  • Never doubt the power of one individual

There's a commversation going on over in General Discussion about "World Peace Day" for which dekrazee1 linked to a video by the individual who came up with the idea for the "day" - and pushed it all the way through adoption by the UN...

This video about the idea and process could be inspiration for us in this group!

  • What can we do as users of Tangler?

I can't express how strongly I feel about the potential importance of this project!

Please join me in giving some consideration to how we might collectively use the incredible platform that the folks at Tangler have provided to assist in the success  of this incredible project...I can't think of a better internet platform for the discussion evolving out of the films that are to be produced.... we can be part of something great!

  • Film That Changed You

Change comes in doses big and small, of course.... and the effect is cumulative.

Many years ago, one song had an impact on me quite beyond its very simple words ... the last refrain stuck in my mind from the very first time I heard it.... and remains, and touches me to this very day.  As I was thinking about the Pangea Day I thought of some of the moving films I've seen of any genre and  I began to think what an important piece background music would probably bring to some of the most moving films and the song came rushing back to me....

    "and each one there,
    Has one thing shared:
They have sweated beneath the same sun,
Looked up in wonder at the same moon,
And wept when it was all done
    For bein' done too soon,
    For bein' done too soon."
    (Neil Diamond)

I've always thought it would be fascinating to have images of all the people mentioned in the tune... and then I realized that by now someone must have done just that... so off to YouTube with the following result:

While not as powerful as I thought it might be, I remain convinced

Music and images... together ... this will be one of the keys to dramatic presentation.

  • Introduction

What is Pangea Day?  according to their web site:

Pangea day taps the power of film to strengthen tolerance and compassion while uniting millions of people to build a better future.

In a world where people are often divided by borders, difference, and conflict, it's easy to lose sight of what we all have in commond.  Pangea Day seeks to overcome that - to help people see themselves in others- through the power of film.

On May 10, 2008 - Pangea Day - sites in New York City, Rio, London, Dharamsala, Cairo, Jerusalem, and Kigali will be videoconferenced live to produce a 4-hour program of powerful films, visionary speakers and uplifting music.

The program will be broadcast live to the world through the internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones.

Of course, movies can't change the world.  But the people who watch them can.  So following May 10,2008, Pangea Day organizers will facilitate community-building activities around the world by connecting inspired viewers with numberous organizations which are already doing groundbreaking work.

  • How the concept of Pangea Day came together

2006 TED Prize winner Jehane Noujaim's wish: I wish to bring the world together for one day a year through the power of film.

    As revealed at TED2007:

"TED encouraged me to just throw a dream out there," Jehane says. And her grand, complex, invigorating dream is becoming real, thanks to the TED community.

Starting in June 2007, Pangea is asking people around the world to create short, powerful films that deal with universal themes, such as food, home, water, laughter, sorrow, hope, landscape, despair and joy. Noujaim and a jury of top filmmakers will select films to be featured on Pangea Day, May 10, 2008.

On Pangea Day, live sites in Brazil, Egypt, India, Israel, Rwanda and the United States will be videoconferenced to produce a four-hour program of powerful films, visionary speakers, and uplifting music. The program will be broadcast live through the internet, television, digital cinemas, and mobile phones. Organized through the Internet in a meetup-type model, millions of people from different countries will meet in cinemas, at outdoor screenings and in private homes to watch the Pangea program and connect with each other.

Of course, movies alone can’t change the world. But the people who watch them can. So at these screenings, we'll give people immediate, practical opportunities to put their inspiration to work through diverse organizations working to solve the challenges that -- sooner or later -- touch everyone on the planet.

    How it came together:

    • Hundreds of offers were received from the TED Community -- however, because the nature of the wish was creative, the first step of this wish was brainstorming the best way to make it happen, and the next step was building an infrastructure around the idea, in build a foundation for the offers of help to land on
    • TEDster David Alberts, from What on Earth Is Going On, gave many hours of his time around the development and creative of the wish
    • TEDsters Jim Hornthal, of CMEA Ventures, and Jon Kamen, of @radicalmedia, championed the idea with introductions and advice
    • TEDster Richard Fox, of Pinstripe.com, built a temporary Pangea website
    • The Sapling Foundation committed up to $1 million in organizational funding
    • Avenue A / Razorfish volunteered creative services, and is redesigning the permanent website at http://www.pangeaday.org and providing advertising and marketing support for the organization
    • Sunny Vanderbeck, of Data Return, is hosting Pangea’s website

    Into the future:

TED and many heros from the TED community are working closely with Jehane and the Pangea team as they set up this global event. For more details on Pangea Day and how to become involved, please visit http://www.PangeaDay.org or send an email to info@pangeaday.org.
