added del.icio.us popular RSS feed via By URL and in Advanced | Rate your sources I have two feeds: "del.icio.uspopular" and "del.icio.us popular"
but in Feed Adapter and Manage my Feeds there is only one instance
this would be because at some time somewhere the source was called 'del.icio.uspopular' and therefore the source rating system has accounted for it
we will improve it over time so that sources that are no longer active are automatically removed or it lets u delete them
ok. I also have an "Ad" source in "Rate your sources" which I didnt add![]()
yes this is the Touchstone ad system
which will eventually include some context sensistive ads
I put it on Strongly dislike![]()
unless u get a pro version
haha
i am sure you have
suggestion: scrollin ticker bar via mouse - like click and drag mouse to left to move over some items quickly. with some inertia would be cool also
Have considered that one - would not be easy haha
annoyance: Options windows resize when changing from advanced to basic and back (I resize to get the event loggin bigger)
Yeah that is a little annoying I agree!
yeah so you saw my post in the tangler feedback thread. if i plug my email address into particls site the confirmation email has touchstone as the sender and zookoda as the confirmation link text
oh right
good catch
will fix now
Fixed!
Thanks for that Gus
suggestion: possible to search old items that were in the Ps stream ? how long they are stored in cache.tdat ?
any comment on last line ?
hi
I *think* the cache is stored permanently
but at the moment there is not an interface to look at it
hmm, as it is a sqlite3 database, maybe we can take a look![]()
maybe have a talk with Ashley first - he will be able to tell you more about it -
another possibility is that you could write an output adapter
that stores the items above a certain value and release that
only if the make the SDK work with other languages than .NET
![]()
what language do you want ?
C / Ruby
I am not sure what is happening with the SDK and other languages
ok, SQLite Analyser opens the database and I can look at the items. ihaa
I have to head off now - its middle of the night here (in Australia) - mayby add Ashley as a contact and he may have some more detialed answers
ok cool - I hope you made a copy of it first
just in case
of course![]()
cool - tty
good night
hmm, update version is coming. please add a progress bar![]()
0.9.1457 release note is using touchstone -> 404 link
replaced with particls - works![]()
TBD - Items are outputted to RSS via Pebbles
So again - you could make a ruby app to capture people's RSS and allow them to search on it from the web
Chris - yeah, but this is kinda scratchin your left ear with your right hand. I want to look at all items in the database. and opening the database allowed me that![]()
haha sort of - but that's how mashups are made - we are only a small team and can do only so much - that's why we have spent a lot of time creating extensibility points..
true. and that's why we are coming in - the users that want to extend![]()
I want to test why I dont have any items displayed - Ps is filtering too much ?
maybe I should get my whole GoogleReader feeds and see then
yeah the items are probably too old or uninteresting
how many feeds and watch words do you have
5 feeds and 11 words
but I didt saw any del.icio.us/popular items even if it had words inside the title
depends on a few things - when it finds something interesting it will display it![]()
if u want more contnet displayed u need to give it more feeds/watchwords or set interruptions to high
it is possible to have it displayed which words matched an item that arrived in Ps stream ?
that is a feature we have on the roadmap
cool. if you add C/Ruby to making plugins you will have a very happy user
do u know any C# developers?
nope![]()
ok
it is possible to config how old an item should be before dropping it ? for example I want links from delicious to not drop even if they are 10 days old![]()
An item's age is only part of the calculation used to drop the item
What we do is use the Personal Relevancy of an item to decide which items should appear ON the ticker, and then we use the Personal Relevancy number to determine when it should be removed from the ticker
So the short answer is no![]()
not yet no
unless you write your own output adapter that caches items
Haha - TBD you will be happy to hear we have started talking about Ruby support for input adapters
we are thinking that we could make it so that we create a folder where any app could drop an XML file or RSS feed in it, and Touchstone would suck the XML into itself and proccess the items
but it is a number of deliverables away
ruby based output adapters would need to be based on the Pebbles RSS feed - that's what it is designed for
Do u know techmeme TBD?
yeah, i know techmeme
the thing with Pebbles is that it outputs to your server than I need to get the data back to access it. bit cumbersome
also dont like the redirects when I click on the item in the News ticker
But a Ruby app would be running up on the web anyway presumably - so accessing an RSS feed is not really a big deal is it?
Something we really want to do is create a Techmeme/newspaper type view of the Pebbles RSS feed so people can check their Touchstone items from work etc on the web
let me know if you are in for helping with that![]()
yeah. but that is Ruby/Rails. I am talking plain Ruby. but it is a good idea to have newspaper view
let's do it
gotta go now. talk later
Sounds good - let me know when u got some time and we can talk more
/me back. let's see what we can do
do we move to Particls Plugins/Adapters/Extensions ?
good idea
I just had a nifty idea on refining keywords to search/block. Sorry if it's already been mentioned but it's 1am and I'm lazy right now (^_^)
I'd like to be able to click on the preview for each link in the ticker (and see a little more text honestly), and see what keyword(s) brought up that link.
I want that too!!!
So many time I look at something and I find myself trying to figure out what brought this up, why is it showing
that is something that we are thiking of doing - having keywords highlighted so that you get an idea of why this is interest to you
Yeah.... cos I went and imported my whole google reader thingy, and things just got too complicated after that
it should be simpler then google reader - you import your feeds and PArticls will show you what you are interested in
where were you finding it confusing ?
It just kept showing me all the stories... and I couldn't manage it.... I don't want to know when there is a new google video... (I have a lot of subscriptions). Also, the ticker would show the same story from many sources. Sometimes I saw a story I had no idea how it got there. (Which is why I agree with Fiz's suggestion) Just got too much to handle.
I need to take some time and play with it somemore, but I just haven't had the time as yet
what is happening there - is that its catching up on your old news - let it run for a while and it will calm down
you can also reduce the priority of the ticker - (or any othe radapter) so that it only shows you imporatnt / very importnat alerts
Oh, and another thing was that what particls had shown me would still show up in Google Reader..... and I can't use particls at home, so it all got too out of sync etc
and you can rank your sources up and down
the things that particls shows you will still show up in google reader
why cant you use particls at home ?
Don't have a fast connection at home.
That thing where it isn't in sync with G Reader was a big turn off for me
I didn't like going back into Reader and seeing the stuff I'd already seen
there is no way that we can affect what google reader shows you
Yeah, I realise that....
I just had to make a decision based on my habits right now
the idea is that particls isnt meant to replace your email / news reader
its meant to alert you to the higher priority things
hmmmm.....
I'm not sure abt that (possibly cos what I have in my reader are mainly high priority)
Like I said, I have to use it again and for a longer period of time
yep - give it a try and we can help with it
Hi Dekrazee - there are some user experience questions around ur main reader and particls syncing up - - the reality is that google doesn't like to play nice so we will have to find other ways
i wonder if you can log in and act on behalf of the user
Also if you are getting too much news from your feeds, you can rate certain sources down and they will appear less in the ticker.. In the next couple of builds you will be able to right click on items and mark the source down right there
I'm going to be calling u Rai from now on if u dont mind - much more personal![]()
and a lot easier to spell
that too hah
hahahaha or you could call me dek
(whichever you prefer - I'm cool with anything)
there are

I don't understand.... does that mean I'll be asking Google to get its act together to make my life easier?
</div></div>ok, can I do a google reader integration plugin ?![]()
it is quite simple
you think?
what sort of integration do u think you can do
you can get the stream of unread items and feed as an RSS to Ps
but the sync wont go back the other way
i beleive Google reader already has a stream of unread items - but it does not have an api to mark items as read inside google reader (or does it)
checking
got my info from - http://www.niallkennedy.com/blog/archives/2005/12/google_reader_a.html
TBD that is amazing
could you make an app that ran seperate to Particls that synced the google reader subscription list with the Particls OPML file
and if we can give you an RSS feed of items the user readers, you can try to mark them as read in google reader (or vice versa)
didn find out how to mark items read in GR
but I think the other way round is more doable
subscription list is doable though right
also we can get the tags from GR and use them as words![]()
that is brilliant
i can give you a command line proccessor API where ur app can send commands to Particls
that will be great !
ok
awesome
well basically you can get the opml/subscription list from google reader and send it to particls as an 'important this opml file'
and u can get the tags/lables from GR and pass them on as commands to add them to Particls as well
i guess all u need is the user's GR un/pw
we can also give u a command to mark items as read by permalink - so if u can get read items from GR and pass them as read items too that would be great
saw that you can use URL auth - didnt check it yet
ok cool
I get my user ID via FireBug (best thing since sliced bread)![]()
note that for OPML import we should auto-exclude feeds we already have - so u dont need to do dupe checking
Same with tags/labels
Same with Mark items as read
nice. less work for me![]()
yeah we have gone to great lengths to handle duplicate checking inside the engine
an input adapter, for example, could spam us with the same item, but the user will only see it once
if the app works well - we can/will bundle it if u want us to
sure. no probl
a rails app just runs natively though yeah? no execution engine required
hey did u know there is a .NET ruby implementation
u could use it to make Ruby based .NET adapters
rails needs a ruby engine
as every ruby stuff
sorry I meant Ruby
what i am asking is whatever ur making - will it will run itself or will we need to install another runtime for it
urgh, dont like stuff that needs runtimes (including .net)
... so my stuff will be one small exe
Ruby makes an exception though![]()
ok great
do consider looking into Ruby.NET though
if it could be a proper adapter then it will be easier for us to deploy it and auto-update it etc
I dont have time to learn .NET, so check http://plas.fit.qut.edu.au/ruby.net/Download.aspx to see if you suits you. if yes, then I can make the ruby code
That's the Ruby.NET stuff isn't it?
it seems that it compiles Ruby code to .NET clr
yeah
thats what i am saying
but anyway - whatever is easy for u - dont want to get hung up on the technical stuff
there is a command line processor that u can access from the browser, from the shell or as an adapter raising a method
so its very flexible
the Ruby Compiler is a commandline proggie that executes .rb files. why it is called a compiler I dont know![]()
bit slow for my taste though
okies
oops. silly me - it can create an .exe too
which need 1.2mb of DLL files![]()
can it create a .net DLL also?
"
Statically compile a Ruby source file into a .NET library file, eg test.dll"
cool
well chances are u can create an adapter somehow
this does not need to be an adapter though
works just as well as a seperate application sending commands to p
just a little less integrated
yeah. wish you had used C/C++ for Particls![]()
than we didnt saw 50mb mem usage at startup
))
lol first u want ruby now u want C
C# is the same as C but better
everything that's great with C and Java combined and improved
not for me
... I am more machine related.
haha ok then
drat. I installed .NET 3 to see an application and now Particls doesnt start anymore![]()
uninstalled and saw that I only have an older install as I dont know where the update saved the download file. so here we go, downloading again the install
damn .NET
also I am unable to make Peebles work - now is again in Pause mode![]()
were you able to get pebbles out of pause mode
its odd that Particls didnt work with .net 3 as .net 3 should be backwards compatible
yes. I can get it out of Pause mode but it does not send any data
I think .NET 3 install did something wrong - I've lost the icon on the particls.exe as well
maybe unistall particls - reboot - reinstall
that fixes most windows problems
this is what I did. now I have 0.9.1457 working
excellent
Is there a way to pause a feed? I am running the Web 2.0 Expo edition and there a bunch of great feeds but I need updates on my custom feeds as a priority. Can we pause some feeds that I might come back to later?
hi
you could lower the source - but it may mean that you could loose some articls
or the better thing to do might be to increase the priority of your custom feeds
I don't think you can start/stop/pause individual feeds at the moment, but if you see a headline you are interested in, you can grab and pull it off of the ticker and save it for later.![]()
u r right adam you can not pause a feed at teh moment
Yeah, that would be good though. <div>I've always said that it needs really really good volume control. You get me by volume?</div>
you can rate your sources up and down and your keywords (in the advacned tab)
Woah. html spilliage
I thought you must have copied that and pasted tat in
GTG - TTYL
Being able to micro-manage all of the feeds individually like you can the feeds as a whole would be a nice feature. Pause, Stop, Start individual feeds, or have some feeds scroll quicker or slower than others.
Hi Adam, pausing feeds is a nifty idea - will put it on the wish list for you
Most of the speed features can be handled through the feed ticker advance options along with other customization options.
But it is a little to geeky for non-geeks who are too afraid to test the settings.
I suggest adding some nice non-geek buttons for option settings.
That's a good idea - what are the key features do you think and where is an easier place to put them up-front
By the way, you really need to like ... auto-respond when people say they want C or Ruby:
C++ is a first-class .Net language, you've always been able to write .Net apps in C++ (yes, C++, not C, but hey, the API is object oriented, so that's that).
Ruby has several "bridge" projects and there's even a Ruby Compiler for .Net available from Gardens Point:
Hey good point Jaykul! Can you tell TBD in the Plugins/adapters/extensions topic
should add it to the developers Wiki also
particls.pbwiki.com
Sending ...
