    Known Issues

    • Adapter context still needs further documentation and fleshing out.

    • Some adapters still do not remember their settings from version to version.

    • IE Browser extension does not always auto-enable on install.

    • IE Browser extension doesn't uninstall itself when the application is uninstalled.

    • Sometimes, removing sources from the right click menu will cause the application to crash.

    • Background color highlights to signify importance are not yet bright enough for important items - to be corrected in subsequent builds.

    2007-07-16 17:38:15.0

Please re-start Particls and please let me know if the new sidebar loads docked to the left side of your screen without a hitch

    2007-07-16 17:40:37.0

I installed the new release and got a fatal exception ( Application Help > Exceptions > System.Collections.Generic.KeyNotFoundException).

In Particls, I had the ticker enabled and the sidebar disabled when I set AutoUpdate level to ExperimentalBuild, which launched the install.

    2007-07-16 17:47:06.0

Really? You didn't have that error before I assume?

    2007-07-16 17:54:21.0

:( Did it ask u to send the error report?

    2007-07-16 17:55:10.0

Then I tried to restart it from Windows, got the same crash, but I think it didn't ask about the error report.

    2007-07-16 17:56:16.0

Have you read about the problem I had with the sidebar (in another topic)?

    2007-07-16 17:57:18.0

    Might be related...?

    2007-07-16 17:57:55.0

Yeah but there is a new sidebar so I'd like to know about your experience with this one first

    2007-07-16 17:57:59.0

Will discuss the other issues in that topic though

    2007-07-16 17:58:50.0

Need someone else to confirm the upgrade bug though

    2007-07-16 17:59:01.0

    I can confirm the error

    2007-07-16 17:59:13.0

    I just updated... crash

    2007-07-16 17:59:22.0

Grr - so strange that these things pop up for users and not for us:P
Ok thanks guys - Will get ash onto it right away - thank god for ExperimentalBulds:)

    2007-07-16 18:00:06.0

ok tell me if I can do anything useful for you just now. If not, it's 3am , will get some sleep:)

    2007-07-16 18:00:53.0

could it have something to do with having the old sidebar jar?

    2007-07-16 18:02:11.0

    Im checking with Ash atm

    2007-07-16 18:02:43.0

Francois - go to sleep mate - don't worry about us:)

    2007-07-16 18:03:52.0

In the "Particls sidebar topic", you (Chris) said: "Problem is when we release the actual sidebar - people who have downloaded this one will have a bit of a problem - we will have to make sure we look for and delete the file". Isn't that the problem?

    2007-07-16 18:05:38.0

No I believe Ash has pre-empted that problem in Particls by clearing the Adapter folder first

    2007-07-16 18:06:44.0

    Unless he forgot:)

    2007-07-16 18:06:48.0

Is there a way to force an update check? I'm now at 0.9.2258.0 and it's not asking me to update. Or did you turn the new update off

    2007-07-16 18:08:56.0

    I turned it off Duck

    2007-07-16 18:09:08.0

Because you guys were experiencing problems

    2007-07-16 18:09:14.0

I have the power *evil laugh*

    2007-07-16 18:09:34.0

Yep, the particls.sidebar.tsa file is recent

    2007-07-16 18:09:34.0

    Btw it's not a Jar file:) it's a DLL

    2007-07-16 18:09:54.0

OK guys, have good fun all day, and when I wake up there'll be a nice sidebar on my screen:)

    2007-07-16 18:10:31.0

Nite Francois:) Thanks for reporting in

    2007-07-16 18:10:48.0

immediate, just saw the ticker with "waiting for contents" for about 30 seconds before the crash

    2007-07-16 18:11:17.0

can you tell I spend too much time with Java... I wasn't thinking

    2007-07-16 18:11:37.0

    Sign of a dedicated man:)

    2007-07-16 18:12:30.0

ok guys found the problem.   Will be releasing as soon as we've tested it internally.

    2007-07-16 22:19:21.0

    Duck you still there?

    2007-07-16 22:54:32.0

    Anyone around?:)

    2007-07-17 06:08:04.0

New build available - let us know if the are any problems

    2007-07-17 06:13:21.0

OK everything seems fine now with build 0.9.2355 . I had a crash again when clicking on the Particls icon on the desktop. So I renamed the %appdata% directory, loaded Particls, closed it, and then restored my AMPL and OPML files. So here I am with a nice sidebar which wordwraps well... and "more information working as it should. And what a lovely skin! I'll be looking in the next hours at how the sidebar's content evolves and how it compares with good old ticker.

    2007-07-17 09:08:50.0

I'm back in the game.... previous release resulted in 'breaking' apml... and I didn't have time to fix (days and days without Particls oh my!) ... so I just finally got around to clearing out corrupted file...I finally restored from too old backup <sigh> , got  experimentalbuild 9.2355.0 and running ok it seems... I like the look and feel of the sidebar now...

THe icons at bottom of the sidebar are a real plus BUT... the collapse sidebar doesn't seem to play nice with FF sidebar. Collapse seems to make my FF sidbar collapse, not the particls sidebar!)

(random mumbling re corruption fo APML file.... this is the second time its happened to me when I've had 20+ open items on my desktop at the time of shutdown of machine... I'm thinking, but haven't pinned it down,  that I still have some sort of time issue on shutdown happening before write to disk of apml file is accomplished in these circumstances)

    2007-07-17 15:35:58.0

I'm not seeing the problem with the Firefox sidebar collapsing. I'm using the All-In-One sidebar extension though, not sure if that makes a difference.

    2007-07-17 15:46:46.0

That's what I've got duck1123 ... but it doesn't seem so bad now (or at least I can't replicate what I thought I had seen) what I now get is this:

When I have the FF sidebar open and the Particls sidebar pinned to the left side of the screen, hitting the collapse icon on the Particle sidebar  results in the expansion of the ff to full screen size but not collapse of the particls sidebar until I move the mouse...this isn't really too big a concern of course.

    2007-07-17 15:54:53.0

ok, that was the same thing I saw

    2007-07-17 16:13:54.0

Hey guys - Great to see you have all upgraded

    2007-07-17 16:30:05.0

I am not sure why the APML Corruption occured - has that happened for everyone who upgraded?

    2007-07-17 16:30:17.0

now I'm backing up my APML file every two hours hehe:)

    2007-07-17 16:31:41.0

The only time my APML got corrupted when upgrading was a couple months ago. but I think you changed APML versions when that happened.

    2007-07-17 16:31:41.0

We are adding an additional APML safegard to particls now

    2007-07-17 17:00:03.0

On startup it backs up your APML to a .lastgood file, and will then restore that file if it finds a corrupted APML

    2007-07-17 17:00:19.0

But I am more concerned about this particular 'sidebar' update corrupting APML - Duck you can confirm that it didn't happen for you right?

    2007-07-17 17:00:45.0

not this time. Of course I updated to the broken build, re-installed with the build that the crash page linked to, updated to the next build, then updated to the newest build this morning. So my upgrade path was a bit different than others

    2007-07-17 17:04:35.0

    Ok - thanks mate:)

    2007-07-17 17:08:02.0

..ok perhaps this is best served for another topic completely, but everyone relax:)

    2007-07-17 17:09:33.0

far out - Tangler needs to support /me - I am going to report that as a bug

    2007-07-17 17:10:54.0

the APML corruption bug has existed for a little while in the testbeds here in the office, but we've never been able to reproduce with a live build, so at the time it wasnt considered uber high priority.  Obviously some people have been getting it, which is why, last night in fact, we've started working on a tripple safe guard to protecting and backing up user's APML data.

We already have a safe-guard in place, by writting out the APML changes into a tmp file first and then copying the tmp file over the top of the actual APML file, but we discoverd that if your Particls crashes EXACTLY at the right moment when the APML object thread is half way through that process, the tmp file and the APML file can be corrupted.

Thats a lot of technical jargon, but the point is, that it's unrelated to this build and in the next release, there are 3 fail-safes (and stronger exception handling) now instead of one to safe guard this very important data.

    2007-07-17 17:15:04.0

Thank-you Thank-you Thank-you (one for each fail safe):)

    2007-07-17 22:36:07.0

Haha poor Bri - you have had the worst APML problems of anyone, anywhere in the world:)

    2007-07-18 01:49:23.0

We should call these safegards the BricoleurProtections

    2007-07-18 01:50:08.0

I'm willing to bet that I'm abusing the thing by having the largest APML file as well...;)

    2007-07-18 20:28:12.0

I'll be passing a milestone of sorts very soon on the current APML incarnation....

    2007-07-18 20:29:26.0

    What milestone?:)

    2007-07-18 23:46:16.0

I'm currently at 97,982 items output.

    2007-07-19 00:42:58.0

We should have a Tangler party for Bri's 100 thousandth item

    2007-07-19 00:44:26.0

Good you talk about this. I was just wondering actually how to interpret the sentence "1750 out of 12152 items outputted". Can someone explain what this means exactly?

    2007-07-19 01:23:31.0

Now, about one hour later, I have "1801 out of 12642". So, I suppose it means that in the last hour, 51 items made it to the sidebar, out of 490 items that were processed. Is that it?

    2007-07-19 03:29:21.0

    Yep that's right

    2007-07-19 03:40:38.0

Although that is a pretty low amount - did u change the settings at all?

    2007-07-19 03:41:00.0

or 490 / hour is low?

    2007-07-19 03:42:16.0

or 10% making it to the sidebar is low?

    2007-07-19 03:45:47.0

10% making it to the sidebar is pretty low - but thats ok

    2007-07-19 03:46:28.0

I think a good filter should filter a lot:)

    2007-07-19 03:47:16.0

The only setting I changed is SafeFilterOnContentDiscovery that I have set to false. This hasn't brought me anything very exciting so far...

    2007-07-19 03:53:36.0

Although I did see for the first time this morning an ad for Cialis in the sidebar

    2007-07-19 03:54:57.0

Didn't stay there long, but it made it there.

    2007-07-19 03:55:45.0

Or maybe it's one of your sponsors?

    2007-07-19 03:56:28.0

Ok Francois - can u test a new update for me please?

    2007-07-19 04:03:24.0

    re-start:)

    2007-07-19 04:05:04.0

computer very slow now, will take some time

    2007-07-19 04:07:36.0

    restart Particls, or Windows?

    2007-07-19 04:08:46.0

or u could change ur auto-updatetype to major and back to experimental

    2007-07-19 04:09:15.0

this is just to force an update check - particls usually checks every hour by itself

    2007-07-19 04:09:25.0

    downloading...

    2007-07-19 04:11:01.0

    installed, waiting for content...

    2007-07-19 04:12:53.0

    ok got a full sidebar
