Have decided to start up a new topic as a place to share things I find as I don't have a blog I actively use, and this is the only web-based forum I regulary post to, and I'm sick of posting things on facebook.

Anyhow, I'll begin with this - A webcomic I like, theDogHouseDiaries.com has done a mash-up of two of my other favourite webcomics - Cyanide and Happiness, and xkcd..

  • Morgan's "Outdoors-y" Year

Begins with me and Lexie taking a trip down the Adelaide River to do the original Jumping Crocodile tour.

For those that don't know, Lexie is my beloved little car, which (in lieu of my proposal to buy a 4wd this year which I will call "The Explorer") has now been dubbed the "mini-explorer."

Of course I didn't send the poor little thing down in the water - it would have either drowned or become a new nesting place for all the crocodiles - so I parked and took a cruise on the Adelaide River Queen:

The boat takes you up the river and the great tour operators we had today - Jim and Wendy - tell you all about the river and it's surrounds, and all the crocodiles that live there. And there are heaps of crocs!!!

They attach large pieces of meat on a large sort of "fishing rod" and as the boat goes down the river the crocs come out and have a chomp, sometimes leaping right up out of the water! They are in the middle of their mating season, so apparently they have been coming up to the boats more than usual, either threatened by our presence, or just looking to get some extra tucker in their pregnant bellies.

We also saw some great eagles (below) and some Kites as well, which came down to flog some of the food the guides brought along.

The original Adelaide River Croc-Jumping Tour has been going for over 25 years. It is located about an hour and a half out of Darwin, along the Arnhem Highway, and costs $35 per person. Here is the official website if you want to check it out.

After leaving the Adelaide River Crossing on the Arnhem Highway, I headed back about 3km to a site called "Windows on the Wetlands." This is a popular tourist location which has informative displays about the land, the animals, and the seasons which throw it all together. And it's all interactive, which makes it fun!

The visitor centre is placed on one of the highest points in the Adelaide River floodplains, and has a superb observation deck with 360 degree views. You can see everything for miles, including all the wetlands flora and fauna, and the floodplains well... flooded. It really is beautiful. However, because it is still very early in the wet season, the wetlands were unfortunately not that wet. Still got some great pics though, everything is green and lush instead of the dry dead-brown which the location suffers for the other 6 months of the year.

Will definitely have to go back in March or April, after the wet season has dumped way more rain and get more pics for you. :)

  • The Safe Place

You know how sometimes you think to yourself "I'll just put this in a safe place, so I don't lose it..."

Well guess what, I forgot where that "safe place" was, didn't I?

  • Places that aren't on the map...

Mum sent me her birth certificate recently (for a passport application) and it lists my grandparents' birthplaces. Dobarlin, Yugoslavia is not on any maps.... Even google earth doesn't have it. I thought maybe it was a place with accents (in the name) so i tried that, as well as the yugoslavian spellings.

I know Yugoslavia is not its own country anymore, but the town name shouldn't have changed!

And doing a google search for "Dobarlin" doesn't bring up anything either..

    What the?
