How demoralising. You think they could contribute something whithout expecting something (eg. media) in return.

I saw Gemma on Australian Story the other night and was amazed at what she has achieved. She is a juggernaut and her determination is staggering as is her conviction. She won't take no for an answer and look at what she has done.

Those moments must be common for people visiting countries in crisis (should I do something?). There was a scene in The Constant Gardener the other night (movie about pharma companies using Africans as guinea pigs for TB trials in exchange for HIV meds) and someone wanted to give a lift to a family walking to a clinic, a night's walk away. They had a sick baby. The conversation went along these lines... "If we help them we should help everyone else. We should not interfere in their lives." So they did not take them.

What a good idea Mick... instead of just throwing aid money at causes identified by outsiders.

  • Pharmaceuticals

They'll manage to manufacture pills which hydrate the body, so that we
don't need to drink, and then they'll charge the poor living in the
    harshest climates the most

I really wish that sounded far-fetched...

That's one of the things I find hard about donating. You create a symbiosis in a way and then what happens when you cannot continue? I worry about that a bit.

Is this the Malaysian program Dek?

Why can't I see the 'controversial' picture?

I just don't know where to start on that one Mick. Let me come back to it another day.

I kind of think that anyone in Australia has the opporutnity to do anything with their lives if they set their minds to it.

Mmm. I see what you are saying but you and I have been brought up with a mindset that allows us to see opportunities. We have also had many more opportunities. Understanding your own potential and the opportunities in the world, as well as having the emotional and vocational toolbox to act on those things is a luxury that not everyone has.

Even I would not be a trained journalist now if I had not finished my one year Grad Dip in 1997. The year after they introduced up-front fees. I was in no position to afford them. I found that quite unsettling. As someone who had completed the course and saw a pathway to employment, I felt the tenuous nature of that later, when they made it the domain of the rich.

  • Why donate?

Yes. Charity is big business. A friend of mine copywrites for a company which has a long list of clients - charities - it is a marketing phenomenon. I do wonder about how much money filters down....
