Oh man, this is way too cool...

They plan to throw Paper planes to Earth from Space!

    2008-12-09 16:43:52.0

Ohh, I thought that was random Dek-ness until you put up the link.... Tongue out will read now!!!!

    2008-12-09 16:44:52.0

'Cept they're cheating a little - it isn't standard paper - but oh man.... this is COOL!

    2008-12-09 16:46:20.0

Wow, I really hope I find one!

*2 months from now, walking home.... POW!*

    2008-12-09 16:46:44.0

They must have some sort of bomb on them set by the Japanese....

    2008-12-09 16:47:04.0

    uhhh... yeah...

    2008-12-09 16:47:14.0

That is never going to work...

    2008-12-09 16:47:52.0

It's strange, given that - well... it's just paper.

    2008-12-09 16:48:23.0

Or maybe they're using it to kill pretty whales!

    2008-12-09 16:48:32.0

And it's hard enough to get a paper plane from one end of the office to the other

    2008-12-09 16:48:55.0

I agree, but they must have run many simulations... I mean a project requiring this much time and money....

    XD

    2008-12-09 16:49:04.0

I'm currently looking at the pictures of the plane to try and recreate it hereXP

    2008-12-09 16:51:02.0

I can see you fashioning one right now, dz...dez... deze... deez... dezee... deeze... deezee... Dekz... dkz... dekeze...

    2008-12-09 16:51:04.0

    Ohh, lol!

    2008-12-09 16:51:12.0

But still.. I'm sure the atmosphere is hotter than 200`C

    2008-12-09 16:51:15.0

It's actually really cold up there, Morgan....

    Tongue out

    2008-12-09 16:51:40.0

It all relates to the speed and friction on entry/exit

    2008-12-09 16:52:10.0

It's actually really cold up there

Until you hit the atmosphere, when suddenly Mr Friction comes a calling with a big ol' bucket of really fucking hot

    2008-12-09 16:52:34.0

Exactly SK, thats what I meant...:)

    2008-12-09 16:52:56.0

Sure, but let's not get realistic here....

    A paper plane in space!!

Tell me you've never wanted to throw one there

    2008-12-09 16:53:04.0

but then again... the plane is not all that large, and it wont be travelling all that fast either...

    2008-12-09 16:53:25.0

    so amount of friction =?

    2008-12-09 16:53:38.0

I hope they get video of it.

And yea... I was kinda being sarcastic,...

    2008-12-09 16:56:05.0

Probably depends how high they're dropping them from - if it's all in-atmosphere then it'd fall like paper planes normally do and not get terribly hot because paper never falls that fast (what with all the resistance it generates by flapping about)

If it's been dropped from out of atmosphere, it has a friction-free period to build up speed before it hits friction/heat problems lower down.

    2008-12-09 16:56:07.0

How much force do you think it'd land with?

    2008-12-09 16:57:33.0

If it lands at all, I'd guess not much.

    2008-12-09 16:57:52.0

A poke on the head, or a hole in the roof kinda force?

    2008-12-09 16:57:55.0

The force it'd be able to hit with depends on it's mass and velocity. Low mass means low force no matter how fast it's going. Unless it's going REALLY fast, in which case it would have burned up on entry.

Add in the crumple factor (it'd probably absorb most of it's own impact force rather than passing it into your head like a rigid object would) and I'm thinking not much damage done to skulls.

    2008-12-09 16:59:05.0

It might not be going very fast on entry, but it will once gravity starts working on it. So it will be travelling fairly fast, no?

    2008-12-09 17:00:10.0

    Actually, I take that back...

    2008-12-09 17:00:25.0

Yeah. Once it hits the atmosphere it'll be moving towards it's terminal velocity, which won't be much. To be going fast when it reaches the ground it'd have to work up a goodly amount of speed before reaching the atmosphere.

And gravity is everywhere dek :P

    2008-12-09 17:02:37.0

I wonder if they aim... I mean, they seem pretty confident that they'll hit land...

    2008-12-09 17:05:24.0

I feel special, like I'm in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...

    2008-12-09 17:05:42.0

hmmm I'll personally find it more interesting to send them the other way around (from space... to space).XP That would definitely be the longest (and fastest) flying paper plane ever;) With 0 friction it would keep going (and accelerating) until it gets caught into some attraction field...

    2008-12-09 17:10:37.0

    Some attraction field... like gravity?

    Tongue out

    2008-12-09 17:13:40.0

    ...or a meteor

    2008-12-09 17:17:52.0

    Or some other planet's atmosphere...

    2008-12-09 17:18:17.0

    Or the sun...

    2008-12-09 17:18:38.0

yep, gravitational field to be precise;)

    what about a white horse?

    2008-12-09 17:19:22.0

    oh no...

    2008-12-09 17:19:29.0

oooh... Wonder if it could make it to heaven. Would it gain entry?

    2008-12-09 17:19:55.0

if you consider that it just had a hell of a flight, I would say no.

    2008-12-09 17:20:54.0

So you're saying Hell is the more likely destination?

    2008-12-09 17:21:17.0

    most def

All this talk reminds me of an old nursey rhyme.

    Hey diddle diddle

    The cat on the fiddle

The cow jumped over the moon

    And burn't up on re-entry
