Yeah I don't know - you don't want to make the output device too prominent. They need to be as invisible as possible. The moving text will altery people when they need to be alterted - a dominating colour block on a users desktop will have them resent it.

Actually by making it dark/close to black I was hoping to have it NOT draw attention to itself and be as invisible as possible

I always try to get the backround of particls to match the standard XP background blue, and I replace the particls logo with the feed logo
That was another option - try to adopt current the windows colors for the user - but for Vista that doesn't work very well
