Listening to that, it makes me feel worse than any horror movie I've ever watched!

    Eeeek!

    2008-11-13 22:09:55.0

I like the second one.... lol.

This brings back memories, as the only reason we got rid of our old computer is because of it's combustion...

    2008-11-14 05:24:32.0

Sometimes the fan in my lappy goes at alarming decibels of "fan-noise" and I think what the hell has made you so hot, huh?? Mind of its own that thing...

    2008-11-14 06:43:19.0

My laptop was doing the same... once the fan had gone up in speed it never came down, and the only step up it had was from normal to REALLY LOUD. So it'd be going along fine, then get a little hot and switch into ultra-loud mode, then stay loud forever.

Also, any pressure on the centre of the bottom of the case (including its own weight) would make it produce this horrible rattling sound, like something was stuck in the fan.

So I sent emails to Dell and they sent someone out to fix it. Good ol' extended warranty... got practically a whole new laptop out of that by the time all the parts were replaced - new mobo, new fan and heat sensor, new power connector, new casing (including the mouse buttons) couple of screws that had come loose replaced, couple of rubber feet (where they'd come loose from the bottom) stuck on... 'twas good.

    2008-11-14 09:30:27.0

Niiice.. maybe I should do the same!!

    2008-11-14 09:33:19.0

Dell fans... and here I was hoping mine would be fine... looks like it won't be!

    2008-11-14 13:03:00.0

    HappyWanderer <3 Dell 4eva xD

    2008-11-19 07:51:57.0

My HP is going through an identity crisis - it thinks its a Dell.

    Seriously.

    2008-11-19 09:39:06.0

Really? It's stopped breaking down every single second?

    2008-11-19 13:17:33.0

    *stab*

No, in the system specifications it says the manufacturer is Dell.

    2008-11-19 13:19:40.0

Dell's minions at work again i see...

    2008-11-19 13:20:44.0

LOL!!! *stab*, then you go on talking.

Good thing I wore my kevlar armour today, it adds +15 damage resitance.

    2008-11-19 13:21:41.0

LOL.. it never used to though.. I reformatted my pc earlier this week, and only since then does it think that

    2008-11-19 13:21:56.0

What's funny is that in my opinion Dell's are the ones to break down often. And I'm going to need to reformat my pc AGAIN now, because of some minor/major problems I've been having since.

I said I'd never buy a dell, but I seem to be stuck with a pretend one that does really well at pissing me off.

    2008-11-19 13:26:56.0

What make is the pretend dell?

My dell is bending is that good?

    2008-11-19 13:30:11.0

the pretend dell is a hp dv6746... originally came with vista home premium but i nixed that and installed vista ultimate instead.

    2008-11-19 13:40:27.0

much better. I find it just runs a bit smoother. Also has lots of extra features too.

    2008-11-19 13:44:16.0

sounds goodXP and theres all that hype about Windows 7 atm, Ultimate is kinda overlooked.

    2008-11-19 14:04:22.0

Ultimate was overlooked because consumers see it as an "upgrade" rather than an OS.

Can't wait for Windows 7. We've seen a couple of releases here, downloaded it and ran it on "virtual machine"

It's gonna be the next big thing. Vista is just an in-between-er. We've had Windows 95, 2000, XP... next one in that list is 7. Windows Vista is the Windows 98 equivalent of today.

    2008-11-19 22:19:17.0

    Oh Noes!!

    :O:O:O:O:O

The Viruses, they eated my computer!!!

    2008-11-19 23:34:50.0

Now I definitely need to reformat again  Cry

    2008-11-19 23:35:29.0

Cant you get rid of them?

    2008-11-19 23:54:04.0

Nope. They ate through my registry, disabled registry editing, system restore, host processes, all my usb drives, cd drives, all the external ports on my lappy no longer work, and disabled other various administrator tasks too.

    2008-11-19 23:59:38.0

Shite, do you know what sort of virus it was?

    2008-11-20 00:03:05.0

Symantec picked up Trojan.Pandex, Trojan.Fakeavalert, Trojan.Vundo, a couple of other I cant rememebr that (may or may not) have been deleted, some Downloader.xx files, (which just download more viruses). Cry

They also installed various types of adware too...

    2008-11-20 01:06:25.0

I know its running (invisibly) from my desktop, which is where I save everything because I'm too lazy to put stuff straight into their appropriate folders. It's chewed through most of my files. I'm just glad that I still have a copy of everything from when I did the reinstall a few days ago.

    2008-11-20 01:09:25.0

But alas, there is nothing I can do. :(

    2008-11-20 01:09:41.0

Its also affected the login data, meaning that if I restart my pc I won't be able to log back in. Hence why I am stiill here...

I can't reformat my pc until my mate gets back from the Hunter Valley, he's got all my data and drivers etc on his portable.

So until Saturday, I have one sick puppy on my hands...

    2008-11-20 01:12:36.0

And I don't really mind waiting.. I'm going to reformat it anyway, so I guess it doesnt really matter how much damage is created, right?

    2008-11-20 01:24:32.0

Yeah... since you were gonna reformat it, and had all your data, it's less painful.

How in the world did you pick all those viruses up?

    2008-11-20 02:00:51.0

They hitched a ride with a movie I was downloading Undecided

    2008-11-20 02:01:59.0

The download finished, and I went to watch the avi and as soon as I double clicked on it, they were off and away!

    2008-11-20 02:02:39.0

They were attached to the .avi??

Or were they all in a folder?

    2008-11-20 02:03:12.0

Not too sure.. My computer shows hidden files and folders, and there wasn't anything suspicious that I could see, so they musta jumped on in stealth mode or something...

One good thing, the movie plays fine!!

    2008-11-20 02:04:49.0

(so it wasn't a virus, disguised as an avi file, it was something else completely)

    2008-11-20 02:05:27.0

HAHAHAHA Well, at least it wasn't a total waste of your download quota:P

    2008-11-20 02:05:27.0

It's annoyed me a bit though, because I can't keep the most recent stuff on my pc. There's no way of transferring it off, or saving it to an external device or disk. So it's a bit of a waste, but nothing I can't get again.

Oh, anyone know of a filesharing/hosting website that will allow me to upload a 4.19GB file? I really don't feel like downloading that again via torrent.

    2008-11-20 02:08:35.0

And not wikiupload - it keeps freezing at about 20MB

    2008-11-20 02:09:00.0

    Hmmmm.... Try Gmail?

    2008-11-20 02:09:29.0

    20MB limit there

    2008-11-20 02:09:41.0

im intregued as to what the deleted message was...

    2008-11-20 13:11:14.0

I thought I found a way to save the file. but then I didnt.

    2008-11-20 13:56:12.0

    Windows Live Skydrive, maybe?

Well, you'd have to .rar them, upload them like 5 at a time, and possibly get 2 accounts, but it's worth it Tongue out

    2008-11-20 14:45:05.0

not really. the file i have can't really be split. well, i suppose it can, but I dont want to lose any data just in case

    2008-11-20 23:53:38.0

    Le virus has disappeared!

Wiped my lappy and did the reinstall this morning. The only problem now is that I can't remember what else I had there before. The power supply for my HDD has conveniently decided to give up on me - SO not the right time to do that. At least I know my stuff is safe and backed up - just can't get to it! GAH!!

This week is not my week with computers....

    2008-11-22 18:07:02.0

    Sure sounds like it wasn't!

    2008-11-22 18:36:35.0

I did a reformat/reinstall job recently... was hoping it would fix a problem with the PC (when turning it off it does all the "shutting down" stuff and seems to be all powered down except for the fact that it continues to display "Windows is shutting down" on the screen.

Thinking about, it's probably an issue with the graphics card - it has an additional power connection to the PSU and might be staying alive after the rest of the PC goes dark. Then again, the CPU fan also carries on going until I do a hard shutdown, so maybe not.

    2008-11-22 18:44:55.0

Anyway, my reformat didn't help, just made an annoyance of itself by breaking other things.

    2008-11-22 18:45:19.0

SK - my comp does weird stuff - like restarting when I tell it to shut down/hibernate.

Totally frustrating. Sometimes I go thru 4-5 restarts before it finally shuts down. ARRGGHHH!!!!!

    2008-11-22 19:06:17.0

It's so sad that I'm not in love with my comp.

    2008-11-22 19:06:38.0

I just wish it would go to standby properly... that's my inactive mode of choice (fast resume ftw)

The relative speediness with which the new machine comes to life means its not too much of a worry to switch it on and off properly, but still... it could be faster.

    2008-11-22 19:11:53.0

I lock my computer usually, just so that my brother doesn't get on and fuck with my settings-- if not, I'd go with VistaSleep.

    2008-11-22 19:15:54.0

With Vista, it seems to prefer to hibernate, and so I set it to sleep (standby) when I hit the button...

It just won't listen to me!

    2008-11-22 19:21:08.0

Aww, want me to beat a little sense into it for you?

    2008-11-22 20:20:09.0

Sometimes mine just does whatever it wants to. Last night we were ordering pizza online and the whole thing just shutdown and installed updates. I did not tell it to do that!!

    2008-11-22 20:27:45.0

Oh, that one kept me wondering (and angry) for weeks! It would shut down without any warning while I was doing stuff on it!!

Turns out, the update thingy is set to automatic in Vista, and when it is set at that, it doesn't warn you. Go figure.

    2008-11-23 02:26:10.0

Can't you turn 'automatic updates' off in Vista, like you can in XP?

    2008-11-23 03:55:45.0

Yeah you can.. I had that set up before my reinstalls. Its so frustrating getting everything to the right configuration again...

    2008-11-23 03:58:14.0

    Yeah, you can.

Point was that the default is automatic, but without warnings.

    2008-11-23 03:58:18.0

Yeah, Vista's like that. It tries to make thing 'more friendlier' for the user....

    2008-11-23 03:58:49.0

What it doesn't realise is that the user is ME!

    2008-11-23 03:59:13.0

Actually, a lot of the automatic stuff isn't more user friendly... which is the exasperating part

    2008-11-23 04:00:03.0

And the confirmations! Vista is like a 2-yr-old child going thru the 'Why' phase

    *rolling eyes*

    2008-11-23 04:00:46.0

Still can't wait for Windows 7.

    2008-11-23 04:00:51.0

    Yeh, me too

    2008-11-23 04:00:58.0

Oh yeah, user-control settings were the first thing I changed! After I had to click through like 10 notifications trying to find out how to.

    2008-11-23 04:01:51.0

    hahaha exactly

    2008-11-23 04:02:23.0

And the number of little windows it keeps opening. Like when you want to disconnect from the internet connection, there's like 3 windows to go thru!

    2008-11-23 04:03:42.0

I don't know... I seriously turned it off on the first day (hour) of bringing my lappy home.

    2008-11-23 04:04:49.0

    Yeh, me too.

the outstanding memory I have of meeting this lappie is uninstalling stuff the moment I turned it on. Stoopid

    2008-11-23 04:05:55.0

    LOL me too!

    2008-11-23 04:13:29.0

(wasn't gonna post it here, too many bad words) ....Undecided

    2008-11-23 04:45:40.0

oh damn.. they edited it now...

    2008-11-23 05:08:10.0

I think of Windows Vista as some sort of Windows XP/Windows 7 beta hybrid-thingie.  Personally, I like it.  But then again, it's hard to get mad at an operating system I didn't really have to spend money on. $65 - student discount FTW!!

    2008-11-23 06:02:29.0

Meh. Meh, meh meh. Usually the problem is that the processes that tell you about when you'll be logged out (and believe me, they always do appear) are usually at the bottom of the priority list (in Vista in Task Manager you can set the priority for certain processes), thus making them delayed or unable to pop-up in time. Also, some programs (mostly games) render them invisible to help with your gaming experience. Last time I played CE, it did that to everybody in the room, but they got theirs in enough time.

    2008-11-23 12:04:56.0

That is what you were reffering to, no?

    2008-11-23 12:11:02.0

    Oh yes! Thank you Synth!

    2008-11-23 21:34:28.0

    That's... horrible... stupid Linux ninjas.
