A note on digitalspy led me to bring this up. Its actually quite disturbing, but I post the same question to you:

How long could you be dead without anyone noticing?

Well as I live alone, I guess it could be about 12-24 hours before one of my kids came looking for me.

My kids bought me my mobile phone so they could check on me when I was out and I get in trouble if I go out without it.

Couple of hours at most... Probably the longest span of time I could go un-noticed for would be between dinner and failing to get up in the morning, so about 12 hours maybe. But my dad normally wanders in here at some point between dinner and bed, so make that more like 10 hours.

To be honest, I doesn't really bother me whether I'd be discovered quickly or not.  I'd be dead therefore wouldn't know if I was face down in a ditch or cooked well beyond medium rare in a fire...

Having said that it would probably be less than an hour on account that one of my dear children rarely go longer than that without having a reason to be on the cadge for something.

Given that my death will likely be an act of sheer, public stupidity, I suspect it will take between three and five seconds for people to discover that I am dead.

'ooh did you see that?'

'yeah, thats got to hurt'

'do you think he's dead?'

'i don't know...why don't you find out?'

'no, you do it...'

'ok'

i reckon thats gonna take more than 5 seconds.....

LOL, but I'd prefer something more along the lines of:

* Lawyer: "Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?"

* Witness: "No."

* Lawyer: "Did you check for blood pressure?"

* Witness: "No."

* Lawyer: "Did you check for breathing?"

* Witness: "No."

* Lawyer: "So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?"

* Witness: "No."

* Lawyer: "How can you be so sure, Doctor?"

* Witness: "Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar."

* Lawyer: "But could the patient have still been alive nevertheless?"

* Witness: "Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law somewhere."

I know certain people whose last words will likely be something along the lines of "hey, check this out" or "dude, get this on camera"

I think it would depend on the situation.

If I was somewhere in public, sure, people around me would notice, but would they be able to notify anyone close to me? Unlikely. It would probably be a few days before my flatmate called to see where I was, or work called, but as far as KNOWING i was dead, they wouldn't have a clue. The 'public witness' may go through my phone and call my mum (actually, I'm sure the hospital would call her).

If I died at home, my flatmates would find me when she got there. She'd know what to do and who to call and notify.

If I died at work.. well.... I'm not too sure they'd take notice..

And if I was somewhere alone, then it could take forever, or up until the police (or an innocent passerby) noticed, and then I guess they'd have to identify the body and work out who i was. My family, my flattie, work, etc would all just think I was missing - or just had something better to do.

Kind of worrying...

But why would you need to be worried about how long it takes to discover you are dead...?

True, no need to worry how long it'd take... except if I died at home, and decomposed there, clean up would be a bitch!

Meanwhile, I have thought about this.... In Sydney, I reckon I could go a week or more without ppl discovering my body.

Here, in my family home, I reckon a second. I'm sure an errand or chore will need immediate attention the moment I took my last breath

I think it's less that you need to worry about being found after you're dead, after all... at that point you're past caring about anything, but it does serve as a proxy for "How much do I interact with people who actually care" (i.e. the people who would notice your absence and come looking for you).

An interesting concept SK.  I think I might have mentioned that in my case the fact that I'm missing/dead only means that I can't provide my primary function of handing over hard-earned to my offspring or  transporting them somewhere or other...  or at least thats what it seems like these days!

being a mom......a single mom....to a just about 4 year old........i am never alone for more than 15 seconds....if i'm lucky...

i can't even go to the bathroom or take a shower with out hearing..."mama...what are you doing? can i come in? i need you....i need to be with you..."

on the plus side......she does know to dial 911 (u.s.emergency #) if mommy is lying on the floor and not breathing.....or is bleeding.....or is twitching, etc.
