isnt there meant to be one colour that contains some kind of aphrodesiac...

probably a hoax or an urban legend or something like that, but kinda worth a mention nonetheless

    2007-03-18 18:24:31.0

Really??? Never heard that one before....

    2007-03-18 18:24:55.0

    Did someone mention chocolate?

    2007-03-18 20:24:19.0

You should try Reese's Peanut Butter Cups from the States.  The candy shop in Castle Towers  in Castle Hill has them.  They're the best PB and Chock candies I think.

    Good Link here! Yum!

    2007-03-18 20:31:55.0

See dizzy!!!! there are plenty of ppl out there with immaculate taste (ie. love PB and choc) *shakes head in despair at dek*

    2007-03-18 20:35:09.0

Dunno, crunchy frog might be good right now.

    2007-03-18 20:37:41.0

I'll stick to my Mocha for a choco boost

    2007-03-18 20:43:34.0

    2007-03-18 20:46:17.0

I like blue and yellow the least

Maybe cos we don;t associate blue stuff with food. Like flowers. They are never that sort of blue.

    2007-03-18 20:48:18.0

I once had a blue cocktail I really liked....

    2007-03-18 20:49:53.0

Then maybe you can tell me - Where does the blue colour come from?

    2007-03-18 21:03:51.0

The dark chocolate M&M's have my vote. I like the red ones...

    2007-03-19 06:48:21.0

    Reese's Pieces? What's that?

    2007-05-26 03:59:39.0

It's like an M&M but with Reeses Peanut Butter inside Explanation Here

I must say my Favorite Australian Candy is Violet Crumble

... I can't wait to visit Australia one day:)

    2007-05-26 04:06:12.0

I have to admit.... I've never had it

    2007-05-26 04:29:01.0

I like crunche bars better than Violet Crumble-The chocolate is sweeter on the crunchie.  Both are similar on the inside.  Dek, there are a few places around Sydney that sell US Chockies.  There's a place in Castle Towers, in Castle Hill, or in Leura (good excuse for a lunch in the Blue Mountains).  I've seen most of the Reeses range there.  I'll bring you some when I come back to Sydney.

    2007-05-26 08:35:15.0

    Cool! Thanks Erik....

    Tho I should say this - I'm not a fan of PB^_^'

    2007-05-26 08:47:11.0

Yeah, PB is really an american thing, I think.  I do find that the Sanitarium No Added Sugar/Salt PB in Australia is pretty good, almost as good as the organic stuff here.

It's funny (I know from personal experience) to watch my fellow countrymen eat Vegemite for the first time.  If you're raised on PB and Jelly sandwitches, you'll take a huge dollop of Vegemite and spread it on toast and proceed to gag.  Need to learn that it's thinly, not thickly, spread onthe bread.

    2007-05-26 08:54:04.0

hahaha yeah.... I couldn't believe how it tasted when I first had it.... so not what I was expecting!

Meanwhile, I remain unbiased in my dislike for spreads.... I dislike vegemite as much as pb

    2007-05-26 09:00:39.0

My mates in Qld thought it was really funny, too.

PB &J on a bagel is a good, fast brekky.  That's what I had this AM.  Hornsby needs good bagels!  The store bought ones at Woolies and Coles suck.

    2007-05-26 09:06:58.0

hehehe.. same goes for real Marmite (as opposed to that Vegemite stuff) - spread it thin

unless your my dad, in which case cover your toast an inch deep in the stuff

    2007-05-26 12:32:39.0

Dek how can you mention vegemite in the same sentence asf peanut butter... and I thought you had good taste.....

I've always had the impression that each society takes one food to show how different (tough ?) they are to the outside world and makes it a food to be craved... raw fish for Japan, kimchee for Korea, Ducks Feet for China, Hagis for the Scots, Head Cheese for the Brits..... and of course Vegemite for the Aus.

I was actually brought up on the idea that Marmite was good for you... but I quickly put it in the same taste category as penicillin in my categorization scheme (which  when I was young was to say if  parents say its good for you, you know its going to be bloody bad tasting...)  and no matter how thin you spread it ... its still Vegemite or Marmite... yet for our decendents it will likley be a staple....uggh. abricbit

    2007-05-26 17:14:43.0

Head cheese? If I know of the food you're talking about, I don't know it by that name

Besides, there's nothing wrong with marmite - just ask our dog ;)

Or me.. or my dad.. maybe its an acquired taste, but enough people like it that we can't all be crazy

    2007-05-26 17:25:14.0

There is a distinction between normal Peanut and Reeses Peanut Butter... Reeses Peanut Butter Tastes better.

    2007-05-26 17:32:14.0

SK -- probably a Canadian name invention then.... similarly I found it very strange to travel to the USA and have people say how much they loved "Canadian Bacon"  (I never knew our bacon was different from theirs!)  but it turned out what they called Canadian Bacon we call Back Bacon.... so off to see If I can find a description of Head Cheese that will make sense to you

    2007-05-26 17:35:10.0

In England, head cheese is referred to as brawn, in Scotland as potted heid (potted head of a cow, pig or sheep; the similar potted haugh/hough made from the shin of the animal). ...a terrine of meat from the head of a calf or pig  (sometimes a sheep or cow)  that would not otherwise be considered appealing. It may also include meat from the feet and heart .  It is usually eaten cold or at room temperature as a luncheon meat . It is sometimes also known as soucemeat, particularly if pickled with vinegar.

A favorite of my Grandfather (Welsh/Scot)....

    2007-05-26 17:43:27.0

eugh.. don't think I've heard of that one, or eaten it

    2007-05-26 17:54:30.0

Of all the items on the list I gave, its the only one that I haven't ventured  multiple tries at;)

    2007-05-26 18:00:19.0

My favourite M&M colour is teal...

doesn't translate that well here.... (the colour of the NHL team Sharks.)

    2007-05-26 18:09:36.0

When you eat your smarties do you eat the red ones last?  Who sang the song with this line?

    2007-05-26 18:10:28.0

    Ok heres the verse:

    2007-05-26 18:11:55.0

    Sing the Smarties Song!

    When you eat your Smarties,
Do you eat the red ones last?
Do you suck them very slowly,
    Or crunch them very fast?
    Eat that candy-coated chocolate,
But tell me when I ask,
    When you eat your Smarties,
Do you eat the red ones last?

    2007-05-26 18:12:01.0

I don't think it was just an ad... I think the first two lines came from a song from the early '60's

    2007-05-26 18:12:39.0

... quick search of the web shows nothing about a song other than the ad jingle itself...so I guess the ad imprinted itself more than I imagined   (but I still like the copy cat M&Ms better) and Peanut M&M's are in a class by themselves!

    2007-05-26 18:47:59.0

Dek how can you mention vegemite in the same sentence asf peanut butter... and I thought you had good taste.....

    I do.... I dislike em both:P

And I LOOOOOVE kim chi! Korean food is right up there on my favs list

    2007-05-26 21:43:33.0

    Don't think I've ever seen a teal M&M!:O

Oh wait.... were they those tiny ones?

    2007-05-26 21:44:01.0

I like everything on my list with the exception of the head cheese (and Vegimite/Marmite which although I will eat if offered have not sought out in a couple decades).

    2007-05-26 21:44:13.0

No the teal is one of the 22 (23?) standard colours that you can order from M&M website I think (I know yoiu can get them at the stores in Las Vegas and Orlando.

You can also order M&M with your own message written on them....

    2007-05-26 21:45:41.0

    Ah.....

Well, I really don't mind the raw fish once I got over my brain-block.... Ducks feet I've never had, but I love duck, so how bad could it be?

Haggis I really wanna try, after andromeda showed me the recipe

Head cheese.... no idea. Would have to try it

    Vegemite.... bleh

    2007-05-26 21:46:28.0

Oh! yeah, I saw that when I started this topic... so much M&M madness....

I mean.... how much can you market something smaller then my thumbnail?

    2007-05-26 21:47:25.0

Haggis is one of the great foods of the world.... You;ll have to find a Scot so that you can celebrate it in its full glory at a Burns Supper

    2007-05-26 21:49:19.0

re: I mean.... how much can you market something smaller then my thumbnail?

If I recall correctly (many years since I was in thier store) it is 4 stories and over 20,000 square feet in LV... although much of that is taken up with M&M dispensers, hats, sun glasses, purses etc....

    2007-05-26 21:50:43.0

    Goodness me.... that's nuts

    2007-05-26 21:53:07.0

    *goes looking for a Scot*

    2007-05-26 21:53:21.0

As odd as it may sound, I've never heard of Vegimite or Marmite.  Next time I visit one of Florida's larger cities, I'll find an import store . . . I did like an Aus. candy named "HoneyComb" when I tried it in a store near Los Angeles.

    2007-05-27 02:01:34.0

    Fom Wikipedia

Marmite /ˈmɑːmaɪt, mɑːˈmiːt/ is a British savoury spread made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing.

It is a sticky, dark brown paste with a distinctive, powerful taste that polarises consumer opinion. This is reflected in the company's marketing slogan: "Love it or hate it" ..........

    2007-05-27 02:16:18.0

hate it being the key phrase there....

    sace your pennies MoshJosh:P

    2007-05-27 03:33:01.0

See - "distinctive taste", doesn't say anything about it being disgusting

I think it might be one of those things that you only like if you've known and eaten it from a  young age... from the sounds of it it's definitely an acquired taste

    2007-05-27 14:31:07.0

To me, even the description sounds disgusting.  "Love it or hate it?"  Wow.

     Now I'm really interested. XP

    2007-05-27 16:17:53.0

If you do decide to try it, I would suggest putting it on toast

    mmm.. toast

Best way of doing it is to spread it fairly thick with butter when its still hot from the toaster so the butter melts and soaks into the top layer of the toast, but leaves some half-melted bits on the top, then spread Marmite on it thinly and evenly so it mixes with the butter

Then eat it while its still warm (its still ok-ish when its started going cold, but not nearly as good)

    2007-05-27 16:49:41.0

Yes, the butter trick has had people saying how wonderful crab and lobster are for many many years too.:P

    2007-05-27 17:01:40.0

    uummmmm..... seafood + butter

    *drool*

    2007-05-27 17:09:10.0

    corn-on-the-cob +  butter

    popcorn + butter

    Sourdough Bread + butter

see its the butter that's magic.... not everything else.... they exist soley as delivery mechanisms....

    2007-05-27 17:15:33.0

    hahahahhahaha

    ummmmm..... butter....

    2007-05-27 17:33:51.0

anybody up for some "MAP-O-SPREAD"... direct from Montreal? ... Now you can't beat that.XP

    2007-05-28 02:46:26.0

    What's that??

    2007-05-28 06:23:54.0

yeah.. butter enhances the flavour of all kinds of stuff

including marmite, go try some! :P

    2007-05-28 06:38:50.0

    No! Never!!
    Bleh....

I think another reason I won't try it is that it's made of some form of beef extract right?

    2007-05-28 16:59:20.0

No there is no beef -- its  Yeast extract -- originally from the BEER making process !

    2007-05-28 17:00:18.0

hmmmm.... so which one has the beef?

    2007-05-28 17:02:31.0

I tells ya, none of these spreads will every beat the BEST - kaya!
    Now that is gooooood stuff

    2007-05-28 17:03:06.0

Did you just ask "Where's the beef?"XP  .... not in either Vegimite or Marmite as far as I know...... but I don't have ajar to cehck the list of ingredients.

    2007-05-28 17:04:06.0

I'm not familiar with Kaya...  I'll look for it the next time I'm at an asian market  in town.... what's it made from?

    2007-05-28 17:05:00.0

Ok  I see its Coconut Egg Jam .... that does sound interesting... will definitely give it a try!

    2007-05-28 17:06:32.0

I'm fairly sure one of them have beef extracts....

ooohhh Kaya is sooooo good... made of coconut (I think) Eggs and sugar (probably)

    2007-05-28 17:06:47.0

We only get the ones commercially made here, but the real pleasure lies in the homemade ones, which you buy when still warm and spread

Maaaan.... I've gotta get me some soon

According to the history of Vegemite page : It is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract (a by-product of beer manufacture) and various vegetable and spice additives.

According to the  Marmite web site which also includes a page for the Marmite Fan Club, it is made up of these ingredients..

    • Yeast Extract
    • Salt
    • Vegetable Extract
    • Niacin
    • Thiamin
    • Spice Extracts
    • Riboflavin
    • Folic Acid
    • Celery Extract
    • Vitamin B12

No beef in either... you must be thinking of something else?

    2007-05-28 17:12:46.0

    Yesh.... sorry.....
    the mites confuse me

    2007-05-28 17:22:23.0

No wonder you guys like it.... anything to do with beer right?;)

    2007-05-28 17:22:48.0

just a mite confusing... but I think Promite is just a lesser known brand: Promite is made from vegetables and yeast extract, and is high in various B vitamins. (according to Wikipedia)...

And trust me... none of the 'mites is a substitute for beer!

    2007-05-28 17:43:11.0

    Could this be it:

Bovril is the trademarked name of a thick, salty beef  extract, sold in a distinctive, bulbous jar. It is made in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire  and distributed by Unilever UK.

    2007-05-28 17:46:16.0

An interesting historical note (according to Wikipedia) from Nov 2004 to 2006, the beef extract in Bovril was removed and replaced with a Yeast Extract ...due to fears of BSE and the freeze on Beef exports from the UK ...

    2007-05-28 17:56:33.0

hmmmm.... why does my neighbour always tell me I can't eat it then?

Maybe to stop me stealing her kids' sandwiches.....

    2007-05-28 18:03:57.0

Can't help you with that !  But again, if you don't already have a taste for it, your first taste is probably your last  so stealing the kid's meal shouldn't be a concern;)   Tell you what ... you can settle it by reading the list of ingredients on the bottle and let us know!

    2007-05-28 18:06:43.0

Yeah, I decided to do that after my search attempts yielded nothing
I shall report back once I've raided her pantry

    2007-05-28 18:19:50.0

We should have a group rant session.... we say ready, set, GO! and everyone just starts ranting

Yeah. Forget about those nancy pants laughter workshops. We want something loud, that works!

    2007-05-30 18:18:52.0

PB &J on a bagel is a good, fast brekky.  That's what I had this AM.  Hornsby needs good bagels!

Erik - I have an idea. There is an empty shopfront on the old side of Hornsby on the Pacific Highway. We could start a cafe. I was thinking about it yesterday. It would need to be renowned for great coffee and fresh pastries. We could buy it all in. Bagels should also be on the menu. That milk bar next door is an opportunity wasted,.  (The empty premises are where the bike shop used to be)

    2007-05-30 18:25:06.0

I love vegemite. As Super King suggests - on toast with lots of butter and the thinest scrape of vegemite, served warm..

    2007-05-30 18:26:05.0

Hmmm another disappearing image from one of my posts... there should have been an image in my post immediately prior to Kasta's Rant Rave Request... one more point for your data set Tangler folks abricbit ghost

    2007-06-07 20:03:52.0

    2007-06-11 20:09:58.0

Come to think of it Mohamed, there is/was a great sweet shop on Talat Harb St, Cairo, just a little way down from McDonalds. You should check it out. They had chuppa chups so I reckon even money M&M's being there too.
