1. Get paper
2. Find blade
3. Cut

My artistic talents lie in other fields, I'm not good at drawing or painting, which I believe you would need for this type of thing.

As dek pointed out, one need paper, good blade (a craft scapel is vital), and cut!

TRICK is to

Design you design on a seperate sheet, i would google the images then lay it out , print it and then figure out how i want it to "animate" make notes!

Basically you are NOT going to cut the whole shape out but leave hinges on the paper (butterfly think spine, think tittering etc)

Then with the draft paper over the actual paper, paper cliped all round, cut where you want to cut (over cutting mat, as it preserves the point of your scapel)

Than fold you graphics upwards or however you need it to be. If your paper is rather thick, rub the paper hinges with a blunt round point (usually there is one on the other end of the scapel, this comes into the area of paper tooling a little)

Seriously one just needs to be well organised to carry out simple paper craft, being meticulous helps

but its's quite possible, SEE the crypt was made from the paper cut then folded upwards beneath it.
