47:23.0

Like the word deuce. It's not supposed to be pronounced "juice"

    2008-11-08 07:47:44.0

Well there's more than one accent in England, maybe both are right.

    2008-11-08 07:52:23.0

Goes to OED (Oxford English Dictionary):

    dual:{sm}dju{lm}{schwa}l

    you: ju{lm}  or   j{schwa}

    dew: dju{lm}

    so, dew = d+you, and then dual = dew+al = d+you+al

    2008-11-08 12:16:49.0

And do (as in to do something) is du{lm}, so there is some sort of j-ish sound that is in dew that isn't in do.  I have never heard anyone pronounce it that way.

    2008-11-08 12:24:42.0

Looks like the OED supports dew-al XP

    2008-11-08 12:40:06.0

    Is Dek still here?

"We say it dew-al in England, and we invented the language..." Well, I'd attribute that to the Normans and Anglo-Saxons... not you, though Tongue out

    2008-11-08 12:46:36.0

Sure, and just as we inherited their language (along with words from the Romans, Greeks, Vikings, Celts etc. too), America and Australia inherited ours by virtue of Britain colonising the crap out of half the planet.

So anyway, if they're pronouncing it funny, that's their problem :P

    2008-11-08 14:13:08.0

Dek is here.... What can I do for ya?

    2008-11-08 20:29:06.0

Just wondering where do "geordie" and "cockney" fit into the "only the English have the pronunciation of the language right" meme? He asks quietly with an "eh?" at the end of his sentence.

    2008-11-09 00:34:13.0

Ahhhh, Lost Soul didn't you mean: Just wonderin wheor dee "geordie" an' "cockney" sonsy intee the "only the english hev the pronunciation iv the language right" meme? he asks quietly wi' an "eh?" at the end iv eez sentence.

    2008-11-09 00:38:25.0

Or perhaps you meant: Gawdon Bennet! Just wonderin' where do "geordie" an' "cockney" buffin'er da "only da English 'ave da pronunciashun ov da language right" meme? He asks quietly wiv an "eh?" at da end ov 'is sen'ence. OK?

    2008-11-09 00:40:04.0

I prefer the second one as far as cockney english goes... the other one sounds new-zealandish

    2008-11-09 04:09:03.0

Personally I don't give a monkeys as long as I can understand what the person is saying.  I do have difficulties with some Geordies and Glaswegians though, especially when they've been on the piss.

    2008-11-09 06:57:54.0

At a recent function, a Glaswegian (who was full of piss) turned to me at the bar and said " ... darts fork united states core"

Took me a while to realise a Status Quo tune was being belted out of the juke box.

    2008-11-09 12:47:25.0

I thought Geordie was a name.... Where is the accent from?

    2008-11-09 16:33:12.0

Geordies come from around Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in north east England.  Newcastle is on the north bank of the river Tyne and Gateshead is on the south bank..

One of the most distinctive structures in Newcastle is the Tyne Bridge which looks like a smaller version of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

    2008-11-09 19:45:33.0

It seems that you're going on about the Celtics, then?

    No, not the team...

    2008-11-09 19:46:36.0

Hey... that Tyne Bridge is like a baby Sydney Harbour Bridge!

    :P

    2008-11-09 19:55:26.0

Yeah, it does quite resemble it, now that you mention it!

    So cute!

    Tongue out

    2008-11-09 19:56:21.0

It was designed by the same person and built by the same firm...(according to Billy Connolly, 'The Big Yin').

    2008-11-09 20:00:53.0

    Ah, I had that suspicion

    2008-11-09 20:01:20.0

    2008-11-09 20:02:26.0

    Which is which?

    :P

    2008-11-09 20:02:41.0

Although, that doesn't always happen, as:

    !=

    2008-11-09 20:03:56.0

On a similar note, French Wikiwiki has much better pictures than English Wikiwiki

    2008-11-09 20:04:44.0

Well, not really a relevant comparison is it?

    2008-11-09 20:08:39.0

    Which is which?

Tyne Bridge on top. Harbour Bridge below..

    2008-11-09 20:08:47.0

    LOL. Yesh...

    One to andro!

    2008-11-09 20:11:11.0

    I'd say.

La tour Eiffel is much taller, and I believe was built before built only ~2 yrs. later.

    2008-11-09 20:11:20.0

I mean more that they're different structures...

    2008-11-09 20:11:40.0

Right, but your statement issued seemed to me more like two structures made by the same person would be similar... not in this case atleast...

Sorry for my late logic, I'm too tired/multi-tasking to even check if it was you who said that...

    2008-11-09 20:21:06.0

I believe construction the Syd Harbour Bridge was begun a few years before the Tyne bridge, but being a much larger construction, was completed a few years later than the Tyne bridge..

    2008-11-09 20:57:39.0

John Bradfield (a Qld'er) designed the Harbour bridge. His original design was scrapped for what it is now. He took his original design to Brisbane where it spans Kangaroo Point to Fortitude Valley/New Farm and is known as the Story Bridge.

    2008-11-09 21:27:01.0

...called such cos it comes with a story?

    2008-11-09 21:41:03.0

Nope. Probably after JD Story. Can't remember what JD's claim to fam ewas but there is also a building at University of Qld named so.

    2008-11-10 01:20:04.0

    Details here ... JD Story

    2008-11-10 01:21:43.0

    Oh cool!

Reminds me of festivals in Singapore, when they light a specific area for each festival

    2008-11-10 03:40:32.0

Hah! That's cool, it looks almost like the building is being stabbed by a mini- Eiffel Tower!

    2008-11-10 04:27:57.0

Apparently the guys from Top gear switched the Blackpool lights on this year.

    2008-11-10 07:17:58.0

Another great reason to go there then!XP

    2008-11-10 15:32:53.0

    Too large! Augh!

    2008-11-10 16:16:36.0

I'm quite ambivalent about Vegas. I know people who really wanna go there, but I have a feeling it not my kinda place.

Would like to visit other parts of Nevada though

    2008-11-11 02:28:29.0

I was once asked what I thought of Las Vegas by my mother. I told her it was "Like Blackpool on drugs" (she wouldn't have understood what Speed is)

    2008-11-11 02:39:52.0

    Haha...

I liked the movie 21, partially set in Vegas. Anyone else see it? Other than that... I have a feeling that it's a really dirty (literally) place.

    2008-11-11 04:59:19.0

I saw it on a plane... Liked the book better.

    2008-11-11 05:06:05.0

21 was ok... I like other Vegas movies better.

Though I can't think of the titles now:-/

    2008-11-11 16:26:01.0

    perhaps you were thinking of "National Lampoons Vegas Vacation" . . . . . . . . . kidding! kidding!Laughing

    2008-11-11 17:44:14.0

    Ewwwwwwwwwwww

    2008-11-11 17:47:38.0

    Haha... Speaking of which.....

    2008-11-11 18:24:40.0

    I don't like cheese.

    2008-11-11 19:45:24.0

America is clearly the Greatest, best country God has ever given man on the face of Earth.

    2008-11-13 17:56:42.0

Damn straight, and don't you forget it.:P

    2008-11-13 19:36:09.0

Interestingly enough, God is purported to have given us Plague, Pestulance, Floods and a shed load of other crap.

    2008-11-14 01:19:01.0

Who is this "God" of which you speak??

    2008-11-14 01:31:16.0

    Ahhhh.... much better;)

    2008-11-14 06:42:24.0

I love how he adds Q.E.D., lol...

I can't wait until the unicorn planet.

    2008-11-14 14:26:53.0
