I has one.
It's pretty awesome... 3GHz Core 2 Duo, 1GB Radeon HD 4850 graphics card, 2GB of the Corsair RAM with the fancy heat sink on the top, all built on top of a motherboard I found that has everything I look for in a motherboard (plenty of SATA and USB ports, room for expansion if I ever want a second graphics card or to upgrade to DDR3 RAM)
So yeah, please commence feeling inferior ![]()
Hmmm... pretty much same as mine, except I have more RAM - 4GB - which I then found out doesn't really mean anything cos Windows can't use all of it.... some mathematical thing.
Anyways, I felt cheated, cos I paid to have more too!
hmmm... I just checked - you've got a faster processor.
Should I be feeling envious?
I don't know... what's the full spec of yours? Then we can settle the age old question of who has the bigger e-peen.
The RAM thing is to do with the limits of a 32 bit OS - 32 bits allows for 2^32 memory addresses, which at one byte per address works out at 4GB, so theoretically you should be able to address 4GB of RAM. However, there are some addresses already reserved for other things by the OS, so you only get 3 point something GB that are actually usable.
If you switched to a 64 bit OS (there are 64 bit versions of both XP and Vista) then you could have up to 16 exabytes of RAM before you had the same problem (1 exabyte = 1024 petabytes, 1 petabyte = 1024 terabytes, 1 terabyte = 1024 gigabytes), which would basically be enough to load all the data there has even been, all into RAM at once. You do however run into compatibility problems sometimes with 64 bit Windows - drivers and programs don't always have 64 bit versions.
Yeah, that!
I got mad because it's essentially false advertising. Cheating people
It's still better than 3GB, you just don't get the full benefit of that last gigabyte..
But I'm paying for the full gig!
You get what I mean?
It's like selling me a 1kg cake, but saying I can't eat more than 1/2
'tis true.
But there's also nothing that can be done about it, it's just a limit inherent to the architecture (so not quite so arbitrary as the cake analogy
)
But that's the thing... TELL me about the limit, and then make it my choice!
You see, with Dell especially, you have the choice to pick from 2,3 or 4 Gigs.
I have only 2 GB (never thought I would say that) but I'm looking into an upscale Sony VAIO 4GB RAM 320 GB HD 2.26 Intel 16.4" Cinematic Widescreen, etc. etc. for Black Friday prices of around 800 USD. My current desktop has lower specs, even though it is also a Sony VAIO and much more expensive...
Sounds nice ![]()
Yeah, but I like to spoil myself when it comes to technology, just so that it isn't obeslete by the time I turn it on...
As far as I can see, the price/performance graph is curved - starts off you only need to spend a little more to get a big improvement, then somewhere in the middle it flips and you have to spend a whole lot more between models for rapidly diminishing gains.
I pitch for that inflection point.
Interesting note - I ran the actual numbers after settling on the HD 4850, and it's sat right on that point... based on a card comparison graph listing their totalled/averaged FPS scores across a range of games and using the lowest prices I could find for the cards on my favourite hardware site.
Yay instincts, they never lead me wrong... except that one time, and all those other times.
Heh. I'm sorry, but that totally reminds me of:

You can tell I'm squeeling like a teenage girl waiting for midnight...
Is it sad that I actually made a graph? ![]()
Yup. Now get a SO, quick!
![]()
But... it's 4 in the morning here, and I'm not dressed (pyjamas, don't worry
) where am I supposed to find a SO?
synth, is there anything in your world that can't be described by xkcd?
WTF is an SO?
Security Officer?
Significant Other
Oh... right....
Hahahahahahaahhahahaha to all comments!
No, xkcd pretty much emulates my life:
CC-Supporting, Velociraptor-fearing, computer-programming, habidashery-doing young me.
I talk to myself all the time... am I my own SO?
*brain explodes*
Hmm I guess I'm the same with C&H
*stab*
Purple shirted eye stabber!
Naw, C&H is funny, but not in the same connects-to-me-and-the-world kinda way.
And Dek... a SO is like a soulmate... I'm hoping not...
When you said C&H, I was thinking of Calvin and Hobbes... and struggling to work out where stabbing came into it ![]()
But yeah, Cyanide & Happiness is cool too.
Hah! I don't believe I've mentioned this, but I have a three volume set of all of the (other) C&H comics EVA! I wish Bill Waterson didn't stop! Except, now, xkcd could be in it, like it was at http://xkcd.com/409/ !!
I have an RSS feed of Calvin and Hobbes... strips from today's date, but some number of years ago, tracing through the series as if they were new.

Oh Noes! No new XKCD!!!!!

Try clearing your cache - you might be refreshing a cached copy of the old one.
Me is SAVED!
I went to the fora, anyways....
It scares me sometimes how much I identify with XKCD....
XKCD FTW!
"EULA"...![]()
Posted in the wrong topic... again... I really need to pay more attention to where I am before I hit ctrl+enter
EULA drives me crazy.
ysat?
Il y a EULA! Run!
Il y a EULA!
I have no idea what that means but it reminds me of the song "Come on Eileen"
End User License Agreements??![]()
YAY!
Again, I still don't know...
I was remarking on Happy's undecipherable comment...
I understood that?
What does it mean?

Wow, I didn't even notice, but 'I will hurt you.' being the only sentence in a post seems to be my generic response tonight.....
