The main charity I support is St Judes School in Arusha, Tanzania . It is run by Gemma, an Australian lady who is doing a remarkable job. 6 years ago the school didn't exist. Now thanks to Gemma's determination, massive amount of commitment and work from local people and volunteers and donations from people from around the world, there is a school for 500 primary school kids and a school for 500 high school kis being built. It's amazing. I really encourage you to visit their site and sponsor a kids education.

The best thing about St Judes is that they have a 50 year vision. The kids they are teaching now will end up teaching the kids who will change Tanzania significantly.

I 1/2 sponsor a child which is not cheap, but provides uniforms, books, lunch, teachers, and a school. It's well worth it. In return I get monthly reports and lots of great things like pictures, cards, notes etc. It's wonderful.

    Help a good school in Africa;

The School of St Jude needs your help!

After 5 years of pleading, we are daring to hope that the dreams of our students and their families could come true!

We have started construction of the proposed boarding school (see pictures)-but we cannot complete it without your help.

    BEFORE                                                                       SOON!

With your help,  we hope to build and fit out dormitories dining rooms and bathrooms. We then hope to assemble 400 beds, 400 mosquito nets, and provide a huge number of new local staff to supervise all the children who will benefit from this.

And the benefits are priceless! The students are so excited about having:

    1.       Three nourishing meals a day

    2.       Electricity and regular showers and toilets close by

    3.       A bed and mossie net all of their own!

    4.       Someone to help with their homework

    5.       A 5 minute walk to school as opposed to an hour walk just to the bus stop!

    BEFORE                                                           SOON !

However we need your help if the boarding school is to open in time for the new school year.

From the picture below you will see eight suggested packages to help fulfill our kids dreams.

PLEASE email me if there is a package/s you are willing to support- and we will give you lots in return by means of feedback and thanks.

If you want to go straight to the place at our website for payment on the below packages then go to the following link:

Looking forward to hearing from you!!    Gemma

    Sponsorship package overview

       1. Provide a healthy sleeping environment ($150 = bed and mosquito net. 400 needed)
              * Purchase a bed bunk mosquito net to enable a far healthier sleeping environment than using a shared mattress in an mosquito infested open-house
       2. Ensure a safe study environment ($500 = desk and chairs for 8 children, 96 sets needed)
              * Supplying a study room where homework can be completed away from the distracting commitments of home-life children’s duties enables a unique edition to school life.
       3. Encourage play and recreation ($300 = 1 double swing set, 30 needed)
              * Safe, dedicated play areas are a rare luxury for Tanzanian children, yet play is essential for development of social skills and learning. Sponsorship of a swing-set or slide will provide fun for boarders for many years to come.
       4. Let boarders have a sit down meal ($500 = 1 table, seating + cutlery for 16 kids, 48 needed)
              * Buying, cutlery, dishes, tables and chairs can allow St Jude children to receive an evening meal in safe and clean conditions.
       5. Ensure safe electric wiring and adequate lighting ($300 = fits out  1dorm, 96 units needed)
              * Fires and burns caused by candles, charcoal stoves and kerosene lamps are a real risk for St Jude’s children trying to study at home. Safe electric wiring, energy-efficient lamps and water heaters allow children to study and live in safety.
       6. Prevent disease and ailments with adequate and environmentally friendly sanitation ($5,000 = 1 bathroom for 32 kids, 24 needed)
              * Clean water, bathing facilities and modern toilets are essential to prevent disease and contamination in Africa and to reduce environmental damage.
       7. Construction of an dormitory unit, ($10,000 = providing 1 rooms for 8 children, 96 needed)
              * Why not make an individual donation to provide a distinct part of the new boarding facility by paying for construction of an entire dormitory unit.
       8. Allow St Jude boarders to benefit from a nutritious evening meal ($1000 = 1 industrial cooker unit, 12 needed)
              * Buying industrial cookers to allow St Jude children to receive a healthy and hot evening meal.

I saw Gemma on Australian Story the other night and was amazed at what she has achieved. She is a juggernaut and her determination is staggering as is her conviction. She won't take no for an answer and look at what she has done.

Her personal story is also lovely. She has two beautiful children and a wonderful husband who helps her achieve her dreams.

Her mum appeared to be doubtful of her daughter's role in the education of African children and her marriage to an African. I thought that was a shame. Gemma has so much happiness and hope inside of her. Maybe one day her mum will be able to accept her choices.

Hey Dek. I could contribute $150. Maybe we could go halves and buy the swing set?

    Or the mossie nets...

    2007-06-20 18:45:32.0

    Sure! Good idea Kasta!

I vote for the mozzie nets

    2007-06-20 18:48:36.0

    XP

    This is great!

    2007-06-20 18:56:06.0

I like it because we know exactly what it will be used for. I also have absolute faith in Gemma's work.

    2007-06-20 18:57:19.0

Yeah, it's the same with MSF, which is why I try to help em out whenever I can

    2007-06-20 18:58:01.0

As I have said before I support World Vision, of which I have mixed opinions. BUT. I am going to keep it up because I know the boy I sponsor needs my help and I am not about to take it away.

    2007-06-20 19:00:35.0

    One each then Dek?

    2007-06-20 19:01:40.0

Hey Dek. They have a login for donors. You might want to do it yourself and then you'll also receive updates. What do you think?

    2007-06-20 19:03:03.0

That's ok Kasta, you go ahead.... You and Mick can keep me updated then!:P

Actually, I'm not one for updates.

    2007-06-20 19:04:25.0

    OK. No probs.

    2007-06-20 19:15:28.0
