  • Prism Bookmarklet Experiment

So, one of the first things that came to my mind when I started playing with Webrunner was to make a bookmarklet to generate webapp bundles from the page you were on.  This was just a proof of concept and for my own use really.  Since Prism was announced (new version/name of Webrunner), it was also clear that making webapps would be done via Firefox itself.  So, to some extent a bookmarklet may not have much purpose unless its being used for Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera or other web browsers besides Firefox.  Some people may even prefer a bookmarklet.  I dont know.  Regardless, one exists and it is located here:

    http://prismspectrum.com/bookmarklet/

I plan to deal with some issues so that it can be used by people beyond myself, but for sake of experimenting... I figured that I would share out the link and let people try it.

Any troubles or feedback would be great as I think about extending this with more advanced features in parallel with Prism development.  You can chat here or email me at sulleleven -at- gmail.

    Thanks,

    Sull

  • ActiveX Control?

Any plugin that Firefox has installed should also work for Prism.  I have yet to try Prism on Windows but the way plugins are found and used are the same.  Take a look at this page - http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Gecko_Plugin_API_Reference:Plug-in_Basics#How_Gecko_Finds_Plug-ins

  • Have there been any Web Apps that have extra features on Prism in a bundle?

Prior to the rename and official Mozilla Labs Project announcement, Prism was Webrunner and was not widely known about and is a new project that I believe began in the spring.

Beyond changing the chrome/HostUI via css stylesheets and javascript as outlined on the prism wiki, which is the limitation right now, support for Prism extensions will probably be added and this can tap into deeper customizations like you see with Firefox.

I created the bookmarklet here - http://prismspectrum.com/bookmarklet/  and this could be extended to be used in different ways... I will be adding support for custom sidebar content soon.  Also plan ti provide a version that binds to a specific site so a site owner could offer their visitors a way to make a prism app of their site along with pre-defined configuration and styles.

  • Developer Feedback

thought it would be interesting to setup a Mozilla Prism Group here on Tangler and wrap it as a Prism app, which I just did by embedding this topic on a page at my server.  Unfortunately, I cannot login to it from Prism since it handles external domain by launching Firefox.... So I cannot get cookie/session setup within Prism unless I embed the tangler.com group instead, which I will try now.

  • Trusting your desktop to the web: Safety in Air, Silverlight and Prism

Here is a pretty good article outlining the security issues involved with the primary desktop/web hybrid platforms:

  • Prism and Leopard

Hey Alex.  There is an issue with XULRunner (The runtime engine for Prism, Firefox etc.)  See this bug report: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=402317

  • Prism + Tangler

Tangler seems to be extra snappy when running inside Mozilla Prism.  Still working through an SSL certificate problem which prevents users from logging in, but you can still browse around.
