Please post your feedback about this build specifically here - restart your particls to get auto-updated

    2007-06-20 18:32:21.0

    Two problems:

    1) Particls hard crash on download of upate

    2) Installer seems to have hung during execution of Firefox Toolbar installer

    2007-06-20 20:49:14.0

Really? Those systems have not been touched

    2007-06-20 20:54:15.0

    Did you try again Bri?

    2007-06-20 20:54:21.0

Dowloading as I type...(restart of Particls didn't work after aborted first auto-update -- as to be expected)

    2007-06-20 20:55:32.0

After I get it working I'll send you the screen snaps I took...

    2007-06-20 20:56:22.0

The auto update didn't complete though?  It hung on the FirefoxToolbar right? So it corrupted the Particls installation u had?:(

    2007-06-20 20:56:25.0

That sucks - not sure why that happened - might have been an aberration

    2007-06-20 20:58:02.0

    Gets worse yet...

On install of complete session when Particls starts up I get a "particls Encountered A Fatal Exception" error  ... the handy "learn more about possible ways of solving this problem" link takes me to your web of course and the news:

    Error Resolution

If this error continues to occur there are two options:

    1. Submit the error to the Development team and wait for the next build which should have a fix included

    2. Most errors can be fixed by resetting the %appdata%\particls folder. Please note that this will clear your feed subscriptions, attention profile and other configuration options.

More information is coming here soon.

    2007-06-20 21:01:48.0

You should have the automatic report in your mail soon...

    2007-06-20 21:02:19.0

Here's the first error I got:

    2007-06-20 21:04:19.0

sorry I thought I'd captured the screen at time it was hung,,,

here's the fatal exception on execution of the 'fresh' download:

    2007-06-20 21:11:34.0

Found it... here's where the auto-install hung:

    2007-06-20 21:16:08.0

    A CLEAN INSTALL CRASHES

    2007-06-20 21:22:05.0

Off to look at files to see I can spot the problem....

Probably  limited to me... but I think you should try a clean install yourself quickly just to make sure !

    2007-06-20 21:22:56.0

We're looking into it - thanks for the great info Bri!

    2007-06-20 22:15:00.0

I have installed fresh and experienced no problems - i think it must have been a symptom of your broken auto-upgrade

    2007-06-20 22:17:52.0

I had Particls working fine in Vista prior to this update. During the install process I get the message: "Invalid file handle 32" but otherwise get through to the "click finish to close this wizard" screen.  But when I close that dialogue box, I get the "particls encountered a fatal exception dialogue box":(((

    2007-06-20 22:48:27.0

Jason the Invalid file handle can just be skipped - it is a vista error when installing on top of the last version.

The fatal exception is new for this build - we are looking into it right now

    2007-06-20 23:09:00.0

    Shut Down Not Clean:

with 0.9.2172.0  quit from the options  stops the ticker etc,  but an artifact is left in memory... each quit will result in an additional fragment remaining and each start spawns a new process.

    2007-06-21 00:01:02.0

    2007-06-21 00:01:45.0

Thanks for looking into the fatal exception error. If I may be so bold, please don't make me reinstall Particls from scratch...it takes a long time to customise all those finicky feeds just the way you like them...to have to restore it manually from scratch would be, er, suboptimal... That said, I just love this program. Thanks for creating something so useful and elegant. Kind rgds,  Jason

    2007-06-21 00:22:19.0

    Re: Shutdown not clean:

When I shutdown windows I got four exception boxes (one for each of the instances of Particls) "This Program is Not Responding"  that had to be manually stopped for the windows shutdown to complete.

    2007-06-21 00:24:45.0

OK, I downloaded 0.9.2172. Loading was interrupted after about two minutes (went further than before) and I got your new error-handling message. Following your recommendation, I renamed the application data\particls folder to particls.old. Then I reinstalled 0.9.2172 and got no fatal exception. Now it works: I'm seeing the ticker again, great!

Now of course my profile is totally empty, no watch words, no feeds... What I would like to try now is close Particls, bring back some of the files from the application data\particls.old folder into application data\particls and see what happens.

    In my particls.old directory, there are 3 APML files + 2 OPML files (particls.feedadapter.opml and touchstone.feedapter.opml) + pinnedalerts.xml + cache.tdat (171K) + user.cfg

What do you suggest? Should I try this import or just wait for the next release?

    2007-06-21 00:41:19.0

    Re: Shudown not clean:

Using windows shutdown without first "quit particls" proceeds properly with no exception dialogue box.... it is only when you've first used the 'quit particls" from system toolbar that artifacts appear to interfere with the shutdown...

    2007-06-21 00:46:46.0

    Hi Francois.

You should be able to copy back in your "particls.feedadapter.opml", and the apml file that matches your username. That will give you back your APML and feeds.

    2007-06-21 00:48:52.0

Thanks Paul,  I'll try this and tell you if it works

    2007-06-21 00:49:58.0

I had 3 APML files in my appdata\particls folder:

    %my-email%.apml, dated May 1, 272K

François Dongier-0.5.apml (same day, same size, same "last modified time" as the first one)

    François Dongier.apml, 408KB, June 5

I looked into the files to see what's inside:

The "particls.feedadapter.opml" looks great, with all the feeds intact.

The first two APML files are OK, although containing lots  of info that doesn't seem really relevant in the "authors" section)

The third APML file (408KB) is empty  (I mean, just blank if I look at its content with a text editor like Notepad)

Not sure it's a good idea to create files names with special characters like "ç" and "@" ...

So I first copied back  the OPML file and restarted:everything OK. Exited Particls, and copied back the François Dongier-0.5.apml, renaming it to François Dongier.ampl. Evrything seems fine now. Nice to see this ticker moving again... Bravo.

    2007-06-21 01:29:55.0

Glad to hear you're moving again.

    2007-06-21 01:31:45.0

Can u guys please restart particls and test the auto-update for me

    2007-06-21 01:35:01.0

Version 0.9.2195.0 up and running fine!

    2007-06-21 01:40:12.0

    Re: Shudown not clean:

That problem seems to have been resolved as well...  good stuff !

    2007-06-21 01:44:03.0

    thank u Bri and Francois!

    2007-06-21 01:44:20.0

First report on 0.9.2203.0  ....  all great... for the first time with an update I didn't lose the speed setting on the Ticker ... a small burr removed... thank-you:)

    2007-06-22 20:36:39.0

Hmmm..  I don't appear to be able to reload for my adaptors (Amazon, LinkedIN, Technorati) they all fail to load.

    2007-06-22 20:40:43.0

    how do you mean Bri?

    2007-06-24 02:28:56.0

I get the same results on my LinkedIn and Technorati feeds...[Load] button... results in flash of something at bottom of feed listing box (but no info put into it) ... "waiting" message appears at far left,... and hitting the [add] button, in case the feeds have been found but just not shown, results in the error message "Failed to add x feeds"

    2007-06-24 21:58:34.0

Hmm strange - will look into it for you

    2007-06-25 15:32:38.0

This should now be working as of the latest version (0.9.2258.0)

    2007-07-07 02:27:01.0

Amazon and Technorai feeds working.... but LinkedIn does not seem to load results..
