Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
Statue of Liberty, New York, USA
Stonehenge, UK
Sydney Opera House, Aust
Taj Mahal, India
Timbuktu, Mali
Ok, I actually typed out that whole list, so you'd better vote!!!
I vote for Petra.... I think it's beautiful and odd - which makes it a winner for me
hagia sophia is BEEEEautiful too...ok ok here's my top 3, hagia sophia, angkor and the great wall.
Cool, can we do three??
Then I pick Petra, Hagia Sophia and I can't decide between Kremlin and Machu Picchu
![]()
i dunno if we can do three....but i want to do three!
given a choice i would have done 5...:s
Ok, since this is a Tangler poll, and we like to get Tangled, just vote for as many as you want![]()
ok in that case i want the acropolis and the colosseum too...
I'm happy with my 4
Ok, here we go. I Pick....................
Pyramid at Chichen Itza, Mexico
Easter Island Statues,
Stonehenge, UK
Pyramids of Giza, Egypt
That's all
1. Pancho's Pizza, 102 Oxford Street, Bulimba.
Alas poor Pancho, I knew him well!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
You're such a clown Ruski!
Ponch Villa
Great Pyramid, Acropolis, Angor Watt (sp) Great Wall, Hagia Sopia is good new one ...Taj maybe
Forget the Taj.... it's disolving under all that acid rain
Really???
yup.... seriously....
Seems that love mightn't be everlasting after all
Yeah, but it's over 300years since they started building it. (not a bad bit of lovin)
Oh! I didn't realise the 'eternal' in 'eternal love' was conditional
hehehehe
Don't mind me, I don't know what I'm talking about
it's too late at night for sensible thinking.
I vote against the Taj Mahal cause to me it's a symbol of Cruelty rathar than love
if the rumours about it are true
and i vote for Pyramids - cause it's the most ancient
Then again!!
Damn!!! I can't decide
Stonehenge?? is that a joke?? can anyone who has seen the Alhambra vote for Stonehenge or Acropolis?
My vote for ALHAMBRA, Angkor and machu pichu.
aman, that depends on what rumours you are talking about.
Petra looks nice, other than that, I would vote for Pyramids of Giza, the Great Wall and maybe stonehenge
On second thought, can I vote for them all?
if the rumours about it are true
I tend to agree with fendetestas abt stonehenge.... Not because I don't think its remarkable, but it has too many unanswered questions....
Then again.... that makes it a certified 'wonder'
I don't think the Opera House can be on there. It is well-recognised and beautiful but compare it to the Great Wall and it just doesn't make the cut. I also think the Eiffel Tower can't be - same reasons as our icon.
The Alhambra gets no vote from me because we had an issue with the ticketmaster and they would not let us in. Grrr. Another story. Another day. No. It's a wonder, I just wish I had gotten past the 'front door'.
The Great Wall gets my vote.
The thing with the tower is that it is/was the first of its kind. It introduced humankind to a whole new perspective just because of its height.
Hark! I hear the call of post-modernity...
i beleive the cruelty aman was talking abt was the fact that the hands of the builders of the taj were cut off so that they will never build anything as beautiful ever again...
and dek's got a point too...ppl did die building the pyramids...*shrug*
personally i think the taj mahal is a bit overrated...i dunno...the whole symbol of love thing is just a bit too diabetes-inducing.
were there any other rumours behind the construction of the taj mahal that i might not be aware of?
No Swinger, I think that's what we both were referring to.... at least I was
True people did die building the Pyramid. But it was a clear dictinction of the power divide - being built as tombs for the Pharoahs. who cares about the little people was the thought of the day.
I think the Taj bothers me more - cause it was supposed to be about LOVE ------ which should not ideally include causing harm to others. Even though there might not be any scientific evidence of craftsmen having thier hands or thumbs cut, Emperors of that have been known for being cruel - so it wouldn't need much of a stretch of imagination.
What's the diff? Why would the Sultan care for the little ppl?
Well, the world decided, and here are the new 7:
The Great Wall of China, Rome's Colosseum, India's Taj Mahal and three architectural marvels from Latin America were among the new seven wonders of the world chosen in a global poll released on Saturday.
Jordan's Petra was the seventh winner. Peru's Machu Picchu, Brazil's Statue of Christ Redeemer and Mexico's Chichen Itza pyramid also made the cut.

Woo hoo!!! Petra made it!!![]()

This was a very sad list of predictable candidates. Not one from sub-Saharan Africa save the blindingly obvious. Now this is a building that should have made the list.

Djenne's Grand Mosque (1905) is the Largest Mud-Brick Building in the World, Djenne, Mopti, Mali
I can't believe none of Canada's Giant Nickle, or the Giant Easter Egg, or the Giant Goose even made the voting list.
I don't think too many people now about Mali at all.... let alone that it has a wonder like this. Timbuktu is of course a UN World Heritage site.... on my list of places to go....
The contest was about ease of memory recall and popularity -- not greatness of course....
Mesa Verde in the US should have been in there somewhere as well
Yup. It's recall: The Alhambra is wonderful, but it's not the only piece of architecture of it's kind in Spain.
But what is the point of these lists then, if not to raise some sort of awareness of great human endeavours?
We might as well each have our own list with No1 being our homes: after all they are easy to recall.
Why on earth that tourist attraction and rusty piece of scrap the Eiffel Tower made it to the short list defeats me - how about the London Eye Ferris wheel if that made it?
Is it just longevity? What about The White Tower of London at nearly 1000 years then? or Windsor Castle at eight hundred?
Cultural then? Sydney Opera House - iconic it may be, but it's one of the most over-rated and over sold pieces of architecture on earth. And personally I think it's no better than average in appearance.
Oh, and it wasn't completed to the architect's spec's, so it's not even what it 's supposed to be.
What about the Guggenheim in Bilbao? Or better yet Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona?
I was going to provide images for illustration, but there is Google.
But How about this for a still standing building? It almost never makes these lists yet it is a religious, cultural, architectural and historical wonder, and standing since 125AD, The Pantheon, Rome:

Exterior

Interior.
It is I believe something like the oldest free standing domed building on earth.Older than Sophia, and still in use as a place of worship, unlike Sophia.
^ I thought Sophia was a bit of a let down for that very reason.
Side on, the Opera House looks like an school of albino sharks on a feeding frenzy. There are some views of it that remind me of Darth Vaders breathing apparatus. Don't mind it though.
Petra is a worthy wonder. Fabulous place.
Though how Pancho's Pizzeria did not make the cut rermains a mystery.
Outrageous!! We demand a recount!![]()
hi how r u
Good thanks
is Taj mahal in one of the wonders
Are you there?
Yes, the Taj Mahal did make it
Are you talking to anyone in particular?
Not really
A free for all
Quite
I came to know some of them taken out
Taj Mahal was built in a way that it would resist even during the earthquake
Very cool
There is a wood under the monument submerged in water which makes the foundation strong
I am new to this discussion. Could you please introduce yourself
Im Mike
Sure. My name is Chris Hawkins, previously known as Ambition on Tangler
