I like the fact that Y2K9 is the same number of characters as 2009 but is much harder to type or pronounce.

Duh! 2009 = 4 numbers.  2k9 = 2 numbers and 1 letter

One less character, takes near enough the same time to say as well...

Although I avoid saying either.  For me 2009 (or 2K9) is "this year".  I rarely have the need to explain to whoever I'm in conversation with what the year is.  If they don't know, I don't care.  Simple as that...!

I remember when we were at school, and had to write the date in full at the top of every exercise book page... It would take me abt 3-4 months to get the year right.

hmmm... wonder why they were so insistent with the dating in the first place?

Obviously it was so that when you come back to those highly important notes later in life, you can arrange them into a proper filing system for easy reference

'cause of course you're going to need to be able to find any random sheet from back then at a moment's notice, what with how useful all the information on there is.

Either that or they figured it was good practice to make sure everyone knew what a date was...

I doubt I've ever looked back at them, although I have kept some of my exercise books. (talking abt primary sch btw)

And they used to make us write them out like 'Thursday, 15th January 2009'. One would expect after 6 months the teachers would think we'd managed to remember how to spell the months and days, but this went on till Pri 3.

dek, we had to do headings and manual margins up to sixth grade.  Yes, we had to manually draw the margins on our papers using a ruler and got dinged on the grade if they weren't 1/2 inch.  Sounds ludicrous in this day and age...

This was in the time before white A4 was popular. Our exam and special assignment papers were printed on a rough brown paper, using a printing machine. Your pencil couldn't be too sharp, or it'd get caught on the uneven fibers and tear it! I hated writing on those

We used to have special unlined slightly grey paper just for math.  It was supposedly that way because it was recycled, which was a novelty at the time.  Maybe they just hadn't worked out the process yet.

Unicode.  A useful way of displaying wierd characters (There is a mixture of Hebrew, Arabic, Greek and Regular in the row of characters).  If the web app only decodes ASCII you can't see them.  Switch it on and then you can.  Simple...

I would like to bring to your attention something I realised a short while ago:

On the 7th of August, at 12:34pm and 56 seconds, the time and date will officially read 12:34:56 7/8/9

(unless you live in America, or some other country that writes its date backwards, then this has already happened for you)

Pretty cool considering it only happens once every 100 years
