Kiva.org is a great site where you can invest and pool money with other people from around the world to invest in small projects. The key thing is that you invest, not donate. The money is a loan. i consider this to be the most sustainable way to support the world.
I put $50 into Kiva and split it between two business six months ago. One is half repaid and the other is fully repaid.

The main charity I support is St Judes School in Arusha, Tanzania . It is run by Gemma, an Australian lady who is doing a remarkable job. 6 years ago the school didn't exist. Now thanks to Gemma's determination, massive amount of commitment and work from local people and volunteers and donations from people from around the world, there is a school for 500 primary school kids and a school for 500 high school kis being built. It's amazing. I really encourage you to visit their site and sponsor a kids education.
The best thing about St Judes is that they have a 50 year vision. The kids they are teaching now will end up teaching the kids who will change Tanzania significantly.

I kind of think that anyone in Australia has the opporutnity to do anything with their lives if they set their minds to it. Yes, I say that from a privelidged position, but priviledged doesn't make it always true. It helps. But that says that i's possible from any position.
Key point is sustainability. How do you change the 'system' so that all kids want to live for tomorrow and love life.

What does everyone think about the United Nations now?
I'm not sure if it has changed or not, but when I first read the United Nations Charter , it felt very passive. I felt it was aiming for 'tolerance' and not something better like cooperation and, dare I say it, synergy. As I re-read it now, it seems better, and the Charter of Human rights is pretty good, but the key thing is how it's actioned. Anyone can write a document.

I just got directed to Oxfam Unwrapped
as a wedding gift for a friend and it's a great idea. You pick from about 100 charitable acts between $5 and $5,000 each and give them to a friend as a present. We chose some things that reflected us;
