Australian Class
A few weekends ago, my GF and I got invited to a BBQ at our next door neighbours.
Our neighbours are expats from the UK (awesome people), and relatives of theirs were visiting from the U.K.
To cut a long story short, my GF and I got talking to one of the relatives, who dropped the compulsory ignorant tourist line:
"Australians are all descended from Convicts"
I said... "I'm not..... but I really wish I was... especially if it was some notorious criminal, maybe a bank robber, highway-man or even a serial killer"
The humor was completely wasted on her, and she preceded to tell us of her genealogy which made her to be related to some English poet or some other near-noble breeding stock.
After her long winded, (and i'm assuming intention to impress us ignorant colonials) speech, I put it simply that no-one in Australia really cares about prestigious heritage, when Australia was founded, everyone was equally hard done by... peoples history was effectively erased all ties with former lives were so far away as they didn't count for anything... it was a fresh start for all.
needless to say... she didn't think much of my explination of the Australian class-less society!... I think she was more disappointed because I didn't swoon over the fact she was related to some buck-toothed nancy boy who probably married his cousin.
I really hate it when someone tries to impress you with who they happen to be related to, I mean who gives a shit??
If you want to impress me, tell me something YOU have done...
.. am I supposed to be impressed by something you have done nothing of your own to achieve?
