Every coin has two sides. I'm sure there's folks out there who'd love to tell my why Library 2.0 is a bad idea. This place is for you!

On second thought, if you thought Library 2.0 was a bad idea, you might not be hanging out on a site like, say, tangler. Now there's a dilemma.

I think it's more of an interesting cultural exercise about experiences... About how humans interact with each other, technology and knowledge.

Library as a cultural experience, rather than a place to experience stagnant objects...

True - I really love the idea of library as cultural experience... even taking it as far as community center or "Public University." Maybe the root of our fears for the future of libraries comes from a fear that a building, a Library, is not the best venue for spontinaity and creativity and sharing...that all seems to have moved to the Net. Can Library exist without Building?

I'm sure we could have both....

On the one hand, I feel so bombarded by stuff that i like to go to libraries and just be.... I also like being surrounded by books and the quiet, slow environment

On the other hand, I'd love it if they had more stuff to keep me coming back for more than just books

My uni library used to have exhibitions, and I used to check those out in my free time.... I enjoyed that

I think that duality is something libraries struggle with... for the folks in Denmark, they had the ground floor (in the US this is where the DVDs and CDs are usually held) filled with these community events and I presume the upper floors were still available for quiet study and reflection. So many of our public libraries in the US are really run down relics...they're not at all the gorgeous dark-wooden gleaming places of imagination. They're funky old 60s and 70s buildings with old furniture... not terribly inspiring. Of course, if you've got the money and can renovate, you're all set! But some of these we'll have to make relevant FIRST so the government will give us the money to do a renovation. After all, why spend money on something no one uses?

Yeah, I think it's pretty much the same here.... I mean, the libraries might not be old and run down, but they aren't the dark wood, leather chairs kind either

It's really funny about the dark wood thing, because in the 70s/80s, libraries pitched all that "traditional stodgy" furniture/decor for a more "modern" feel. Which of course got horribly outdated. And then Barnes & Noble adopted our old dark wood furniture look and all our patrons went there! Gah! What were we thinking!

    2007-05-23 19:03:38.0

    hahahaha yeah....

modern look = not very welcoming

For sure... I love the old dark wood of a nice old fashioned library. When I think "library" thats what I see and what I want to see when I visit! But I also want to have a more modern/community focused component, too.

    2007-05-23 19:22:05.0

yeah, i'd want the same things
