English is singular among languages that use Roman characters in that it doesn't use accents but let's remember that Spanish, Portuguese, German, French, Italian and others all require them

Well, there goes world domination.  Again. ;)

Thanks for letting us know about this Pstrg - will ticket it!

Funny thing is that it's not always like that: in most cases, accentuated characters are indeed removed from the item's title. But sometimes they come through very well. If for instance you subscribe to http://www.zdnet.fr/feeds/rss/actualites/?l=20 , you'll probably see some items from that feed in your ticker with the accents, and some without.

This is becasue the font we are using has only very limited unicode character support, and unless we move to something like Ariel Unicode MS, its not likely we will support unicide stuff anytime soon.  The only downside to ariel unicode, is that it will add 14MB  (yes its a 24MB font file - which compresses to about 14MB) to the installer!!

Maybe we could provide an international download with the different font file?

    2007-07-07 02:16:35.0

Yes, as far as I am concerned, this is a very secondary issue, since most of my feeds are in English. But  I suppose it can discourage people who have lots of items with accents. I wouln't mind downloading 14 or 24 MB to have them... If the download could be just once, it would be perfect.

Ariel is standard font though - wouldn't need to be in the installer

    2007-07-07 20:06:28.0

Perhaps if we detect certain characters we can switch fonts or something?

    2007-07-07 20:06:42.0

Pardon me for bouncing. I'd say this to be a primary issue for anyone who does not limit him/herself to Latin (oops,,, English). In some cases, it's difficult to guess words in which two adjacent letters (and more) have been suppressed by Particls - for instance, texts in French and Portuguese. I think that the additional size would be gladly accepsted by multilingual users.

Pstrg - Thanks for the feedback - it is on our radar and we will try to add better multi-language support as soon as time permits

Looks like something has changed for the better (accented letters are not suppressed anymore) albeit with glitches.

Above one may note that feed Estadão - Vida Digital (http://www.estadao.com.br/rss/tecnologia.xml) is OK while Folha - Informática (http://feeds.folha.uol.com.br/folha/informatica/rss091.xml) and Le Monde - International (http://www.lemonde.fr/rss/sequence/0,2-3210,1-0,0.xml) among others had all accented letters replaced with

I think the best way to edit a post is to delete it and repost it (you can only delete your posts of course:)

Yes, I saw these lovely signs today too ( )

It is indeed possible to edit - I just did not notice the icons on the right - they permit editing and deleting

I thik a midterm solution is also possible. Is the words come without the accents but in correct words, will be better. For example: "Conspiração". Is better read "conspiracao" than "Conspiraï?1/2o"  or something like that.

But the beter way to solve it is not doing a file with a international release but a file with a language pack. If you are french, you install particls and after that you run the french pack, If you are Brazilian, like me, you run the PTBR pack, and so on.

I was just thinking of posting here after looking today at the AideRSS blog... they seem to have found a solution to this problem.

    2007-09-04 15:55:02.0

I've been there and didn't realize how it will fix the language problem in Particls. Could you draw for me, pls?

    2007-09-05 15:40:26.0

Sorry, I have no idea how they did it, but they seem happy with their solution which now covers European, Russian and Asian characters sets

    2007-09-06 01:53:50.0

I have copied ARIALUNI.TTF from my MS Office 2003 cdrom onto my c:\windows\fonts

    2007-10-03 06:44:34.0

    I closed / restarted Particls

    2007-10-03 06:44:58.0

the accents are still replaced by garbage...

    2007-10-03 06:45:18.0

The current version of Particls does not really support non english characters - we are working on this for version 2
