OK, first post, first rant!

as a way to avoid doing my damned 10000 word dissertation of crappness im here, ranting on some strangely familiar but strangly different...thing... called tangler. Anyway, i cant stand it how much I have to jusp through hoops just to get a good grade on my dissertation. Its horrible. No matter how good my argument is it is still going to be marked by some narrow minded, up-themselves lefty who thinks marx, Lennin and Trotsky are the Trinity of some new socialist religion. I DONT CARE WHAT YOU THINK THIS IS WHAT I THINK AND ITS OK! Just because you dont agree with my conclusions dosn't mean my argument sucks and it dosnt mean i've wasted £10k+ and 3years of my life at this God forsaken University of crapness! RAHH

a bit of positivity really helps thru a dissertation karath! i just finished mine a couple of months back. i managed it through sleepless nights, too many ciggies, too much coffee, malfunctioning brain and malfunctioning citation software....but it got done...eventually...so don't lose hope....

I just got back from uni with my thesis.... Haven't read the comments yet, which look like a dissertation in themselves....

Karath, the best advice I can give you is to give it your full attention and do it to the best of your ability.

I don't know how it's done there, but over here (Sydney) I can make any argument I want, and if I can back it up, I get the grade. As long as my work is 'bullet proof' all's good

 The Dissertation is loosly titled 'Where are/have the Neo-conservatives taken America?' And deals mostly with the foreign policy aspects. For example, the increased strain with the EU/UN, as well as the realities of actions without the 'taint' of  idealist theory. Ultimatly it should be concluding that the US in in a perpetual trajectory of Empire, and one that needs to be acknowledged by the US and the rest of the world. 

Oh, as my rant so absolutly failed to fully explain. I can basicly choose whatever I want as long as it is in the remit of the degree, International Relations. And what is meant to happen is as you say it, as long as you have a good argument you get a good grade. But you are given a dissertation tutor who marks your work, and if a) you dont get on, b) they dont agree with your politics c) any other social reason for a lower opinion of you - then you are at a disadvantage, because they are the one who marks the work. Its a daft system, and even though there are numerous check and balances in a close knit department as mine is, no-one will be willing to go against another tutor unless there are some glareing issues with the marking...

I had a supervisor, but the finished work itself was marked by two others who were not connected to me in anyway, but who specialised in my topic...

No complaints there 

i have never had that kinda thing before...i know for a fact that a dissertation is to be marked by a panel of ppl. noway is your supervisor in a position to grade you. Is this an arts subject thing that i am missing out on? I come from a sceicne and engineering background so everything is either black or white if u know what i mean.

PhD student regrets choosing Buffy The Vampire Slayer as thesis topic

chosen area of inquiry.

Her still incomplete thesis, entitled The

Attending a conference on Buffy successfully destroyed her
remaining faith in academia. "It was all goths, repressed gays and
punnind session titles. After Fangs for the Mammaries, how
could I go on?" And her love for what was once her favourite TV is
set to be the next victim. "I was naïve enough to think that I
could never get sick of Buffy," she says. "Boy, was I
wrong about that."

Chastened by her experience, Wasserman hopes her mistake can serve as
a lesson to others.

I reckon completing a dissertation must be the ultimate test in discipline.  You all deserve a huge pat on the back.

I will accept your pat when I finish my Phd..... don't deserve it for the one I did.... it was a practice in ultimate non-discipline!

I have 2 weeks, and ive got 7800 words down + notes. but to be honest its not that great at the moment, the argument is there but VERY badly expressed... I just hope i have enough time to sort it out. Plus do 2 other 3500 essays. 

Whoa..... that's a heavy load.... but don't worry, it's doable

Break them up and set yourself daily goals. 

1) wake up [tough on its own]

2) Drink a remarcable amount of high caffeine 'Energy Drink [damn i wish I liked coffee]

3) boot up the computer

4) Stare and delete all teh crap that was typed the night before.

5) And start again, re-typeing every other word on account of the uncontrolable shakes that now overcome the fingers. 

Sounds fairly familiar....

There is a huge benifit to coffee... You're teeth dont actually sizzle and degrade after every mouthful... heh

start loving coffee...period. those energy drinks are just gross...

Yeah.... and worse for you than coffee me thinks....

Then again, with the amt of coffee I drank during the writing times..... probably no difference 

How much have you got left to do?  With what I've got left of my dissertation + two essays I have a total of 10,000 still to do - by the 23rd.  10,000 words, 9 days.  *takes a deep breath*

Abt 1000 a day? No worries! You'll get that done in no time

Remember - divide and conquer!

Yeah, I've done 8000 in 5 days before so I know I can do it

Those word counts are makin me hyperventilate. Phew!

Word counts never meant anything to me till I had to write the darned thesis.... before that, I always had more to say than the space afforded.

After writing the thesis, I was all worded out - I felt like I couldn't even string a coherent sentence together!

I still write too much. I am starting to learn that to write an article you have to pull back all arguments as there is never enough room to say everything!
