    Yup... leaving my job.

It's actually gotten so bad that I'm going back to bar work. I figure it'll do, even just for over the summer. I just need a little break. And I might start uni next year too.

    Sigh...

Not exactly happy, but its better than the alternative.

(insert smiley here) - none were quite appropriate

    2008-10-09 20:42:08.0

    awww.......i'm sure you'll be happier...

just don't drink away all your profits..Wink

    2008-10-09 21:18:15.0

you mean you haven't found anyone willing to take you on doing whatever it was you pretended to do....?

    (which was what?)

    2008-10-09 21:33:20.0

That bad Morgan? Can't/Won't stick it out till you find something else?

    2008-10-09 21:58:17.0

@Blue - shouldn't be a problem.. you work in a pizza shop you go off pizza, same thing goes for bars

@Sir M - are you willing to take the position of being everyones doormat, working 10-12 hour days, having excess amounts of time to attampt to be filled productively (if I was being productive, I'd only have to be there for about an hour or two a day), doing things for others literally because they're just too damn lazy, cleaning up other peoples mess and food scraps (yes, eewww), basically LIVING next to the photocopy machine, amongst other demeaning tasks, and all for $28K a year?? (oh, I didn't mention that was BEFORE taxes, did I?) It works out about $11-12 per hour.
I bid you good luck on your survival.

@Dek - I really do just need a change of pace. I'll be able to relax and take as much time as I need during the day, while still being busy at night at work. Tourist season is coming up, and I'm looking forward to the vibrance they bring with them. I'd like to be a part of that... after all, someone's gotta serve them their booze :P

    2008-10-09 22:28:58.0

A change sounds like a good thing:)

    2008-10-09 22:39:39.0

Yeah the only bad thing about going back into hospitality - xmas and new years. I won't be able to get them off.

    2008-10-09 22:40:33.0

I always wish I didn't have those two days off:)

    2008-10-09 22:55:46.0

I don't mind working them, but there' no way I'll work new years in in a bar especially after a couple of months of just getting back into it

    2008-10-10 01:25:15.0

    True... would be mad eh?

    2008-10-10 01:31:06.0

I worked it once before and it was chaos.

Anyone who's crazy enough to go out on new years knows that it takes you half an hour to get 1 drink, its always at least 6 deep at the bar, there's pushing, shoving, fights, etc...

All the staff get yelled at because we're "working too slow" or "didn't serve the person thats been waiting there 3 seconds before the other guy" and the glassies have the worst job and we rely on them to get us fresh glasses to serve and when its packed its really hard and guaranteed that we serve faster than they can pull them back in.

It really is a war zone so yeah... no thanks

    2008-10-10 01:34:57.0

You've just reminded me why I always stay in, or head to the top of the UNSW carpark. It is complete madness isn't it?

    *shudder*

    2008-10-10 01:44:01.0

My daughter does part-time bar work in my local pub.  It's not exactly a city centre "box of sweaty maggots" on a Friday night but when there is some sort of event or party, they'll ask her to turn out.  She has this knack of knowing who has been waiting longest and remembering what their last order was.  Bloody annoying, especially when I think I might be able to jump the pack because she's there.  I don't reckon she'd hack it full time though because she's always like a bear with a sore head for a few days afterwards.

    2008-10-10 01:51:31.0

Arthur, I'm spot-on with keeping up with the line and remembering orders, but its idiots who come up to the bar, push in, yell at you for a rum and coke and when you give them one they spit at you "No, I wanted a fucking vodka lemonade!" that make us seem like incompetent brainless bar girls who are just skanky pieces of meat and yeah, I think she has a pretty good reason for acting like a bear lol

    2008-10-10 01:55:13.0

I know the sort you mean.  Why do they always seem to be the ones who think they are better.  The sort who go to work in a fake Armani suit and look like complete fuckwits with their spikey waxed hair and gobbing off with their irritating friends (just like them).

    2008-10-10 02:02:32.0

Yup yup - got it in one ;)

    2008-10-10 02:03:34.0

If you are in to the entertainment world why not look for something a bit more upmarket (restaurant bar) or even do a party organisation service.  I reckon that anyone who's done all the shit-work, administration and organising for an office full of thankless morons should find something like that real easy to do.  And the only real outlay is a little bit of local travel and some phone calls, oh and a $20 dollar advert in the newsagents or somewhere.

The model is that you find people who are having a celebration of some kind (avoid formal do's like weddings and corporates) and charge them a reasonable fee to organise a venue, food, booze, entertainment and invitations.  A bit of searching around to find the stuff they need and the money comes in.

    2008-10-10 02:17:44.0

The down-side is that it means you have to do some work...

    2008-10-10 02:18:54.0

LOL - I've done events management before, promotions for the casino in darwin, managed several events such as Sunset Jazz (casino), V8 Supercars, Darwin Cup Carnival, as well as other major functions and conferences.

fair enough, I wasn't managing it on my own, I had help, but yeah I have a pretty BIG foot in the door when it comes to hospitality.

I've done bars, restaurants, hotels, events, promotions and more!

to be honest, I don't know why I ever left in the first place

    2008-10-10 02:51:36.0

Thanks for your support Arthur, I really appreciate everyone's comments :)

    2008-10-10 03:24:40.0

No worries.  Sometimes is good to have a new dawn.  I do know that you have to be careful about it though. Even an intelligent person (such as yourself) can get sucked into a routine doing a job that brings in good dollars for a bit of mindless hard work but you end up either doing work and no play and become a miserable cow or burn yourself out working and playing hard.

My best advice is summed up in one word.  Enjoy!

    2008-10-10 04:05:37.0

hey morgan...it would appear (based on your reply) that i may said something a little of of place...for which i apologize.

it was only meant as a tease, though it would appear to be inappropriate on this occasion...sorry....Frown

    2008-10-10 08:54:36.0

Oh! Yes, I forgive you, but I wasn't having a go at you. I was just trying to sarcastically explain what goes on and why nobody else would want my job (or) should ever take it.

Do I still get to keep the flowers? Innocent

    2008-10-11 23:24:39.0

sure you can...here's a little something to put them in....

    2008-10-12 10:19:14.0

um.....did you take a good look at those "vases"?

    2008-10-12 10:20:49.0

    um...no.....something wrong with them?

    2008-10-12 10:28:59.0

    yes

at least there is if you have a dirty mind.....like i do....Undecided

    2008-10-12 10:49:27.0

i thought morgan might appreciate them....

    2008-10-12 13:20:52.0

Sadly, I didn't get it until bluegirl pointed it out.

    2008-10-12 17:05:08.0

    AND GUESS WHAT!?!??!?!!

    2008-10-12 17:05:13.0

    I DID IT!!!!!!!!!

I DID IT I DID IT I DID IT!!!

I gave my resignation today, told my boss, and I'm outta here! in just 2 weeks!!

    2008-10-12 17:05:53.0

    YAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY

    2008-10-12 17:05:57.0

2 weeks? I'm not well versed on this sort of thing (But Co-Op will fix that!), but at your point I'd storm out of the office giving bras d'honneur to your employers while stealing random office supplies...

...I'm gonna have a hella awesome criminal record, one day...

    2008-10-12 17:18:07.0

    2 weeks eh?

I guess congratulations are in order?

    :)

    2008-10-12 17:38:53.0

    Hmm maybe...

Actually, I plan on taking stuff from the kitchen... I want a company mug, some of those fancy highball glasses, maybe some bowls or new silverware. I also planning on taking "my share" from the liquor cabinet that nobody ever goes into....

just ostensibly adding a picture, random googling at work has promoted me to add that last bit in whitetext, for fear of them firing me before I leave

    2008-10-12 18:00:06.0

(sunshine with a hint of synth's specialty);)

    2008-10-12 18:29:34.0

    HAHAHAHA

I think they'll figure your plans out if you stumble out of your office mumbling the Communist Manifesto to staplers... Tongue out

    2008-10-12 19:24:49.0

    Synth, you're such a psycho!

    2008-10-12 19:43:12.0

    Staplers aren't really my style... I'm a sticky-note fiend from way back:P

    2008-10-12 19:44:48.0

I never actually took to post-its... they don't stick well enough

    2008-10-12 19:59:43.0

Well the idea is to do whatever you wrote on them by the time they fall off the wall.

No use putting a reminder up, only to be left there for weeks and weeks and it falls off and hides under your desk...

    2008-10-12 20:18:34.0

Oops.... You've just reminded me that I have my 'Thesis is due NOW' reminder still stuck to the monitor at home...

    It's been 2 years now:P

    2008-10-12 20:23:51.0

See, that's why I never took to post its:P

    2008-10-12 21:06:45.0

Blu tack on the other hand, ROCKS!

    2008-10-12 21:07:02.0

    Hell yeeeeaaaaahhhhhh

    2008-10-12 21:52:32.0

Blu tack.....Yuck......ever see what happens to it on a really hot day..Surprised

    2008-10-12 22:31:33.0

    It should be banned..Yell

    2008-10-12 22:32:34.0

    Yeah, I have....

    2008-10-12 22:35:04.0

I have these little photoframes suck on the wall next to my bed, and every summer, they slide down till they fall off.

It's quite funny. Our little ritual.

    2008-10-12 22:35:47.0

Then you have that oily mucky stuff to clean off the wall, and if it's flat paint it can be nigh on impossible to get off without leaving a stain..

I once had to re-paint a whole wall to get rid of the marks.....

    2008-10-12 22:40:30.0

hmmm... it's never marked my walls...

The stuff I hang, sometimes. Esp if it's paper based

    2008-10-12 22:42:06.0

Maybe it was the type of paint I had, that caused the probs..

This wasn't at home, it was at work.....maybe 10 years ago.... maybe longer..Undecided

    2008-10-12 22:45:44.0

Hmm old fashioned weird fangdangle paint....

Now they make paint with pro-blu-tac-technology!!

    2008-10-12 23:12:36.0

Or maybe they make non-staining bluetack now:P

    2008-10-13 00:01:42.0

The wall had been painted about 6 months prior to the CEO putting up posters/pictutes etc with blu-tack. it was fine till the summer came and all his decorations started to slide down and fall off the walls.

I took the whole lot down and next time he came down, he said "what happened to all the stuff I put up on the wall".   I told him what had happened and showed him the stains that had been left, and said that I couldn't get them off, he just shrugged and said "you had better get the painters back to paint the wall again".    Easy..Surprised

    2008-10-13 02:12:03.0

    hahahaha

Hey, at least it was his fault...

    2008-10-13 06:43:45.0

LOL, I almost thought you were leaving Tangler...:)

    2008-10-20 07:27:44.0

    LOL - no not funny

    2008-10-20 07:38:07.0

I keep thinking she's quitting smoking every time i see this topic title... Even though I've read it, participated in it etc...

    Something wrong with my brain

    2008-10-20 21:24:11.0

    *knock*
    *opens casing*
    *hmm*

Yup, it's just what I thought, a segfault.

    Ooh! A bug!

    2008-10-20 23:19:32.0

*looks at you with a blank expression on her face*

    *brain hangs*

    2008-10-20 23:23:56.0

    Tongue out

Haven't you ever had a makeshift lobotomy before?

The wonders of Calvin and Hobbes.

    2008-10-20 23:27:38.0

*reaches into dek's brain, pulls out the bugs, muttering "they must have multiplied in there" and feeds the bugs to his pet anteater, whom he keeps for just these sorts of occasions*

    2008-10-21 02:10:30.0

*notices how dek's brain looks somewhat smaller without the bug infection*

    2008-10-21 07:40:20.0

Stay away from my brain!! Yell

    2008-10-21 19:00:33.0

Are you done with the old job yet?

    2008-10-29 05:43:45.0

Yep.. read the other topic... ;)
